  1. Just listening to Angus's mum on ABC Grandstand. What a terrific person. Raised 4 boys, 3 to elite level sport and with them all out of the nest has taken in Luke J, Kossie and Trent Rivers into their home. An inspiration.

  2. No.39 2010 round 17 v Swans at MCG The Demons were still in a coma after two wooden spoons in 2008 and 2009. There was signs of improvement and a youth based recovery through loading up on top 20 draft picks and the momentum from senior players like James McDonald, Brad Green and Cameron Bruce. The year had started poorly then a few good wins led to hope including a win over the previously unbeaten Lions. But the highlight of the year was a round 17 clash with the Swans. They were in 4th place and firing but on this day, all the Demons fired. The Dees opened well and were attacking at all costs. An 8 goal opening quarter (to 2 goals) had the Swans panicked and by half time we were 50 points up (12.6 to 4.4) . As we were smiling and hoping, the third quarter saw another avalanche and we were up by 14 goals at 3/4 quarter time. We were pressing for the 100 point win but settled for 73 point victory as the heat subsided. The amazing indigenous skills of Jurrah, Davey, Wonaeamirri and Bennell were on show. Jamar controlled the ruck and showed his All Australian form. Brad Green kicked 5 goals and Sylvia, Bruce and Jones controlled the midfield. Watts, Morton and Scully showed us the bright future of the youth. Frawley and Rivers showed huge ability. All the signs were good. We celebrated and I remember thinking this side had the makings of finals potential. I think the Swans coach Paul Roos also actually saw the positives for the Dees. It was a shame that Neeld tore it apart. Melbourne 22.10.142 defeated Sydney 10.9.69

  3. Well now, that was a [censored] of a day ! But..did we see a potential Melbourne Cup winner go around at Morphettville? The run of Russian Camelot after being 3 wide at the back of the field the entire trip, produced a withering run for the final 200m over 2500m at only its 5th start, with what was not really an ideal preparation. He just lawn mowered, the (unbeaten at Morphettville) Dalasan who hit the front, over the final 100m. Hes now pretty much equal favourite now with Master of Wine and Surprise Baby on the markets i saw for the Melbourne Cup, at around 12-15/1. I thought a bit of rain overnight was a little bit more than was expected and perhaps didnt help the chances of some of the picks today. I must say though that the run by the 4yo mare Lakhani Rose from barrier 17 out of 16 barriers was an absolute barnstormer, just missing by a nose on the line ! At only her 10th start, just might pay to follow her. Kayla Crowther and DR Jolly had a few successful combinations on the day and seem to be a good team. Cant really shed any light on Ballarat meeting tomorrow, and wont be leaving the house to look over the fence either ! Frighteningly cold here and weve had a fair bit of rain. The rain guage overflowed last week and i havent ventured out the back paddock to reset it yet. Dont forget the PICK 7 is on again for the meeting. A free shot at 20K. I think the winning punter today only had 3 or 4 wins and a few placings, so you never know ! Enter here: https://pick7.racing.com/ .....now im going back to my movie. Night folks.

  5. How good was White before they denied him his run and leap at the centre bounce. Clean and direct knock out to team mates. An outstanding feature of our great game. What a curse the AFL rules committee is. And how good were our fleet of left foot runners - Yze, Woewodin, A McDonald and Powell. Add Rigoni, Leoncelli and Johnstone and we had a weapon. How come we could never take full advantage?

  6. The Daniher era 98-06 should have resulted in a flag. 2000 Essendon were too strong but 04 we were on top & lost the last 4 games to finish outside the top 4 .. just seem it was always a bridge too far for them.

  7. Watching it right now, such a funny moment for Wiz’s 6th goal. A great grab by Jeff to deny Robbo taking a speckie! So much excitement in that forward line.

  8. I'm so sorry that the youth of today never got to see this team play. Jesus Christ they were good. Adem Yze I owe you an apology. I always knew you were a champ, but bloody hell you had mad skills, and were much harder at the pill than I remembered. We had stars. Unfortunate that we came up against a team of thugs who would do "whatever it takes" to win a flag. Before I die I want to see us physically maul a side to win a flag.

  9. All teams need good people to help out when youngsters are brought into a club. Mother (and father?) Brayshaw certainly fit that bill. All of their boys seem like genuinely nice fellas, and that is a direct reflection on the parents. It is a very good thing that they have opened their doors to our new generation of players. Thank you Brayshaws....

  10. https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/afl-2020-coronavirus-covid19-updates-latest-afl-news-return-to-play-date-testing-gillon-mclachlan/news-story/b30aecd9389a8a48a68b87fc27be0ece I’m not sure if this has already been discussed but with the NT pushing their case saying they can have crowds I wonder whether (like the Suns) we’re pushing to still play our usual Alice Springs game this year. Would people here be supportive of it?

  16. Given that most of the league are going to be as rusty as hell in round 2, and there is going to be extended benches, there may be a slight argument in favour of Bennell getting there for round 2 - If he really is tracking well. Play him on extremely limited minutes and hope his natural talent shows through.

  17. Fine. 2020 can be a 16 team comp and they can sit it out.

  18. Exactly. Neeld was a pathetic excuse for a coach. One of the worst ever.

  19. Thanks for posting! A great watch on a cold winter’s saturday. The game is so different now, probably better viewing back then. Tough as blazes, too. What a great Demons team - I wonder how they would fare in the modern world?

  20. WA Premier keeps on saying they wont lift the border restrictions so no idea of when WA may open. The plus is that they have as I understand been letting in fifo mining workers all along so there is some precendence for exceptions. WCE v Richmond or Collingwood at Perth would be a nice opening round game

  21. Jakovich was awesome even before coming to Melbourne. I was living in SA the year before he was drafted to the Dees. There were 2 gun full forwards in the SANfl. Scott Hodges was playing for Port Adelaide, who were premiers that year, kicked 100+ goals. He had the benefit of a dominant midfield. Jako played for Woodville who finished bottom. He also kicked 100+ goals in what was basically a team making up the numbers. It was an amazing effort. I was elated when he was drafted to the Demons. I travelled over to Melbourne for this game against North, and saw one of the most incredible displays of forward play. 20 scoring shots - what a star!

  22. I was at this game and every Demon supporter was in exhilaration. Jakovich is the most exciting player that I have seen in the red and blue. He brought fans to the game. He excited young and old. My late father thought he was incredible. He’d jump up every time Jakovich got the ball. It was such a shame that his body (and perhaps his attitude) didn’t allow him to play more. He was a sensation.

  28. Absolutely. Peter Matera was ready to sign and come across. Dees would have grabbed him with PSD#1. WA media went nuts and camped out the front of his house. The Eagles players and coaches put pressure on him to stay and I recall the club offered him leadership credentials. Matera played for 5 more years across 1998 to 2002. He would have been a star in the MCG and might have helped us in the 1998, 2000 & 2002 finals runs. Certainly would have been the Biggest get since Templeton and Moore moves across.
