I think so. We weren't really desperate to get rid of either player. They chose to leave after hearing offers from Carlton. Hence I think they were poached.

We offered CJ one year at the latest possible time in 2008.

Last year we just about halved McLean's contract payment and allegedly for two years. And we didn't counteroffer Carlton's higher bid.

There a message there. We were not desperate to get rid of them but we sure as hell werent desperate to keep them.

At the beginning of this year people were talking about how strong our defence is with Frawley and Warnock as our two reliable KPD's. However I agree that others seem to have superseded him. If he's ever going to have any trade value it will be this year.

If you are going to be a top flight side you need to make hard decisions on your list. I think you summed up the Warnock position fairly.

If and that is a big if, we traded Warnock to carlton for Hampson or Jacobs, then I would delist PJ.

I'd be thinking delisting PJ anyway. But it would be a certainty under that scenario.

Carlton have a Thornton, I don't think there is much between Warnock and Thornton. I feel sorry for both they where fullbacks in teams that got smashed every week and now the teams are starting to win find themselves in the VFL

In a side that still has problems up back, Thornton cant get a game. Warnock can play body on body. He might be a target for the Blues.

"Might" is exactly the right term. He will not be the blues number 1 trading target.

The big fish for them and the Hawks will be Tarrant, Both clubs will try to lure him back home. I would assume both clubs do have Warnock in the back of their minds as a possible back up plan if they cannot secure Taz.

But in my opinion thats about all Warnock will be to those teams.... a back up plan.

So, I take it, if we don't trade in a ruckman you'd keep PJ..?

Yes for one more year, as we need a backup to Jamar and Spencer and Gawn haven't proved themselves yet.

Our draft picks at the moment are 12,32,49,66,83,100

and with about 21 core players ranked either Outstanding, Excellent or Very Good - Bruce, Green, Jamar, Moloney, Rivers, Davey, Sylvia, Frawley, Garland, Bartram, Petterd, Grimes, Scully, Trengove, Bennell, Gysberts, Jurrah, McKenzie, Morton, Watts, Wonaemirri, Bail

Blease and Tapscott haven't played AFL yet.

Everyone else on our list will be reviewed in the end of season FD reviews. My opinion is the club will be looking to strengthen their position again at the draft.

Our list has gotten younger from the start of the season where 41.2% of our list had played 4-5 years of footy or less, to now 69% of our list being at 4-5 years of footy or less with the McDonald, Miller and Bell retirements

So if we did trade Warnock, it would be for Carlton's first or second pick, or perhaps a backup ruckman

I think Jones unfrotunately will be traded to the GC for a pick. PJ will be delisted to move Spencer up onto Senior list- the club won't be delisting him and they'll be throwing him into the deep end, because that's the way to fast-track tall spuds- get AFL games into them. People might be suprised, but don't be when Fitzpatrick plays a few games next year. Gawn will hopefully touch wood play a full season at Casey.

if warnock is to go to carlton , take their pick. do the saints need a fullback , give us mcevoy

Posted

Honestly if we could work out some sort of deal that nets us Hampson and Walker for Warnock and a pick? Id be really happy with that.

Walker is not a spud, he is an incredible athlete, just had alot of unfortunate injuries.

He's an incredible athlete who's also a terrible field kick, which we don't need. Happy to have Hampson though

Thats a great summation, totally agree with your general thinking.

And I hope we do strengthen our drafting position. Not hoping to be Rid of Jones. But if it happens I'll live with it, just as happy if he stays with us.

But We Must continue to build the list, from both ends of the age spectrum,,, 18 yr olds + 25 - 26 Yr old... who???

So that would mean Carlton would have pick 37 as their second round pick??

I couldn't imagine Carlton would give up their 1st rounder, but would we be happy to take pick 37 for Warnock? I'd like us to get a pick in the 25-29 region. After all, he's had two top 10 finishes in the last 3 b & f's, which has to count for something...

All the Carlton people I know want Walker gone.

I'm not sure if Walker could bring anything to us. I'm all for players improving in a different environment and under a different coach, and Bailey seems more of a teacher than Ratten does.

Prefer pick for Warnock, even if it is Carlton's second round pick (pick 37.) but i think they'd be willing to give up their first round pick (pick 19) because they need a defender

Considering their first pick is pick 19, that would be a fair price to pay for a FB.

However Warnock is a straight out shut down player who doesn't provide drive out of the backline. They've already got Jamison. you really can't have 2.

Hawks pick 20. I would think they would be sniffing out a ruckman first.

My pick is the Saints especially if they don't win it this year. Pick 24 or 25 for a FB. Fair IMO.

Ah yes. Tarrant.

GC have a sh*t load of 1st round picks. Some/lots? will be used for trades, which can be on-traded. Who knows what picks will be available for trades.

Gonna be a complicated trade period me thinks.

I would think Warnock would like to be traded to Carlscum to play with his brother. He had limited opportunity at the Dee's.

Is he out of contract? Could Carlscum possibly get him free? I hope not.

A suitable trade for both clubs would be Warnock for Jacobs. I would be happy with that!

Hawthorn I think would be interested also.

Warnock and our 3rd round pick for Lisle and Muston???

I guess its likely a number of picks will change hands during trade week anyway. So we dont know for sure who will have those picks between 25-30..

I agree that Carlton don't really need him, but then again they didn't really need McLean either.. B) Ratts obviously has a soft spot for us, so you never know...

Hawthorn are probably the only team that could do with a player that has his attributes as they are clearly undersized..

Oh yeah i forgot about GC. I think we'd probably get a better deal trading with another club tho. I mean, if Adelaide could only get a second rounder for Bock then we wont get anywhere near that for Warnock...

I don't think mono was talking about the GC out-of-contract player trading

I think he was saying that they have so many draft picks for draftees that they will be prepared to trade some of those directly for some experienced contracted players from other clubs. They already have a heap of last year 17YO's and they don't want a team of too many last year 17 YO's & this year 18 YO's. hence they might do a lot of direct horse trading to get a better mix of experience/youth.

Oh yeah of course, Warnock's still under contract isn't he...

A pick between 20-30 would be ideal, and GC have pick 26 I believe.

I'd definately take GC's pick 26 for Warnock if it was offered...

I thought mono was saying that the final draft picks could be quite different from where they stand now because GC17 have picks 1,2,3.5,7,9,11,13,15,26,43 and they could trade any number of these before the draft to get a better mix of experience (separate from the out-of-contract player rules)

Forget Warnock for a moment, this could open up all sorts of possibilities and complexities

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
