Luke Ball went to Xavier and always puts his head over the ball. But I know where Jmac is coming from. They have different junior programs that don't always expose them to the right coaching.

Are you saying they may have inconsistent programs that may or may not expose them to the right coaching ? (ie. the quality of coaching available may vary year to year) Or are you referring to the quality coaching on offer from school to school ?

Never seen such much drivel on Demonland. "Softness" what a load of old cobblers.

From where I sit no one who gets to be No.1 draft pick is soft.

For that matter I doubt there is anyone who plays AFl that is soft.

Some players are in and under types and others use their skill and finese.

Go to a AFL / VFL game and stand on the fence, see, hear, and feel the physical nature of the game close up.

Then tell me Watts or any one else is "SOFT".

I do not believe it.

Watts might be many things but SOFT! NO

I agree where Watts is concerned being a Brighton Grammar boy. The school is known for it's softness. Playing them in Amo's it's well known they are soft. But I think he should be judged after 3 or 4 preseasons with more bulk. It is taking time for him to adjust which is why i think he should be playing at Casey. He has the right tools to become a good player, he just needs to cope with pressure better which comes with experience.

Not sure about strauss. Has had injuries but may miss out on a spot in Casey's finals team (if its still the 12-10 rule! but again another preseason and we will know more!

They will be B grade next year! When we play them and have beaten them the last 4 or 5 times we always know they don't like hard tough footy, maybe thats why we are in the top 2!

regardless of where the boy's studied. They will not be as physical as a seasoned AFL player, how many of the 75 odd draftee's that come into the game each season and show up a Moloney or Pavlich week in week out?

Give these boys a few seasons before you start calling them soft.

INteresting that two of our 'private school' recruits lack intensity - Strauss and Watts. Its a pet theory of mine.... Particularly when compared to a Dustin Martin type who plays as if his life depends on it (It probably does)

I know it was an old post, but I thought it was worth mentioning...

I have heard that one of the reasons Tappy's kick hasn't come back to look like it did in that video was some residual confidence issues related to his hip surgery. No reason to think it's permanent, but from what I hear he's had to adapt a bit.

This got me to thinking. We will either have the next Chappy on our hands, like all the glass half full people think. Or we might have another Moloney on our hands. Now Moloney's a very good player, but his looong looooooong kick hasn't often been used to the effect it should. Hopefully Tappy can find that prediction and vision that Davey has (or part of it).... if he does, he'd be the best kick in HISTORY!

I really hope, against hope, that Tappy gets a Grimes-like round 22 start. Blease too, though I'm not sure he has the confidence in his leg yet. Mostly I want to see Tappy get out there and show what kind of player he is. He seems to love the hard stuff, and I reckon he'd like to be in a side with Trengove, even if it is a dead rubber. Probably won't happen... But whatever.

I reckon that the APS footy comp is nowhere near as physical as some of the suburban leagues. That might mean some of the APS boys take a little while longer to adujst to the physicality of AFL. Its only food for thought....

Wow, this thread is entertaining reading. Love the old debate about private v public schools.

FWIW, i went to a private school and a state school, playing 1sts footy at both and also went through the TAC cup program. (And i was clearly not good enough at the highest junior level... )

I have played with many tough guys who are private school boys, and equally many who were not. The school they went to had absolutely no bearing on their appetite for the contest. Sorry to disappoint lads but the school debate is a dead one.
