I sat right behind the bench this game and it game me an interesting perspective. First of all, the players were aware of how long was left in the quarter at all times. Obviously a massive focus this week and hilariously still yelling "1 minute left" when we were 4 goals up in the last quarter which prompted a geelong supporter to yell out at Millsy "relax, you've got this." Secondly you realise how important and Vocal Jones and Watts are even off the field. Both players dont sit down on their breaks, preferring to stand up and coach/encourage on the sidelines. Watts doesn't shut up on the boundary. Great to see. And lastly i was really impressed with how composed and relaxed they all were off the field. They really seemed quietly confident that it was their day. So great being in Geelong for this massive win for the club. You could hear a pin drop when walking out of the ground. No one in the stadium including the geelong players rated us any chance, and it was just a massive middle finger up at them performing the way we did. Great Great win.20 points

Definitely my favourite win since the 2000 prelim or that final where a young McLean won the game in the last. It wasn't just the win but the way in which it occurred. Everyone played for each other and there was a sense of desperation amongst all our players that I can't recall ever seeing before. We did it with quite a young and experienced team and it just feels so different to all of our 'false dawns' of the past decade. I feel the need to highlight some particular player efforts. Vince for completely changing the way in which he plays, he was a good player at adelaide even very good for one season but was never a desperate player and often went through the motions. Has turned into a contested and physical beast while still maintaining his polished skills. Jones deserved that win more than anyone else out there. You could see how much it meant to him after the game and the respect that the entire playing group has for him. Him and the next bloke both appeared very emotional after the game. Watts has turned a corner in the last 3 weeks. I wouldn't classify them as his 3 best individual games but certainly his most promising. Has come back into the team and while not by any stretch a contested player he is beginning to go when it is his turn and show more physicality. In the last few weeks he has finally decided to show some more of that pace that everybody knew he had. Took players on with his speed through the middle and wasn't afraid to make mistakes. Viney has been brilliant when not injured this year. We really missed him when he was out. Has been consistently good all year and is really growing as a player. He played Selwood 1 on 1 without help as Roos and his teammates trusted him to complete the job. Absolutely killed Selwood, who aside from maybe 2-3 touches had no influence on the contest. Gawn played his best game by far and showed more intent than I have seen before. He won't play like that every week but he now knows if he jumps and extends the arms that he will out mark almost anyone. Also gives our midfielders great drive, particular from the centre square. Stretch and ANB showed great sings for players with very little experience. They are both a long way from being physically developed but added a touch of class. Great coaching leaving these 2 in after last week and a win like that would do wonders for their confidence and hopefully fast track their development. Finally, Angus Brayshaw. We as demons supporters have spoken for year about the need to recruit or trade in a midfield gem. When we drafted him I just wanted to see him play 10-15 games and find his feet at this level in his first year. He came in straight away and showed physicality and courage well beyond his years. I would have settled for that alone as a first year player. Instead he has gone on to pretty much improve every game and show he has good speed, poise and skills for such a young player. Almost everything he touches turns to gold and he doesn't appear to have any weaknesses in his game. I'm very, very confident he is the elite gun in the middle that we have been desperate for all these years. Jones and Vince are playing out of their skin but I think Brayshaw will be a different type altogether. Absolute future captain material and his relationship with Jones is great for growing the culture of our club. Bit of a long winded post I know but wins like that don't come around very often and the intent and resulting elation on the players faces after the game are the reason we are all football fans. We will make mistakes we are still young but it's the sense of purpose that must remain. The way the players are speaking of the team and one another shows that we may finally be getting on the same page. Exciting times ahead!13 points

What about his post match interview when asked about when it started to get nasty with Selwood -"I love that [censored]". Put that on a t-shirt.11 points

Had to settle for watching a replay late tonight as I didn't get a chance to watch it live. Not knowing the score...well. A few observations Watts is now a footy player, so cool under pressure and gives off beautifully. I think Macca has really started to make a difference here, I love that Watts will now hold the ball and take the tackle and he is starting to lock down some good tackles. As I said last week ANB's first couple of VFL games saw him 2 touching, missing targets and not positioning well but in the next few he got the hang of it. Last week he struggled with the step up to AFL but this week he steadied and will be even better from here on. The kid can play. Dom was back, and it made a big difference. With Jones, Tyson, Viney, Brayshaw and Vince we had a midfield. Thought Stretch was pretty good today. Brayshaw is a gun, if Petracca is the equal or better then with Hogan we are looking at some good times ahead. I didn't think the Cats would trouble the top teams this year and they have some key injuries as do we. Take the win and look at where we've come from. We still have a long way to go but at least we're finally on the path.11 points

