  5. He is almost no. 1 as fan favourite I reckon. Everybody is on Jesse but it's sort of expected, the respect for Jonesy is huge, and everyone is excited about Oliver. But big Max! There's something about him that everyone wants to get around. He's got the beard, he's a bit crazy, he's hard at the ball, and he's had his run of bad luck with injuries over the years (hopefully done and dusted). If I could get my number on my Dee's top changed it would definitely become 11. Jimmy would be proud.

  6. We have had a full time liaison working at the club since Schwabs time. He also works for the State govt in the same capacity. we are definitely ahead of the pack in this area, as we are with the women's game. Nobody in China will want to visit Adelaide anyway. Don't panic.

  7. Melbournre: Lost at selection. The selection of Wagner, and I hold nothing against him, lost us the game in my opinion. Grimes would have been a far better selection. We were told at the beginning of the year that players wouldn't be gifted games and that consistent performances would be the only thing that would get you selected. Wagner is a rookie. He joined preseason training late because of the timing of the rookie draft and he played in all three of the NAB Cup game, as did Grimes. In the first two games he played 32% and 39% game time compared to Grimes 77% and 75%. He had 10 disposals combined in those games compared to Grimes 29. In the game against Saints Wagner played 68% for 14 disposals at 50% disposal efficiency. Grimes played 59% for 13 disposals at 92%. The stats are not definitive but they are indicative. Wagner hardly banged the door down and at best knocked very quietly. Grimes is fitter, bigger, stronger and much more AFL ready than Wagner and he performed better in preseason. The only attribute that Wagner is better than Grimes at the moment is his kicking skills but if you don't get it that doesn't matter. Wagner kicked it 3 times on Sunday. Grimes is not without his faults and I know many here use him as a whipping boy but whichever way you cut it he's a better player at the moment. If Grimes had been selected and played the game Wagner did on Sunday this site would be in meltdown over his performance. I like Wagner, he's tough but he's not AFL ready. On Saturday he came up against a forward line of Waite, Petrie, Brown, Thomas and Harvey. He didn't have the tools to play that game, he doesn't have the experience and for all he may end up being a good player he is not there yet. Wagner had 8 possessions on Sunday, 62% efficiency. He "did some nice things" but was far from AFL ready. It was a terrible selection. Grimes papers may be marked, he may not have a future but he is at this stage a significant upgrade on Wagner. Where is the "earning games" ethos? This kid hadn't earned them. The FD said one thing and did another. Just dumb. After all this time we should not be gifting players game to develop them, we should be putting our best team on the field to win the game. We didn't do that on Sunday and it's bitterly disappointing.

  9. You can see his Ruck patterns evolving as he goes along. It's all about unpredictability in those middle bounces( from my limited knowledge). But he is now mixing it up quite well, with jumping early, jumping late and sometimes not jumping at all. Also, along with the second efforts, there is now a lot of intent with responsibility.

  12. I'm concerned that it is so easy, after a narrow loss such as this, for recriminations to break out on this site. these usually relate to the last few minutes of a game. So, Watts is under fire for not kicking at goal. Dunn tried to stop a half volley with his foot. Bugg buggered up his kick to Stretch. RVB missed his easy shot. This ignores errors such as Vince's errant kick to Kennedy in Q1 which was marked by Firrito and led to a goal to NM .But, at other times,Tyson is said to have been useless notwithstanding his second quarter. The coaches must have got it all wrong, otherwise we must have been successful. No-one thinks of many remarkable errors made by NM. Errors were inevitable today. this game was played in remarkable conditions, yet it was one of the best matches I've seen since 1950 when I started supporting Melbourne. In wind such as we saw today a score of 8.18 to 6.16 would have been predictable, or a greater loss for Melbourne.. It was no match for we the supporters to be casting around looking for culprits. Melbourne played a first gamer plus third gamer against the most experienced team in the comp. They played on a ground they've never played before. And their best player Max Gawn gave the best display of knock ruck work I have ever seen in 60 plus years, against the player hitherto regarded as the best ruck in the league. Can anyone recall such direction of the ball to our runners? What about the 8m tap to Tyson in Q2 leading to a brilliant goal? We are plainly going somewhere and those thrashing around in anger are misguided. It wouldn't matter except that some of the comments are very hurtful, and may play a role in future list decisions

  15. Would not be playing Petracca until Round 8 or even Round 9. There is absolutely no need to rush him. Make sure he's right to go. We don't want his body breaking down again, because we've put him in too early. Watching that Casey 4th quarter (admittedly not a great sample size), but he didn't seem to me to work that hard defensively. Either he doesn't or he was knackered by that stage. Let him play two full games at VFL level and prove himself. He hasn't played a full game yet. Let's manage our players professionally this time, instead of debuting him for the sake of the impatience of fans. The defensive pressure has been passable for two weeks. I'd say it was very good against North and passable against GWS. But Kent didn't get to enough contests to apply pressure in Round 2.

  16. Agree entirely, this is what I see. He's developing into a tactical ruckmen with a lot of scope. The synergy he is developing with the midfielders is tracking fast. His improved strength is a big asset when jumping either late or not at all to combat other leaping ruckmen. He has definitely been worth waiting for in development when many here wanted to trade in ready made ruckmen at a cost. The shining light in his draft year for us.

