Changes for Richmond Game

Chris Johnson - owned the football and was clearly the best man on the ground. He showed great polish in his movement, in his decision making and in his disposal of the football and I would be astonished if he wasn't selected to play against Richmond next week.

Has to be given his chance. Has earned a call up in the last month more than anyone I can remember at the club. Bring him up and give him three weeks like Buckley was given, he will not disappoint and cement his spot. Can see him playing a Heath Shaw half back flank type role, a style I imagine he's playing down at Sandy at the moment.

Changes if I was Dean Bailey

In: C. Johnson, M. Whelan, S. Valenti, A. Davey, N. Carroll/S. Martin

Out: B. Moloney (inj), J. Rivers (inj), D. Bell, C. Bartram, J. Bode

Bartram has been poor for a while and needs a run for Sandy to find some form. Both Nate Carroll and Martin had good games at Sandy, either one could come in to replace the injured Jared Rivers. Valenti in to take Moloney's place in the middle.

You'd also consider Ben Holland if he's fit, but he couldn't get up for Sandy this week. I'd imagine Juice needs at least 1 game back with Sandy after his injury woes before he is considered.

Oops, forgot about Aaron Davey. Edited, Bode makes way for him.

WOuld personally like to see Bell in the midfield to replace Moloney. Big body, strong and agressive. Wont happen though.

Quite confident this week agianst the tiges

We are that bereft of a marking, goalkicking full forward that we should take the punt and play him if he's fit to play anyway. The Swans didn't mess around with Nic Malceski when he came back from his knee reco and he doesn't play in a fixed position at one end of the ground.

Wouldnt mind seeing Maric get a game, i know he is young and skinny but so is Cale and i dont see a problem with it being in the position we are in.

Martin won't play, he's still too raw I think.

Other changes are perfect, Bell is just in deplorable form and was bordering on embarrassing today. Bode was actually better than I thought he would be, but still not of the standard of a Whelan or Davey - the two players pushing to return. As much as I rate Carroll as a defender, I'm not sure we need him. Our two key backs in Warnock and Garland at the moment are performing really well. I say let them be.

And agree on CJ. How hard does he have to knock on the door to be selected!!

In's: Chris Johnson, Matthew Whelan, Shane Valenti

Outs: Daniel Bell, Brent Moloney(inj), Jared Rivers(inj)

It won't happen but Cameron Bruce should be dropped at least demoted from his role in the midfield. His lack of effective disposal costs the team too much. I'd be happy to see him play a purely defensive role for the rest of the season, he's shown he can play it quite well.

Bartram I thought played one of his better games today. Thought he was pretty good, gave a fair bit of run and his disposal was pretty good.

Will Garland play on Richo?

I can't see it happening, i think we'll let him develop. This week was the perfect opportunity with Davey out of the side.

He might sneak one later in the season, will have to wait and see. I believe the club is letting him concentrate on finishing school this year too?

A lot of changes there... I can't see Bailey making that many, but I agree with every one of them to be honest. Bell, Bartram both need time at Sandy, and I can't see Bode keeping Davey out of the team. I'd take a stab with Martin aswell... but, I just dunno if Richmond would have a match-up for him.

It would be dependant on Richmond's forward line for Martin/Carroll to come in. I just think it would be great for the supporters to see Warnock, Garland and Martin holding the three key positions down back.

And if we don't bring Carroll/Martin in we could be vulnerable down back without Bell in the side if Richmond went tall, as none of our other backs would have the ability to play tall. We'd have to throw someone like Bruce down back. Maybe this could save Bell from the chopping block for another week.

Bell doesn't really play tall though

I had the pleasure of speaking to Dean Bailey at the 150, and he said that C. Johnson is the most unlucky player on our list and will get his chances this year. Therefore, I would be extremely surprised if he doesn't play this week.

Eastie, Bruce has played many many many a game in defense let alone a defensive role in the midfield. HE used to play on Richo all of the time is the main one that springs to mind with many more. He has been our most versatile player for the last 10 years, Mid, For or back...

Bails said CJ is the most unlucky player on the list.... isn't Bails the one not picking him... didn't realise Bails was a lephrican

Heard Baily or someone at the club say he wouldnt play this year because they wanted him to concentrate on school.

Yze should be dropped for anyone. I was in the punt rd pocket in the last quater, he sould have kicked to the top of the square twice. Too selfish.

Whelan for Bell, Valenti for Moloney as straight swaps.

Having managed to raise is hand at the post match function means Aaron comes back into the side, at whose expense? Maybe Jace Bode - who had quite a few 1% yesterday so well done.

The replacement for Riv is a harder one, Carroll V Martin...experience V youth & versatility [you can also throw Martin forward and into the ruck].

Who makes way if CJ returns? A toss up between Bartam and Dunn perhaps...with overall team structure probably determining the outcome.

I'd like to see Bell put into the midfield and told to just hunt the ball..........give him a completely different role to what he has been playing..................either that or up forward.............i think he needs a change???? what's the worst that could happen?

If we don't beat the Tigers, i will be very upset. Not that we necessarily SHOULD, but i refuse to believe the effort that has pushed two top 4 teams the whole way cannot be replicated against a side who is consistent bottom four material.

Garland or Warnock will go to Richo. As far as I know Richmond has no real tall key forwards (maybe Polak but he might be dropped) so I don't think we need to replace Rivers with another tall.

Bell has to go now, and if there's a late withdrawal he shouldn't get back in. Bartram I thought was OK yesterday, he puts his head over the ball and attacks contests hard.

So does Bell but their decision making and disposal has not improved over the last few weeks and they both need to go back and work on those areas of their games.

Bell is much much much much worse than Bartram.

Valenti for Moloney

Frawley for Rivers

Johnson for Bell

Davey for Bode

I'd be hoping we put Dutchy in however, we need a strong tall forward presence, something we lacked yesterday.

Juice has been told to play 1-2 at Sandy, prob even reserves and then he will be back in.

Martin has been told he will prob get a few games later in the year, he is being developed as full back.

Dunn to continue a 'Ling' type role in the midfield.

Bartram is the worse decision maker in the side. constantly puts his teamates under the pump. His kicking has no penetration, often just sits it on teamates heads. His endevour was good on the weekend but he'd want to improve to retain his spot when Petterd and maybe Grimes are available.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
