Chelly's 2010 Phantom National Draft

Chelly

Recommended Posts

I made a start on this last night and I'm working very slowly and methodically through the players available. Here's my first draft:

1. Gold Coast - David Swallow (Subiaco, WA)

I'll build on this as the year unfolds.

Just imagine the excitement in the Hugh Trumble Room as they start the countdown from 10 to 1 with our pick somwhere in the 20s! :o

We're 'short' one defender over 195cm. We have some great guys down there but no truly tall guy, and Warnock at FB is a bit older than the others and most likely will retire after his first or second premiership (likely as well as Rivers), while Frawls and Judy go on to a few more.

So, draft priorities for next few years are -

+1 absolute first rate >195cm defender.

And then it's a matter of replacing any of the current list who don't quite make it, and to just keep on turning over the speculative picks to see if we can find a bonus.

Totally agree. I get bagged by posters that say our defence is fine and maybe the best in the league. It is fine at the moment, but I bet if Warnock/Rivers get injured everyone will be screaming that we don't have sufficient KP depth to cover these positions. CC said that Garland is likely to be used as forward. I would love a Nathan Bock, Ben Rutten type down back.

The problem is that GC17 and GWS will pick the eyes out of KP prospects over the next 2 years. We may have already missed the boat. If the recruiters are switched on we may find someone decent. Bock was a rookie selection afterall.

2. Jack Darling

Darling, Swallow and Matera will be off to the Gold Coast. What a pity. The West Coasters love Darling.

Can someone please tell me why Ah Chee didn't go in this years draft? He was eligible right? I thought he was good enough and some reports I had read suggested he'd go late...

This was his second draft that he unfortunately missed out on. He was eligible. Don't know why he wasn't picked up but would be well worth it as a rookie pick...I was saying that last year as well that I think it would be worth the punt.

I'll do this for Redleg...

363 days to go...

melbourne's wish list would include a crumbing forward, a full foward, and a running defender

With Jurrah as full forward/crumbing forward. Aussie, Jetta and Maric as crumbing forwards. And Bennell, Grimes, Blease or Strauss as running defenders. MFC arn't looking to bad in these areas.

Perminate full forward, is the area i see a hole in the list. Hoping Morton or Watts, can claim this spot in the best 22. Maybe even Fitspatrick, you never know?

I suspect that with the exception of a small corner of SE Queensland, next year's draft selection meeting isn't going to rate it's socks off and that Melbourne's involvement will be minimal. GC17 has already taken 12 of the best players from the 2010 pool and has a suitcase load of first round picks to play with. There will no doubt be a few trades done of these early picks but, other than those, the pickings will generally be slim. Hopefully, we might be able to fill part of the void with a couple of rookie promotions but otherwise, the draft circus is over for a few seasons and tanking will be no more than a distant memory.

Agree. It will look silly with 10 players up on stage and 6 or 7 players wearing the Gold Coast jumper...

Next years trade week will be huge with GC17 coming in with a fair bit of cash and picks to trade.

We are going to in a good position to land a big fish. Our rise up the ladder next year will mean that more players will be keen to join us. We are only just paying the minimal salary cap at the moment, so will be able to rival GC17 in wages for a player. Will have some good rookies to promote and will be more willing to give up our higher draft picks especially with so many youngsters already competing for game time. And we are based in Victoria, which is much more appealing to a lot of players.

Frawley is an inch too short.

Oh, just our luck hey...

It's amazing how big an inch can get...

3 more years as he turned 15 in April, therefore 2012 Draft.

You sure? That means we won't get him in the years when the draft is pillaged by either GC17 or GWS as I was hoping... Now we'll be forced to use a much higher pick on him.

The timing has worked incredibly well for the doggies in this respect... assuming Libba & Wallis are the goods.

Is it possible for Viney to be picked up at 17 in 2011 ? When GWS pillage the draft. Edited by High Tower

    DERAILMENT by KC from Casey

It wasn’t quite a trainwreck although at times, it sure looked like one, so I’ll settle for “derailment”.  The trip to Brighton Homes Arena in Springfield outside the back of Brisbane might not exactly be the same place where Homer Simpson’s family resides but, if you listened closely to the utterances of the Casey Demons fans both at the ground or watching via livestream, you could hear lots of groaning and plenty of expressions of “D'oh!” reverberating in the background, particular

TEN YEARS AFTER by Whispering Jack

Things have changed in the more than ten years since the West Coast Eagles decimated Melbourne by 93 points on the MCG early in the 2014 season. The two sides had not met at the home of football in the interim until yesterday when Melbourne won by a comfortable 54 points to remain in contention for this year’s finals series. Back in those days, the Demons were in the midst of their Great Depression but they have since tasted premiership glory and experienced a long enough period among

GAMEDAY: Rd 17 vs West Coast

It’s game day and the Demons return to Melbourne to play the Eagles at the MCG for the first time in over a decade. A win keeps the Dees finals hopes alive whereas a loss will almost certainly slam the finals window shut.

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