  22. I gather he would have sent this around qtr time? He would have been framing up the week ahead, at the same time supporting his own argument about the Roos-Goodwin handover. Rest assured he'll put this on the back burner for another week, waiting for a performance to support his claims.

  23. We lost to Collingwood on QB last year because Roos made the mistake of putting McDonald on Cloke and he kicked 4 in the first quarter. Frost hasn't spent a second in defence at Melbourne, so now's not the time to try it. Dunn really has two perfect match ups in today's game - Hawkins and Cloke. Big lumps that Dunn has the body to wrestle with. He should not leave Cloke's side all day.

  34. I'd be surprised if he is picked and this is purely based on fitness. 3 quarters of one real McCoy game ( against a very poor team) doesn't mean he is ready fitness wise for an AFL game. I understand that they do play some players below full fitness but these are mature footballers with a few seasons under their belts and know how to pace themselves. Anywho - it will be the fitness team who ultimately have the final say.

  35. The application is now there in spades and he seems like he's got a good head on his shoulders. He is a massive cult figure and his form since working back into the seniors last year has been phenomenal. Lets hope he can keep it up, if he does he will be the premier ruckman in the comp in a couple of years.

  36. I reckon he's a chance to get picked. I know it would go against their stated timeline but i wonder if they might drop AVB and bring in the Trac. You can see he is a big stage player and would bring an x factor to the forward line. Playing him in VB's role as a permanent forward wouldn't expose any issues with his tank (though for Pete's sake he must be pretty fit by now surely) and how good would it be for the buzz at the club if he lit up the g against the old enemy and helped us snag a win. Particularly if he did so alongside Hogan and Oliver (and perhaps Brayshaw) in the team. It would make the ANZAC eve game a real blockbuster (imagine the pies and tigers in successive weeks - both clubs would go into meltdown! Oh my i'm getting way ahead of myself. It's that Pollyanna syndrome flaring up)

  38. DREAM START AT NIGHT by Ice Station The Casey Scorpions gave their coach Justin Plapp a dream start to the 2016 season with an emphatic 24-goal win over stand alone neighbour Frankston. Led out by new skipper Jack Hutchins, the Scorpions put a very strong team out on the field including 16 AFL listed players. They were expected to be far too strong for the struggling Dolphins who came out full of aggression but that withered early and the home side took advantage to the fullest by increasing their lead at every change despite being short on rotations as a result of three injuries early in the game. Jack Trengove's long-awaited return from a two year foot injury was put on hold early after he was concussed in the opening moments by a blow from the opposition skipper which earned him a two match suspension. Worse still was the injury to young ruckman Mitch King who suffered a second ACL injury in three years. Also off the ground by the main break was Jay Kennedy-Harris with a hamstring injury. Despite losing their ruckman and giving away a huge advantage in height, the Scorpions won the overall ruck duels thanks to the double teaming of Declan Keilty and Cam Pedersen which allowed the team to dominate the stoppages with Alex Neal-Bullen and Angus Brayshaw which, in turn produced plenty of scoring opportunities and a record score for Casey against Frankston. Tim Smith (5 goals) and Sam Weideman (4) were the major recipients. Boom recruit Christian Petracca who missed last year with a knee reconstruction made an excellent return to the game picking up over 30 touches and kicking two goals and three behinds. It was a good day from a Melbourne perspective with many young players standing out. Jayden Hunt was given a free rein to showcase his pace on the flanks, Oscar McDonald was outstanding in defence and rookies Joel Smith and Mitch White showed plenty of promise and great endeavour. The more mature players in Colin Garland, Viv Michie and Dean Terlich provided the steadiness needed to guide the youngsters even though the game resembled a practice match at times. The VFL listed contingent also had a very good night with Tim Smith, who missed much of the latter half of 2015, outstanding up forward and James Munro hard in the clinches and a prolific ball getter, as was the dangerous Angus Scott. Declan Keilty underlined his promise in the ruck and around the ground capping the night off with three goals and the skipper was solid when required down back on a night where defenders had things easy due to the poor opposition. Youngster Connor Ambler, as 23rd player, also got into the action and did some nice things and finished with a goal on his debut. Despite the percentage boosting start it's hard to take away too much from the one sided start to the season and Saturday's curtain raiser against Collingwood (albeit across the road from the MCG) will be a much better test for the flying Scorpions. 40. Frost is a natural attacking defender. Tall, strong and lightning fast. If we lose sight of his real strengths and relegate him to VFL as a failed forward it would be a huge shame. I know H was explosive on the weekend, but he is too small to play on the taller breed of forward. Frost is a defensive weapon we must deploy sooner rather than later.

  42. ANB not getting a game has nothing to do with his draft position. But I think your comment does. If we can develop his skills, poise and tackling I think he could be the perfect foil to the likes of Oliver, Petracca, Brayshaw etc. All explosive players who need to build their fitness bases. ANB could use his endurance and determination to compliment them. West Coast had a similar set up with Rowan Jones, who was Chris Judd's most trusted team mate and his defensive work covered for Judd, Cousins and Kerr.

  45. The charge is that he struck him in the neck. Silly thing to do raising the elbow. Also unnecessary. However, if you wanted to run an appeal, I would show the Merrett forearm hit on Pederson, as Pedersen was marking the ball, which sent him from the field bleeding with a broken nose. That was deemed not sufficient force to rub out Merrett. No breaks, or blood on MacMillan. Also didn't leave the field. All that said, I don't see us appealing.
