  1. Lots of sound and fury in the media atm. Clarry, Bugg, Clarry again, ANB/Lewis/30 seconds, Cripps and his poor old leg, thuggery, unsociable, all kinds of stuff. Much most of it unfair or uninformed or just ignorant. That guys and gals is the sound of RELEVANCE. No one bothers to dish out this stuff to teams that win 2 games a year. They do it to teams that have [censored] them off by beating their team. Other sides put up with this sh!t all the time. We have waited years for this. Did we go through the last decade so we could keep being everyone's "second team"? No one fears or respects sad sacks or "second teams". This is the payoff, What the wait was for. We don't need their approval, their sympathy, their anything. Let them rage and fume. Fuggem. Meanwhile we will keep winning, and then win some more. And then win some more just to rub it in. GO DEMONS!

  4. He actually signed a comtract extension with us weeks/months before he quit to head home. And from memory we didn't draft him, he came as part of the Hogan package.

  8. Playing Hogan in the goal square and bombing the ball onto his head is unfair to him and a waste of his talent. He needs to be playing CHF and roaming about the ground. He has bloody good endurance and his field kicking is also strong. We get more value from him upfield than as a deep forward.

  12. This is bordering on delusional. Watts in 12 games has kicked more goals than Pedersen has ever in any season. I know goals aren't the only metric, but they are a pretty key one for forwards, I'd have thought. Hogan kicked 40 goals in his first and second seasons at AFL level. It's not about what he could be in the future, it's about how good he is now. Pedersen is still in the side because a) Watts is out injured, b) Hogan is rusty and c) as reward for his efforts during the season when our tall contingent fell apart. He's a spare parts player. One that played his role to aplomb, but still a spare parts player.

  13. I'm coping well thanks. I've been on the big footy sites of Wet Toast, Collingwood and Carlton, just to give them a bit of curry. It hasn't been received well, but I've enjoyed it. We've been copping it for years and I'll be damned if I won't give any back.

  15. The debate/discussion between Binman and ProDee on how the Lever trade would impact our team is one of the best exchanges I've read on Demonland for some time. I didn't get involved then as they presented their views in a way that extra commentary was unnecessary. The weekend provided more fuzziness to any potential trade. Frost played an outstanding game and showed some fairly unique footy attributed for one player. Extreme athleticism and excellent footy skills. There were no glaring footy errors that I recall. Tommy Mac showed a level of competence and confidence forward that suggest maybe a permanent forward role is possible. Lever was outstanding after quarter time for Adelaide. What team wouldn't take him if he wanted to come. I don't shudder the way ProD does when any of our tall backs have the ball. I think Oscar's disposal is much better than represented here and whilst Frost doesn't have huge finesse he very effective and improving quickly. But having said that I love Lever but if he wanted to come it would be great but expensive. If he wants to come to Melbourne city (as with Fyfe and Kelly) it's difficult to understand why we wouldn't be a very desirable destination for all the reasons we know. ProD's suggestion is we attract Lever and Z Jones and use Frost as a trade plus draft picks and other garnish if appropriate. But given the recent performance of our talls and assuming that is maintained and improved (T Mac is new to forward play and Oscar and Frost are improve almost by the game) how important is Lever? Would the incremental benefit be worth the cost or should we look to use what we have to attract (say) Kelly? IMO he would provide what we don't have whereas Lever is just incrementally better. Did the weekends performances change anyone's views?

  17. Paying $800-1mill a year is not good for a cohesive team like ours has become. We have a combo of home grown loyalists, -Gawn,Watts,Jones,Viney,Jetta,TomMc,Smith,Hoges 4 good journeymen in Pedo,Garlett, Vince and Lewis, drafted guns-Petracca,Oliver,Frost,Hunt ,Tyson etc Having a "Marquee player" builds resentment in a list when they don't fire. Our model is based on "profit share" sysytem as it should be.

  18. For anyone who saw the Goodwin embrace of Kent post the Carlton win, it's clear he plays this week. Yes he started slowly but he built in to the game and the defenisve acts were there....which is what Goodwin was looking for. They gave Wagner another shot this week utilising the same thinking and he didn't disappoint. They knew that all of Hogan, Kent and Smith would be underdone but it was a calculated risk to get some AFL match time in to them whilst hopefully still pulling off a win. Tyson in (if he comes up), Stretch out.

  19. ...and it looks like Bernie has a few more games in him after this year https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/melbourne-veteran-bernie-vince-says-he-would-accept-playing-at-vfl-level-in-final-years-of-his-career/news-story/864fefdaf72fa845323e439c11cd22b0 “I’ve had really good chats with Goody (Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin) ... he just said I’m not going to put a restriction on your age or how many games you can play...You just keep playing as you’re performing. And whether that means I play on for another couple of years, that might mean play VFL if I’m not in the best 18 or 22.. And I’m fully accepting of that.” Bernie gets criticised a bit on here and like all players he makes mistakes but the 'protection' he gives our youngsters cannot be overestimated. Never moreso than this year when our stronger players (Jones, Vand, Hogan) have been out of the team. Really, he should have been rested rather than endure great pain and injections in his toe but because of other injuries we couldn't afford to. Bernie is as brave as can be. That Bernie is happy to play at VFL level if necessary speaks volumes about him. Glad that he will get another contract with us.

