Physio here btw. I'll leave you with some literature to review. Unfortunately, it's quite the opposite. We know from the research that athletes have a 3 fold higher risk (3.6x) of future hamstring injuries if they have a previous injury. Great peer reviewed research here that includes AFL athletes for context: Skip to the 'incidence/prevalence' heading https://www.jospt.org/doi/epdf/10.2519/jospt.2022.0301 It is hard to manage because the strain (tearing) has occurred at the musculotendinous junction. The further you move away from the muscle belly and toward the tendon, you decrease vascularisation. Basically, less blood flow and slower repair. Yep, spot on. As hard as it is to accept, Clayton will have to manage this for the rest of his career. That sounds more dramatic than it is, but it's a fact. During the season and future pre-seasons will now incorporate extra and or modified workouts to mitigate reinjury. However, that's why football clubs have the best medical staff.21 points

The Run Home for pick #4 Richmond don't have their 1st pick so won't be looking to 'lose' games. They play the bottom 3 sides so are more likely to go up not down the ladder. GC have many winnable games, depending on which GCS turns up Dockers don't have their 1st pick and will be desperate to win games but doubt they will win many as they play the top 3 teams and last year's premiers. Swans have a softish draw so will probably go up unless they put the 'cue in the rack'... It looks like Freo will deliver pick 4 or 5 - more likely pick 4. if GCS win a few to impress a new coach. Their second pick # 23/24 which we hold, will slide due to the number of Academy players in the top 10/first round.14 points

My mixer, rode caster pro 2, usually handles all of that and there is little to no post production needed. It's basically a fully integrated audio production studio. All the audio comes in on separate channels and mixes it all together and does the post production for you. My audio is one one channel and @george_on_the_outer & @binman audio comes in together on the their own channel through zencastr an online app for audio and video recording which also does pretty good post production and mixes of each track. I also have another laptop setup which has Skype on it to take calls and that comes through on a separate channel and my mixer has a soundboard to play the voicemails. I can also hook up my phone to the mixer via Bluetooth to take calls or play sounds from my phone on a separate channel too but the Bluetooth connection can fail and while I was interviewing Steven May it did and I had to put him on loudspeaker and hold it up to my mic. Long story which I think I've written about on Demonland. The issue I had this week was with my internet connection. We've been having spotty internet from Telstra the past few days and anyone listening to the stream last night would have heard the audio breaking up occasionally. The audio coming out on the stream was going through my mixer so that audio saved on my mixer would have been unusable. My audio going into the mixer on my channel was fine but the audio from my cohosts (coming in over the crappy internet connection) going into the mixer was the choppy audio that was breaking up. Neither binman nor george was hearing the audio breaking up on their end when either of them was speaking so the crappy audio was my internet connection. Incidentally they weren't hearing my audio break up over our connection when I spoke so go figure. Luckily I connect with my cohosts online through zencastr which saves my audio (which isn't needed because I can just use the channel going directly from my mic into my mixer), it saves binman's audio from his end and George's from his end. All of our audio are separately saved up into the cloud and zencastr does it's own post production and I can download each track separately. The post production on zencastr takes awhile which is why I was up so late as I was waiting for it to finish and then download the files to me. So despite the audio issues that anyone listening live would have heard I had 3 clean audio tracks from each of the hosts to use. I wasn't happy with the audio saved to zencastr from me as I think my audio mix from my mixer sounds much better than the post production of my audio from my mic on zencastr. I actually think my cohosts audio that is produced on zencastr is slightly better than the audio mix of their audio that comes from them to my mixer but it's not that much better to justify the extra time/work that is involved in putting all the files together. I try to start recording in zencastr and on my mixer at exactly the same time in case I have to mix and match audio from different sources. If the recordings aren't started at exactly same time there is a bit of stitching together to make sure all the audio lines up where it should and my cohosts aren't starting to answer a question before I've asked it. That can happen if not done correctly. The issue that I had with the first upload of the show for download on the podcasting apps was because I didn't level out my audio in Audacity when I merged our audio together. Their audio used the zencastr post production and mine was from my mixer. Both are at -16 LUFFS. My mixer and Zencastr must do something different in the post production and the result without me doing further post production when I joined them together was what was initially uploaded to the server with my audio being much quieter than my cohosts. It was very late and the audio sounded ok in my headphones. I noticed that the audio waveform was smaller for my sections but it sounded ok to me at 1:30am and I wanted to get the podcast out so people could have it in the morning and i wouldn't be able to tinker with it until later in the day and at the time I didn't think I needed to anyway. It wasn't until I was driving to work and listening to it in the car through the Apple Podcast app that I realised just how soft my audio was compared to the audio from my cohosts. I then went back and equalized/normalized the tracks (in audacity). Normally this is all handled on board my mixer. I use zencastr to connect to my hosts because it sounds much better than when we used to connected over Skype. I don't usually use the audio that is saved on zancastr because I'm more than fine with the sound from my mixer even though both Binman and George come in on the same channel through zencastr. Sometimes there is a discrepancy in their audio levels but it's nothing major and if it is really bad I can always use the zencastr tracks and level them out. Zencastr is a good fall back for these issues and I always like to have multiple recordings on different devices. I record on my mixer, on zencastr and locally in audacity on my computer if one or more fails. If one of my cohosts have dodgy internet then I would be in trouble because then their audio saved to zencastr would be crap and their audio coming through to my mixer (and in turn to the recording on my computer in audacity) would be crap too. The only way around that is to have each cohost save their audio track directly on their own end either on their computer or on a recording device and then send me the audio file but that creates more work (I'd then have to do my own post production on each track) and perhaps an extra cost of an audio device for each cohost. Anyway I hope you read the wall of text because it took me a while to write it. 😜11 points

