Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Watts' output has lowered the last couple of weeks. Can you argue against that?

He started the year very well and received the plaudits he well and truly deserved, but will come under scrutiny if he doesn't return to that form. That's how it works.

I think Watts is playing very sore and understandably so.  He's had one game where he's been a genuine back up to Gawn, two games where he was our number one ruck for the majority and a number where he's spent considerable time there.  Opposition rucks have been understandably hurting him and it's catching up I think. We underestimate the collective physical damage an undersized ruck would suffer when asked to do it over a considerable period. It was interesting that McDonald rucked all the last quarter and not Watts because on face value we would most likely have been better the other way round.

Take that as you may, but he hasn't played the role that is his since round one and he's played pretty well over the course of the season.  He was poor on Sunday but potting him for it shows little insight.

You must have a handful of negatives about Tyson that you just slot in every week, regardless of his performance.

Tyson - solid days work

JoeBoy - Stayed at home

Mate if you're going to do your boring little 3 word analysis, at least be fair dinkum and watch the game

Finally some sense.

Has played most of this year as a significantly undersized ruckman, then expected to float forward, take the best defender and consistently kick a minimum of five goals.

He's an athlete, being placed, due to lack of personnel, in a position where he has little chance to use his athletic advantages. He's playing an incredibly valuable role for the team just getting out there and giving a contest in the middle. Anything else he manages to deliver before Gawn and Hogan return, should be considered a bonus.

Well maaate, if you're satisfied with Tyson's ' solid day's work' then you can probably excuse the fact that we lost AGAIN to a team that we were expected to beat.

I was there and didn't see Tyson do too much wrong. He had the same disposal stats as Jones (14k, 12h, 26 disposals @ 69.2%), yet he had two more goal assists, four more clearances (Jones had zero), two less clangers and two more contested possessions.

I didn't see you put "most overrated footballer" next to Jones.

It's what we do ... go overboard when we win and pot everybody when we lose, regardless of circumstance. The analysis is mind-numbingly repetitive.

Your total dislike of Tyson does cloud your view just a little though, joeboy.  Even you would have to admit that.

I'm prepared to give him credit when it's justified.. I just don't get the love for him that others feel

I don't get orgasmic over meaningless possessions and irrelevant touches, but rather I note the 1%ers like chasing , manning up, quick and precise ball movement.. all areas where I regularly note Tyson lacking

I don't think that joeboy can ever be accused of going overboard when we win. He may see some players in a different light to others (Tyson), but that makes him no different to 90% of the posters on here. Some think that O. Mac does his job, others think he's a hack. Some players will always polarise opinions.

Brendan McCartney is on record last season as describing Tyson as an elite ball winning midfielder. But what would he know.....

If any other Demonland whipping boy had the four clangers that Jones produced (two of them leading to opposition goals), there'd be calls to send them back to Casey never to play again.

Tyson has been good for the last couple of weeks.

It's called having credits.

Jones has played at an unbelievably high level in most facets of the game for a very very long time.

So of course people are going to cut him some slack for some uncharacteristic-turnovers.

All the 'whipping boy' talk is brought up by posters like you who cannot handle any sort of criticism of a player who consistently underperforms in certain areas of their game. Why do you believe Jones isn't ever a 'whipping boy' on this forum? Does anyone think about that? (Aside from his leadership from time-to-time).

Tyson showed more involved on the weekend. That's a positive. But his ball use when in space was again not at a high enough level. He doesn't punish the opposition. That is a negative.

A whipping boy is by definition someone who is criticised regardless of how they play, and blamed constantly for a negative team result.

I'm not interested in previous performances, credits or anything else that preceded the match when it comes to analysis of a game-day performance.

I have also never said Tyson is perfect.

I agree with this except the last bit.

He's been pox this year.  His inability to physically compete, even in 1v1 marking contests has been horrible.

Welcome back the jack of old.

As for Tyson ?

I doubt I've said a harsh word about him since he joined us, but for me he's a disappointing player.

He hasn't progressed since his first year (with us) in 2014 when he was 21.  He turns 24 in two weeks with 80 games under his belt and he's no better now and arguably impacts games less, because he hit the scoreboard in 2014 with 16 goals.  He's kicked one this year.

In the overall scheme of things I concede he's OK, but he's had zero growth as a player halfway through his 4th season at the club.

I know Trengove's papers are stamped, which is fair enough, but you'll have a hard time convincing me that he wouldn't offer the same output as Tyson.  If Trengove replaced Tyson over the next month I don't believe our chances of winning would be diminished one iota.

But plenty of players infuriate me.  Nathan Jones turnover kicks are hurting and intolerable from a senior player.

Tom McDonald is having a down year and I shudder when he's got the ball in his hands.

Wagner ?  I'm at a loss as to why he was rushed back after one game at Casey.  Clearly the coaches love him, but I'm yet to see this amazing talent before my eyes.

Lewis is a disappointment to me.  I was expecting a lethal left foot that never missed its mark.  He turns it over with the best of them.

No doubt some posters eyes are welling up with water as I criticise their darlings.  I'll cope.

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
