in my opinion, it's a misnomer that we have an abundance of crumbing forwards

- Wona is, imo, our one and only genuine small forward. However, the club has played 2 'small forwards' the whole season (Bennel ussually the other) bc of the importance of applying defensive pressure in the forward line. I think Alwyn Davey is a very different type of small forward than Wona. Alwyn is much much quicker while wona relies more on his natural reading of the play. I think they'd compliment each other well. I also think its worth noting that many on this site don't rate Wona that highly as a great small forward, and while I personally think wona is good, I don't think he's ever going to be one of the highest quality small forwards in the afl.

- Bennel has been tried as a small forward, but the club definitely still has hopes for him as a half back or winger (as confirmed by Cameron Schwab on his most recent stream conversation, and Dean Bailey in a radio interview mid-year). When he plays forward he does apply defensive pressure, but i don't think he's a genuine crumber and I think with his huge upside and good skills, he could be a better half back flanker in the future. I think is Alwyn came to the cub, he and Wona would become the small forwards and Bennel would be released to wing/half back.

- Maric I personally don't rate. Being real, he's a good chance of being delisted at the end of the next year if he doesn't have a break out season. Whilst he may have come to the club as a crumber, he certainly hasn't played that way at AFL or VFL level in 2010, playing more as a forward flanker who pushes up to the wing

- Jetta, like his brother Leroy, is a midfielder who likes to kick the odd goal. He's not a particularly good midfielder either, and I also think he's a big chance of being delisted next season unless he has a break out season

- other options up forward, like Bail, Tapscott, Pettard, Dunn etc are definitely not small forwards.

I think its also worth noting that in 2008, Alwyn was brilliant. 2009 he had a knee-reco and 2010 was his first season post- reconstruction. 2011 he should be back to normal (ala Malceski took a year to get back to best form)

Summery: Bailey recognises the importance of the small crumbing forward, as evidenced by the fact he's played 2 of them for most of the season even when Bennel and Wona weren't in great form and also by the fact that he's drafted so many in recent times. Our only 2 genuine options atm are Wona and Bennel, and the club has suggested they have bigger plans for Bennel, and Wona is a completely different type of small forward than Alwyn would be.

Would I chase Alwyn hard and throw buckets of cash at him? No. Would I facilitate a trade if he requested Melbourne. Definitely

Had his chance to come over before his last contract. With Bennell, Aussie, Jetta, Maric he is not required and would struggle to get in our best 22. Injury prone and inconsistent.

I would like to see Jetta's game to the next level. I have high hope's for him... Half-forward or Wing.

We should only trade for a mature midfielder (Mundy) or big bodied forward. I would pass on a ruckman this year. Develop our own and if need experience in a couple of years trade for a gun ruck then.

As said, we have players such as Bennell, Jetta, Wonna, Maric, Bail as well as Tapscott to come in and play the half forward role we require. Depending on circumstance all of these guys deserve more of an opportunity in 2011 to see who will come forward & stake a claim to a permanent spot.

Don't think we gain a lot by bringing Davey into that mix. He is ok without being anything spectacular & the others above deserve to show if they can be better than just ok.

You have to ask how much Alwyn has impacted this year ( recovering or otherwise ) ? Essendon have been rubbish this year and still Davey couldn't stand out. We have muchmore limited scope with picks and leverage now so why waste any effort on family repatriation ? Let them catch up over dinner not the lockers !!!

I have a problem with recruiting brothers of good players.

My memory is still haunted by the day when Damian Gaspar, Darren's challenged brother, stubbed his toe kicking out after a point.

Firstly, I was only thinking about our small forwards this morning and wondering how much less potent they are than Carlton's equivalent who are all dangerous around goals and capable of kicking a bag on a weekly basis. I don't think ours were anywhere near as dangerous in 2010 (injury and fitness being a factor) and it's an area that we need strengthening.

That said, I'm not sure that Alwyn Davey is the answer.

Secondly, I'm not sure that the information given at times on SEN (especially from certain callers) is all that reliable.

I doubt very much whether the club is looking at recruiting average players we don't need just because their brother plays for us.

With regard to Jetta and Maric. Jetta has shown enough that he could well still play a role and Maric has had 1 injury free year. Both have more upside than Alwyn Davey.

some people don't understand the concept of depth on a list and challenging for spots.

Davey had a bad year with injury and also playing under Knights. His pace and skill was evident in 2008 when deployed in the right position.

Wouldn't be a bad thing if we got him, and if he's asked to leave, the first club he'd want to be at would be us considering Aaron is held in such high regard around the place. He would flourish playing under a teacher like Bailey- not a coach that had a shocking build up to AFL coaching.

I thoroughly agree- we have had two previous cracks at him- both unsuccessful. Best to stay well away IMO..