I fixed an audio issue with the initial upload that had my audio channel a lot softer than Binman and George. It probably wouldn't be as noticeable with headphones (as I didn't pick it up at 1:30am last night) but it was on my car audio. I have equalised the audio so you might need to remove the download and re-download. Sometimes that doesn't work with Apple podcast so apologies if that's the case.10 points

All the pressure on Brisbane in this one, Two of our top 5 players not on the paddock, bad vibes going back to the G. If they get their aholes handed to them it will cause irreversible psychological damage in many ways to their club and season. Our loading phase has finished, we should be up and about again the thought of having 5 of the next 6 weeks at the G would have the group in a good place. Back on the G to reinforce our mid-zone pressure systems and other nuisances within our Gameplan eg. Forward line.😂 Beware the team coming off 2 soft kills, fast start key to this game, hit them hard early catch them off guard and still in holiday mode. If we win this they know top 2 ain't happening for them, they can't play away from the Gabba. No Top 2 For Lions = Game Over They are doomed in the years to come the Gabba is being refurbished for the Olympics, they don't win this game they ain't winning a Premiership in the time it takes to refurbish the Gabba (years). All the pressure on them. Tear them a new one Demons, Give em Hell !!! Up the Dees.8 points

He also played in a lower scoring era than Dunstall and Lockett, and also in an era where the goal kicking load was shared more evenly between players (not primarily the full forward). In the years Buddy has been active, the average team score was 87 points, whilst it was 99 (2 goals) more in the time of Dunstall and Lockett. Also, since Buddy has been active, he is the only player to have kicked 100 goal in a season. The only player to have even kicked 90 in that time was Fevola (the same year). Between 1983 and 1999, when Lockett was playing, there were only 4 years where a player didn't kick 100 goals (Beasley 1985 - 93 goal, John Longmire 1990 - 98 goals, Tony Modra 1997 - 81 goals, and Scott Cumming 1999 - 88 goals). Nobody has kicked more than 80 goals since 2009! During Lockett's 17 year career, there were 21 occasions where a player kicked 100 goals. Buddy is underrated as a potential GOAT. The nearest goalkicking rivals of his era have played about he same number of games (J Riewoldt and Hawkins) and still haven't even kicked 800 goals (779 and 772 - Buddy has 1061).7 points

BBB leads to the right areas that will push and pull Andrews and make him commit to go or allow easy spot ups. But we have to use the right option. And we have to move it quickly. The longer we take and the more we dump it in, the more we play into the strengths of the opposition and not BBB. It has been an overemphasis on helping our defence in the past - but now I can see us trying to get it going but it sputters unless you constantly reinforce it and not dwell on the errors and the clangers. Take Angus for example - some on here want him traded for his misuse but he is one of the few that will take on the corridor and when he doesn’t hit it - it stands out - because the rest are just kicking it sideways and abdicating the responsibility. I think Friday night is a great opportunity to test our quick movement forward and marrying that with our press to see how we balance the two best.7 points

Yep agree, tagging two mids at once just takes away our midfield strength as well. Why have two starting mids play a negating role whilst the other is left to then fight and scrap from an offensive point of view.. Back our system in. Sparrow imo, is edging close to a break out game in the midfield. He's been building the last couple of weeks. Potential 30 plus on Friday night hopefully.7 points

Podcast won't be up until tomorrow morning (possibly mid morning) as I have to do a bit of post production work. Usually I am able to just take the mix recorded into my mixer from the audio over the internet but as i had some choppy internet connection at home my cohosts were breaking up every now and again and it would not be a good listen. Anyone who listened live would have heard what it sounded like. Luckily I have multiple recordings and one of those is the recordings of my cohosts that is recorded locally on their machines. I don't usually use that mix as it takes longer for me to put together and is only used in cases like this. I won't be able to work on that until the morning now so the final product won't be available until then. Apologies.7 points

