well I was talking about us

and obviously if you are talking about vertical jump for a ruckman that might be an exception

morton watts toumpas and trengove all tested through the roof for these things didn't they?

I'm just saying perhaps these athletic yardsticks obscure the judgment over the more important aspects - guts, brains and skills, that's how they picked players up ntil qbout 10 years ago when every aspect of the game became obsessive with statistics and sports science

Toumpas never got tested and Watts definitely wasn't in the mighty end. His problem was his endurance..

It hasn't harmed Brad Hills chances if you look at it the other way also.

Bit late but Billy backed up another solid performance from his 26 disposal and 2 goals with a 22 disposal game last weekend.

Billy is starting to prove he can become a ball winner at senior level with his high endurance level enable him to run all day.

He's extremely impressive, there is no longer any doubt in my mind that we will use a second rounder if we have to

I don't think we will have to use a second rounder to get Billy. A club, other than St.Kilda, would have to agree to use their first round pick on Billy in the F/S bidding for us to have to use our second rounder. This would be extremely unlikely I would have thought.

Port could. Their recruiting manager has been watching Billy since he was 12.

So what would that be? About pick 14-16? If they rated him that highly we'd have to take him around the 20 mark.

This kid is exactly what we need right now. What an absolute gift from the footy gods.

Third round would be an absolute steal, so all depends on whether a team would plunge their first round pick on him.

Just wait until we get Jake Lovett on our list

Have to admit i've not seen him play but if he made AA he must be alright.

Any chance he could become our rebounding defender in the mould of hanley/birchall?

Just did some googling and found this

Melbourne will be salivating over eligible father-son selection, Jake Lovett, who is the son of former club champion Brett. Although a different type of player to his father, Jake is a high-possession winning on-baller, with damaging disposal and a tendency to be aggressive. The only downside is that he the Dees will have to wait another year, as he is not eligible until 2015.

am assuming this is him with JV?

Looks huge already. Some good signs for the future of our youth, especially if we take Petracca this year.

Will the Saints take him before us though? I'm assuming we'll be trying to scope out their draft intentions before giving up picks 2 & 3.

Billy being so lightly framed is not a top 20 pick, which means it's highly unlikely any club will bid on him before our 2nd rounder. We'll get him with our 3rd rounder.

The AFL won't be tampering with the f/s rule this year ~ No change to father-son bidding system this year

I expect Billy to cost us our second round pick although some optimists think he will cost a third rounder. That latter possibility is highly unlikely.

Sheeeit lightly framed outside type ...... Will we never learn??

Iv'e said it before... Third rounder, no more! "and the devil take the hindmost"!!

I bet Freo are regretting taking the skinny Stephen Hill inside the top 20.

It isn't easy to get a high running capacity, speed and good skills in the same package. Plus each of those attributes are sorely lacking in our side.

Or Hawthorn with Brad Hill..

Just a darn pitty

Yeah well, given our abysmal recruiting record, if we draft the kid with a second rounder and he turns out ah "Less than favourable" then watch out for a mega blood letting session on this forum!

Willing to take the chance are we???

And if we do and if the ghosts that are Cale Morton resurface, i'll say it again "The Devil take the hindmost"!

Lead on Mc Duff!

You've said it before and been pulled apart about it before. How many times will it take?

Let's try a few more, this time from the last couple of drafts. Because apparently Hill, Pendlebury, Gibbs et al just isn't convincing.

Josh Kelly.184cm 74kg

James Aish 184cm 74kg

Jack Billings 185cm 76kg

Lachie Whitfield 187cm 75kg

Troy Menzel 187cm 78kg

Will Hoskin-Elliot 186cm 75kg

Luke Dahlhaus 189cm 76kg

Nobody is saying that every kid under 80kg is going to magically be a star, but it is completely NOT a basis for writing a player off.

I hate myself for getting sucked into this, but the case is just so open-and-shut that I can't let go of the hope that even Picket Fence will get his addled mind around it on day.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
