  1. Love how Jono Brown just called the selwoods out for playing for free kicks and the umps falling for it. Finally someone in the media saying it like it is

  3. Bernie mentioned earlier in the year that he intended to play for as long as he could, even if that meant mentoring young players in the twos in his last year. I like the attitude - no denial, just acceptance that father time will eventually catch up. On this year's trajectory, that ought to be 2018, but anything could happen and I'm happy to have him about for another year. It would be nice if he could bring up the 100 MFC games - only 17 to go!

  4. Aaron vandenBerg has now re signed for 2018! http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-09-22/forgotten-demon-signs-on-for-a-fresh-start "...the Demons are keen to keep him for another season as they understand his value..." Well done and hope he has an injury free run next year. ps will mods change title to show this. Thanks

  5. To trade the Weed would be a massive vote of no confidence in our recruiters and development staff. It's just Eddie fondling himself. Not going to happen.

  8. To trade Oliver for 3 draft picks would be a terrible idea. He's clearly a cut above anything we've picked in the last 20 years. He rates as possibly our most important player going forward. Those 3 draft picks could be Watts, Salem and Tyson and none hold a torch to Olivee. Steve your nuts and should be roundly scolded for talking nonsense

  9. The trade talk surrounding Weed is some of the funniest I've heard and if posters buy it they have genuinely NFI about anything regarding football lists and list management. Let's understand a bit about Sam first and the context surrounding him as a player and what the word 'development' looks like: Having come off pretty much no pre-season leading into his last year of TAC cup (his draft year), he managed only five games at TAC cup level as well as the game he played against the Northern Blues where he showed enormous potential. The injury was due to an ankle stress fracture that he eventually had operated on and he also had an iron deficiency at the same time. Sam was touted as a top three pick at one stage based on his talent levels for his type of player and what he had shown as an underaged player the year previous. So he had next to no pre-season leading into his last year with the Rangers, only managed five games at TAC cup level that year before having an operation, and then he had to carefully manage and rehab an extremely delicate injury that can easily be re-aggravated. Have a think about how much conditioning and fitness he lost during that time and compare it to his contemporaries at that level? Yet we still had the balls to take him inside the top 10 on the back of all that! So into the club he came on a very modified first pre-season with the full knowledge and understanding that he was going to take time. Much more time than your average first year underdeveloped forward given his injury history. And look what he achieved in his first year at Casey on the back of all of that conditioning he missed. Granted, this year was clearly more difficult for him but I still saw games in which he played and looked like an AFL level player playing in a lower league. In what will be his second full pre-season both in the gym and on the track, I know that we're going to see him a lot more at AFL level next year and I also know that he's going to show why he was picked inside the top 10. As soon as his body allows, his AFL level talent will shine on the big stage. The Weed is not going anywhere.

  11. Our first pick in the 2018 draft as well? Where does Eddie sign?

  12. Goody just indicated on SEN that Bernie is prepared to play footy at Casey next year if his form warrants it. That was part of the conversation that they had before he re-signed. BV just wants to keep playing and he is happy to mentor blokes playing at Cranbourne if that's what the club asks of him.

  13. I think Roos' love of the Dees is genuine: "This is my fourth year back in Melbourne, I grew up in Melbourne, I barrack for Melbourne, go to Melbourne games with a Melbourne scarf on when I’m not working..." He spent his football life batting for the underdog and finally won a Swans flag but only after resurrecting the 'The Bloods' spirit from the perennial underdog; South Melbourne. So it is not surprising that the creation of a silver tail team (Giants) would not cut the mustard with him. Roos will always be my hero especially after reading this: "....If they (GWS) were to win a premiership, fine. I’d rather Melbourne win it

  25. What I like about it is he doesn't mince words and as he said, he's not re-writing history. GWS was born as a result of North not going to Gold Coast and the AFL having to go "bang bang" in adding a 17th and 18th team to the competition. He paints a very true picture of the shenanigans the Giants played up in NSW and the insults that followed. And Sheedy can GAGF.

  28. I don't see it as telling at all... considering his run with injuries and lack of game time, and considering he is out of contract, it was probably the only way the club could go... he wasn't delisted and he has no real currency in a trade situation, so a one year re-signing is the best outcome for all.

  29. I suspect @spirit of norm smithwas bored with the lack of rumours so created one! So easy for people to believe this line: "Apparently Pies will ask for potential trade for Weideman. They see him as future Full Forward alongside Darcy Moore". Nothing whatsoever, to lend any cred to the claim. Its not even a rumour!