Not ideal, but a silver lining being we'll finally get a chance to look at BBB & JVR together Takes an injury to play our best two forwards together 🙈6 points

Interested in @binman's question around whether our drop off in accuracy is indicative of a league-wide drop off due to weather and fatigue / loading, so I looked at all team's scoring compated to expectation (using Champion Data's calculation srouced from the Herald Sun) by round this season and calculated the average difference per round (see below data visualisation). League-wide, the average (grey line) looks to hover around the expected difference of 0 as you would expect, but it varies with some early rounds (3 and 4) being lower than average with the 'worst' round being round 11. In saying that, round 12 and 13 were actually better than expected and this was when we performed most poorly other than round 16. In terms of Melbourne's performance (red dots) in poor weather / rain, I can recall round 5 vs Ess, round 9 vs Port, round 15 vs Gee and round 16 vs GWS. The first two we scored above expectation, the last two well below. It's difficult to assess the fatigue / loading aspect for us, but there looks to be something in this if we assume we load around our bye in round 14. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the season unfolds from here as you wouldn't expect there to be loading from here, although fatigue / rain / wind / cold may be a factor. And sometimes, it could just be luck :)6 points

BBB isn’t there to chase or tackle, and he’s no contested marking beast. But he had 1 goal last week, had a free 25m out that Sparrow kicked under advantage and hit the post so could easily have had 3 last week. He also leads which is vital to making space for the others. Bring JVR in to play with him, and combined they’ll have Andrews dropping his head as he is wont to do when getting beat.. Schache can’t be picked ahead of either BBB, JVR, TMac in a moon boot, Joel Smith etc etc, he’s not AFL standard6 points

Im a bit surprised at this sweeping statement. Many followers of the Southern League have watched his junior games in awe. Quite a few said he won a flag off his own back. Modest too. Not available as Father-son, His father only played 90 games for the saints and the backlash against getting more shorties has been butt of many jokes that St. Kilda ran out of size small jumpers. I believe he is in the top echelon of talent at the club. Well top 8 anyway and will only get better. Anyone this talented will find a spot even though he is small and light. If it is to play as a defensive forward yes, he hasnt the weight for that and may not have it ever, but we need to include him for his kicking accuracy and his time and space cleanliness. I think he is that good.6 points

I think its silly to rule it out as 'Ever'. He was drafted as a 1st rounder playing as a pure half forward/wing. So he's got the talent in that area that Goodwin will experiment with imo. @Demon Dynasty Even spoke to Jake at Training and Bowey mentioned that this is an option that the club may look into over the next year or two.6 points

Interestingly, what impressed me the most is that his first two touches were turnovers, but he still managed to work his way into the game and do some good things. That demonstrated a good mental ability to play in the present. I just love how our FD has overseen the rise and maturity of Jackson (RIP), Kozzy, Rivers, Bowey, McVee, JVR, Chandler and now Woey in the last 4 years. It says a lot for our development, our mental health team and our overall club processes. I have complete confidence that the players coming through the door at the MFC these days are getting the best mentoring, teaching and care possible in a football club. What a journey this club has been on over the last decade.6 points

Sounds weird but I’d love to see Kozzie and bowey swap positions as something left field, even for a quarter. Every time I see Bowser at training he is slotting them through from all angles , and I’d hate to be a small forward being chased by Koz. Might give him a new lease on life ala Nick Daicos and be more creative.5 points

67,049 members is a pleasant surprise! I am pleased to be proven wrong! As I thought we would struggle. The win against St. Kilda on Saturday night probably helped. I have been a fanatical Melbourne Demons member since 1998 (obviously not as long as others) and to see us grow from barely having around 20,000 members to now getting close to 70,000 really is an amazing achievement that brings tears of joy to my eyes. Especially because of the hardships our Club has faced over the years during our 57 year Premiership drought. As for a breakdown of membership numbers and the different categories. I think that is a question you need to ask the MFC membership department or in a few months time at the next MFC AGM. Personally, I still think we will be unable to reach 70,000+ members this year. But as I previously said, if we continue to have sustained success then memberships will continue to grow. Winning more Premierships is the key for the Melbourne Demons. We continue to do that and memberships will take care of themselves. Everyone loves winners!5 points

