22. Brent Moloney [182 cm 88 kg 28.01.84 - 69 games (8 in 2008) 16 goals (2 in 2008)] - Moloney's injury-plagued career must surely be at the crossroads as the club and he negotiate his new contract.

Since his excellent debut season at Melbourne in 2005 after being traded by Geelong as part of the deal which snared premiership hero Brad Ottens, Moloney has had one ailment after another with groin, quadriceps and shoulder injuries restricting him to just 25 of a possible 67 games in three seasons. When fit, he's a hard at it, aggressive midfielder but the question now is whether he will ever be able to play out a full season again?

Hasn't reached the heights we had hoped, for whatever reason. Loves the club and would love a sustained run at it but the question marks remain????? Attempts to bomb it long became predictable... Body size and experience were attributes we needed on the ground but now his time may have passed. I would need to be sure he was capable of a full pre-season to regain enthusuasm for No. 22

I still love Moloney, but I've come to realise that he doesn't have what it takes anymore. With his fitness issues and his predictable long bombs, I can't see him lasting much longer. Which is unfortunate because I do like him a lot.

Only 25 tho'. If he does retire, hire him as mid-field coach and sack Williams. (Sack Williams anyway - useless.)

Probably a fair assessment. I did think though, that he was trying to be more considered in his ball use in the games prior to his (latest) season-ending injury.

Unfortunately people here rate players who turn the ball over in the middle of the ground by handpassing and chipping backwards and sideways ahead of those who occasionally turn the ball over trying to create good opportunities for forwards in the forward line.

Interesting to hear the club is in the process of putting pen to paper in a new deal for Brent. I have question marks on him.

IMO he needs to get fit - injury free - and step up next season from his first game back.

Keep him......his last injury was a collision injury which is just bad luck.

Who knows, doing his shoulder and having a break from footy may help him get over his op for good.

I'm tipping a big year for him in 2009........he was just hitting his straps before doing his shoulder......with Moloney and Rivers on the park we'll be much more competitive next year.

but could you please allude to why he is third rate?

from what i see: he has a good long kick and has toughness and grit about him

he is a good clubman...he took the younger boys for that boxing weekend

and on the field, he came third in the B & F in his first year at the club

and has had bad luck wiht injuries

when he was fit and firing this year, he was one of the best imo

i rate him highly when he hits his straps

You cant get rid of Moloney he adds grunt and hardness that will hopefully be followed by our younger midfielders. Even though he is injury prone with a good pre-season and solid fitness base his natural talent and hardness will stand us in good stead for next year.

ottens has flourished in his time at geelong, he has had a fantastic team around him though. how did you rate ottens at the time of the trade?

One thing about Moloney; people keep pointing out that he has missed so much football that its gotten to a stage where the game might have passed him by. While I can see their point, the fact is that whenever he's managed to string a few games together (at the start of last year and in his 8 games this year) his form has actually been pretty good. It seems like he's finally overcome his OP only to be hit with a shoulder injury. I'd give him a one year extension (or a two year extension with conditions attached). Unless theres more to it than we know and he's still got ongoing issues that wont allow him to get fit, I'd see this as a low-risk venture.

I'm gonna stand up for the guy here. This year before his injury he was one of our best players, and was a real leader out there. Something we lack, and something I hadnt seen alot from him before. He also showed he can be a goal kicking midfielder. I remember a game (possibly vs North?) where we were getting done, and he just took it from the centre bounce ran straight at the goals and put it through from 50. Twice in 3 mins. And they were the only goals we had scored from memory (or close to ). And after he nailed them he was jogging round trying to fire everyone up. Was a really good thing to see and raised my hopes for him more for the future.

Bad luck for him on the shoulder injury. Thank god it wasnt his groin breaking down again though! We certainly could have used him out there this year, if only to take some heat off Jones at times. I still believe he can be a good AFL player, but if he gets injured again next year then it's probably the end for him

I do rate him though. In my opinion, he's our second best mid behind Mclean and head of Jones. I know alot of people will disagree, but I just think if he gets the body right (yeah yeah...) he could surprise alot of people.

He has been injured so much that I don't ever think of him getting better. I just can't see it happening.

If he could come back it to form would mean so much for the midfield. I cant really see it happening.

It feels like he has already been de-listed and I instantly think of younger players to take his position.

I really hope he comes back with a good run. Would essentially be like gaining an extra mid.

I remember that game too. If we're thinking of the same game, it was against Geelong in '07. We lost by about 60 points, but those 3 minutes from Boomer were enough to convince me that we should continue with him, despite his injuries.

Sad thing about his injury this year was that he was playing his best game. That day against collingwood he had absolutely no regard for his body, in the end it got him down. A few other passengers in this side could learn alot from beamer.

Absolute crap, do you think they are asking Rivers to retire? Will be a fantastic player in the next few seasons!