  20. Coping ? As quite a senior and conservative member of 44 years standing I have shocked family and friends by having the MFC monogram tattooed on the underside of my right forearm . Had it done after the QB game to celebrate our fourth consecutive win over the Pies .

  21. Talk of trading Frost is both wrong and highly disrespectful. He is a key reason we are doing as well as we are. There is no other KPD in the comp like him, he's unique and he's ours.

  25. As of the start of next season Vince, Lewis, and Jones will be 31, 31, and 30 years of age, respectively. Aside from those we have Viney (23), Oliver (19), and arguably Tyson (24) as our three main "A-grade" on-ballers. Additionally, we have Petracca (22) who is more likely to pinch hit between on-ball and half-forward, while Brayshaw (22) is an uncertainty at this stage. The rest either specialise in other positions (Hunt, Hannan, Salem, Melksham) or are depth (ANB, Harmes, Stretch, VB). In short, while we don't have the most dominant on-ball brigade in the competition, additional "A-grade" midfielders are a must. Whether this Jack Higgins kid will dramatically improve ours or anyone's midfield is unclear to me. Considering both our stocks of tall forwards and backs are relatively strong at the moment and in the foreseeable future, how much extra value will Lever bring? If the MFC were to acquire Lever I wouldn't be complaining as he is a phenomenal talent. However, if we had to choose out of say Lever and Z. Jones, I'd want the latter. Additionally, I wouldn't mind seeing the club target another small forward, such as D.Smith or Matera, to compliment Garlett as well as replace the likes of Kent, Kennedy, or JKH.

  27. OK, this is what I said,: "There is, of course, the question of what to do with the McDonalds and Frost if we were lucky enough to recruit Lever. My guess is that Frost would be traded. Oscar is developing well and at 197cms he has a tonne of physical development left. Splitting up the brothers is also problematic." This comment was made before Tom McDonald morphed into Peter Hudson on the weekend, where balls mysteriously landed in his hands in marking contests and he slotted goals that were once beyond his pay grade. To me, there wasn't much point securing Lever and retaining the aforementioned players when we also have the 191cm high leaping Joel Smith, who is also thereabouts. Has the weekend changed my views ? Yes, to an extent. Imo, Oscar and Frost have both been better without Tom down back with them. I don't like all three in the backline together due to their kicking skills out of defence*, plus, we now have enough evidence to suggest Oscar and Sam have grown without Tom. It's been win/win. I'm still not convinced Tom will be able to keep up his strong performances in the forward-line, but I'm a lot more open-minded than I was 3 weeks ago. I'd be silly to ignore the evidence. I agree with the need for outside speed and I agree the need for Lever is less than it was a month ago. But gee, Lever will be a star. *There is kicking and there is kicking. Oscar and Frost are becoming reasonably reliable in that they usually hit easy targets, but there is no flair or creativity in their kicking and I still have concerns with them under pressure or their ability to hit a difficult kick that's required at the right time and moment.

  29. There's something wrong with the way we (collectively) look at these things I think. Pretty much every AFL fan I've ever come across wishes they'd stop farting about with the rules, but then as soon as something happens that upsets us, everyone madly start flipping through the rule book looking through which rule we can change to address it. Then we wonder why our umpires can't police the game properly. Like has been said a dozen times, this issue rearing its head is a problem for why Carlton are 16th on the ladder, not a problem for the rules committee. ANB would have had to kick for goal if we'd been playing against Geelong, would probably have missed, and they'd have had a shot at winning. But nah, it's the rules fault.

  33. What rule. None of this is in the AFL rules. It's not written anywhere. It's all in Lethlean's head. Nothing that says when the 30 seconds starts. Nothing that says when the ump can call play on. Nothing that says what happens if the player doesn't take a shot on goal. They are literally making it up on the fly. Only an incompetent organisation would do that. Or one that is corrupt. Or one that simply doesn't GAF. Take your pick.

  38. I hope we arent trying to get him or Kelly, I can only think of 2 big trades Hawks: Burgoyne and Dogs: Boyd (arguably would have won anyway and forced by Griffen walking) to teams who then went on to win a flag, it's the smart trades for a player on the outer at there current side or the free agent since you give nothing up in return you want to go after. The hawks are the best example of this, they trageted free agents and players needing a 2nd chance. That or you draft a premiership team like the cats. You don't have to look far for the converse. Swans recently with Tippett and Buddy, Cats with Danger, Blues with Daisy and Judd, Pies with Adam Treloar, Taylor Adams, Tigers with Prestia, Lions with Fevola, us with Mitch Clarke, Hawks this year for O'meara. I'm sure there are many more but you get the point

After a game i sing the song ( well do win fairly often now ) and then go home. Celebrating consists of a couple of single malts and some reflection on life and football.