  31. Jay Clark's take on the horse trading for Leve rhttp://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/more-news/jake-lever-is-out-of-contract-so-melbourne-has-upper-hand-in-bid-to-land-adelaide-defender/news-story/77de2b236f1a797b08d5fb5016b1abee The deal sounds quite fair: "The deal will be five years at least on about $750,000 a year, instantly making him one of the top three of four paid players at Melbourne, and he’s exactly what Simon Goodwin’s men need to help jump into the top four...But they aren’t parting with two-first round choices without something else coming back and need only look back one year ago when the Crows refused to part with a pair of aces for Carlton’s Bryce Gibbs for some affirmation". He goes on to say that because Lever (unlike Gibbs) is out of contract mfc hold the upper hand and outlines some trade scenarios. On the down side he thinks it could go down to the 11th hour. I had thought both clubs would want it over and done with and move on to other deals. Adelaide have shown they can play hardball. Just hope we hold our nerve even if it does drag out.

  33. Geelong don't have a first this year, Richmond hold that. Plus Menzel is a free agent. Still don't think we'll give up anything near 2 firsts for Lever, maybe a 1st and 2nd, or 1st and other arrangement.

  34. My boy was involved in the GWS academy this year and consequently I have had a lot more exposure to them. I'll be cheering loudly for them now, for they have done more for the Canberra and Southern NSW region in the last couple of years than the AFL and all other fly by clubs (North, Sydney, Dee's) put together. If this then equates to more AFL players in the region, meaning more teams, stronger competitions and then greater opportunity for our kids (hopefully my youngest would benefit from all this) to develop, then that's an even better reason. Being involved in coaching and I can categorically state it is so much more difficult for talented players in the Canberra/NSW Region (excluding Murray) to make it - for you don't develop the necessary AFL skills my beating up on consistently weaker opponents. As to the money, well the AFL will only find another way to spend it. Probably by help building a summer training centre for the Magpies; or maybe taking over the Netball competition; or maybe giving it to the clubs who will promptly spend it all on one elite player, another dozen coaches and (for some) a suspect medical program harvesting cows!!!! Besides seeing the tigers get there with there easy draw, or having any team coached by a Scott being involved; is more gut churdling than Coke mixed with 10 day old milk that has been left in the Queensland sun on a fly infested pig farm.

  37. My problem with Bernardi is and let me quote Scott Morrison in Feb of this year. Treasurer Scott Morrison reminded Bernardi - "At the last election he was elected as a Liberal senator by Liberal voters to support the Liberal Party in this Parliament and be part of our team," Morrison told reporters on Monday morning. So no sooner does he get elected as liberal, he jumps ship as a conservative. That's all well and good but then he has the temerity to say "The same-sex marriage advocates are asking the Australian people to write them the equivalent of a blank cheque," Isn't that a bit rich coming from the bloke who happily got elected on the liberal party "blank cheque" and then filled in the cheque details signing it "Australian Conservative Party". Not sure that Bernardi knows the meaning of the word hyprocricy.

  38. There is no doubt that we have been seduced by opening a present from the draft without really knowing what's inside. It's exciting when a new player comes to the club particularly when that player is one of the best of his vintage. And over 10 years it's mainly what we've enjoyed as Demon supporters. But it's the position of the hack team, not one looking to win finals. Our objective is to put as much talent on the park as we can at the one time. That is not achieved by trading out talent to get in younger talent, all that does is spread your talent over a longer period and limits the talent you can put on the field at the one time therefore limiting your chances of winning finals. IF Weideman is worth pick 6 it's indicative that he's loaded with talent. We traded a future first rounder to be able to get him to compliment the impressive list of first rounders we'd accumulated in previous years and bunch our talent. The last thing we want to do is dilute our bunched talent and trading Weideman would be a huge mistake and clearly won't happen. It's why Watts won't be traded for a pick. It's why none of our young early picks will go anywhere for Lever. What's the point in trading out someone of equal talent to who you get in? The object is to improve your list. It's why jackaub's suggestion and position is just simply wrong.

  39. I have no concern about his strength or conditioning. They will improve over time. It doesn't explain why the ball flies over his head every time. He simply can't read the play. We took a punt on a player who looked great in the under 14's but was injured through most of his maturing years.

  42. ...and how do you think Stringer will be able to respect the senior coach after the way this has been handled. If their ploy was to ruffle a few feathers and get the players back on track then it's a funny way to do it. I would think there is no way Stringer can return to the dogs now.

  43. The real cost is integrity and culture. Garland deserves to play out the contract he signed in good faith. Imagine if players decided mid contact they wanted more money because their value went up. It works both ways. If you are mad he is on the list then your dissatisfaction should be directed at list management and not garland.

  45. Bernie is very comfortably best 22! As for kick-ins, don't the detractors watch other AFL teams... all the kick-in specialists stuff up once in a while. Bernie has a few bloopers but offsets this by being a genuine hard nut who can unsettle the star performers in other teams. He probably needs to be relieved of the high-pressure defensive stuff occasionally. Bernie has a lot to offer as a forward (in small doses). Being a competitive beast, he thrives on a challenge. Haters, keep telling him he is washed-up and we'll get another decent three years out of him!

  47. Bernie is far more useful than a 5th round drafting pick. At this point he is best 22, if he gets pushed out by youth next season then that's not a bad thing. Good sensible signing.