After the game, Simon Goodwin bemoaned the fact that his team’s performance against St Kilda was far from perfect but given it was an important contest between fourth and fifth, it matters little that the win against a team battered from pillar to post and minus key players was ugly. The win was the main objective as it is again this week against the Brisbane Lions. The Demons desperately needed validation in the form of victory in their third straight game away from the MCG in a season where the advantage of playing on your home turf can not be underestimated. More than a month since their victory from left field over Collingwood, they return to take a 7 - 1 win/loss record at the home of football into their game against third placed Brisbane who seem to have a primeval fear of this neck of the woods — for the Lions it’s the ultimate hoodoo ground. Up north they’re called Brizvegas suggesting they’re bright and glitzy (except when their light towers crash) but the minute they hit the concourse at Yarra Park they turn into Brizghanistan, a mostly dark place where lights flicker only intermittently. And we know too well how poorly they play in those circumstances. I’m discounting the outcome of last year’s semi final between the clubs as an aberration, the result of a banged up Melbourne side running out of puff and bereft of the fitness required to win a finals matchup. Still, while the Demons’ form has by no means been decisive and they need to improve considerably to beat Brisbane on Friday night. The Lions might have a blind spot when it comes to playing on the MCG but you need do more than just turn up to the ground if you want to win. Since Round 10, Melbourne has undergone what’s known as a “midseason slump” but things definitely started to turn around last week with some subtle changes to the team mix caused by the necessity to take on new challenges after failing to grab winning opportunities in their previous two matches against Geelong and GWS. Despite the fact that Melbourne had less time in the forward half against St Kilda, it managed 50% more goals than in any of its past five games. It marked a desperately needed correction in the way the team converts its opportunities when transitioning into attack, in the first instance delivering much better efficiency in front of goal. This came in a number of forms, resulting from the inclusion of Ben Brown, Christian Petracca spending more time up forward, playing fewer small forwards and a changed midfield mix. The Demons still have the ability to defend ball movement with precision and control from the backline through the middle, an important aspect both against the opposition and in taking field position into attack. But … … still have to lift a few extra cogs if they want to seriously return to the race for the flag and they have all the incentive in the world to do so on Friday night against the Lions. They must surely recall the smarmy way their former captain Dayne Zorko and his entourage acted in their meetings late in the season, the humiliating fall out of the finals in straight sets on home territory and the touch up meted out in their Round 2 encounter up north until the lights went out. All emotional stuff but in every high powered game, there’s always an element of bottled up emotion and energy a team needs to unleash in order to set up victory. The time is right for the Demons to step up to home plate and I’m tipping them to do exactly that. Melbourne to win by 41 points. The loss of Max Gawn through a knee injury in the equivalent game against the Lions in the capital of the sunshine state was the early blow. The impact was felt immediately under the shock of the skipper’s painful departure from the ground and the action. He was out for a month which included the then surprise defeat during the Gather Round at the hands of the Bombers in Adelaide. Christian Salem’s thyroid and knee woes saw him miss a large slab of games early while key talls Ben Brown and Tom McDonald have injuries and form to blame for prolonged absences which affected the team’s forward performance. The biggest loss to injury by far has been the well-documented saga of Clayton Oliver’s hamstring compounded by a week in hospital with infected blisters on the foot and further compounded by further hamstring damage of a complex nature that sees his return pushed back to somewhere near the finals. Bayley Fritsh is out until the finals - the club having to make do with others up forward in the vital games to come in the interim. One other statistic stands out to my mind. The Demon’s exciting and electric goalkicking sensation Kozzie Pickett, who booted four goals and earned a two week suspension in Round 1. Since his return from the sin bin, his productivity has gone into decline and from Round 11, he has kicked only four goals in five games. Considering that he booted six in one game against Port Adelaide last year, his lack of productivity in goal scoring is a worry even if the number of his pressure acts may have improved slightly. This is really interesting and good take. I've always seen him as someone that will potentially step into the midfield. To me he's very similar to Zak Butters from Port Adelaide in terms of speed, size and toughness. I mean, we genuinely underestimate how hard he is for such a little fella. I remember Jason Taylor's comment in the 2020 draft video where he stated that Bowey could be a Sam Mitchell type midfielder. So the potential to move up the ground is there.5 points

It will probably be Buddy's final game, packed house at the SCG so they will be highly motivated and go all out to give him the send off he deserves. Often forgotten in the GOAT discussions. By then I think we will be locked into 4th so the result of the last game won't matter.5 points

I don't think that's goal kicking practice per se. I reckon that's just mucking around before or after training. Yucking it up for the social media cameras.5 points

Asked Bowzer about this possibility over the weekend. Said he could see it happening at some point but felt he'd need more serious training time to pull this off in terms of making it a permanent (change up) role from what he's currently used to. Forward craft learnings needed beforehand. Suspect the goal kicking training is for the occasions he does drift forward and gets the odd shot at goal.5 points