Still buzzing this morning after making the trip down as usual. And to think I almost thought twice about it this year given the exhorbitant prices they charge for crappy seats down there..... I thought this was our best 'team' effort, as the cliche goes, for a long time. Nary a poor player to be seen, everyone was up for this one today. Even perennial whipping boys did their job: Matt Jones- was given the job similar to he did on Bob Murphy to quell the milestone man, who was BOG for them against Port last week and he certainly did a good job on him Chris Dawes-From the moment he clunked that big contested mark on our wing, he was a very handy player today who was in lots of score involvements/goal assists, he really does bring out other forwards into the game Jack Watts-3 weeks of consistent footy now, he's really stepped his game up a notch, given the freedom to run a wing, he now seems to have a lot more time with the ball in hand, can run sideways to create space for himself, and is now willing to absorb a tackle to free up a teammate, his footy brain is the best on our list. Ruck Combo-"if Gawn doesnt get you, Spencer will!" proclaimed Sandy Roberts on the telecast (yes as soon as I came home I watched the replay). Not only was their ruckwork and marking around the ground a revelation, they'd also clearly been told that when the ball is bombed long into the forward line, do your best to bring it to ground for the smalls, they did this on several occasions, as did Howe and Dawes. The coaching battle was a big win for us. Viney quelling Selwood, Jones on Enright, Vince running with Blicavs, Dunn on Hawkins, Lumumba given license to run off Kersten to create and break lines. And the gameplan of kicking the ball long along the flanks to the big fellas, and then again long into the forward line for the talls to bring it down worked a treat, so often our goals game from quick long counter attacking footy that left massive gaps in their defensive structures. The Kids. Brayshaw gets better every week, his will and reading of the play is immense. J Brown and King were clearly enamoured by him in the comm box. ANBs workrate from the VFL started to translate as he gets a feel for the intensity at this level, 3 goals an unexpected bonus. Stretch looks comfortable, and not afraid to go in for it despite his lean stature. The sheer elation from the other smattering of demons fans in our area at the siren was fantastic, I was too nervous to say 'we're going to win' until about 2 minutes to go, lest Geelong got an expected run on.,until my Dad sitting next to me said it for me, we could then smile and enjoy the remaining time left. A truly great day out.9 points

I am still in total disbelief! I was at the game with a few of my old uni mates (who of course are Geelong members), when Hawkins kicked truly to give them a 1 point lead 2 minutes into the 3rd quarter, I got a tap on my shoulder from a Geelong supporter behind me and he pointed and said "Hotham is about 5 hours that way". I had much pleasure at the end of the game turning to him and saying, "I'm not sure if your GPS has updated yet, but look out for the end of the road". I must give credit though as after I told him that, all his mates laughed and they all said congratulations on a great win. What a great weekend it is when the mighty Dees win, and win well.9 points

Dwayne is hard to listen to at the best of times, his love of Port Adelaide and Geelong is equal only to his hatred of Melbourne. Today, you could hear the tears rolling down his cheeks, and the croak in his voice with every Melbourne goal got louder and louder. After Garlett kicked one of his many goals he proclaimed "dagger to the heart!" He was of course referring to himself. Well Dwayne, to show there are no hard feelings despite all this I will be sending you a small gift in the mail.8 points

I took this one, didnt get the rest of the scoreboard on there for perspective, but I wasnt the only one of the very few Dees supporters around us that took a similar snap!8 points

There were 6 players sitting behind us all day and when we got well in front during the last quarter i turned around and said "well that gets rid of 186",got smiles from the players as they rushed down to the concourse to be part of the win. It seemed that a new dawn had arrived for the playing list, and was beautiful to see.8 points

His rate of improvement is like nothing I have seen at this club. I said it in another thread but I'll say it again he has no weakness to his game. First few games I thought brilliant, he is a kid who is as tough as they come and brilliant defensively but could use some composure with the ball in hand, something that will come in the next year or 2. Then in the collingwood game he showed that he had that composure and balance with the ball and was instrumental in setting up our forward thrusts and assisting goals. Then in the last couple of games he had showed that he has breakaway pace and is a daring player. He just keeps showing more and more with every game he plays. The sort of player that is just so easy to coach. Selfless, tough, athletic, skilled, good in close and in space. Great defensively yet also a weapon with ball in hand. That play where he intercepted that Selwood kick was amazing. He could have gone back on the mark and looked for a target and played it safe but decided he had the pace to burn through the middle take a bounce and set up Spence for a goal. What sort of 10 gamer has the confidence let alone the ability to do that? I don't usually like making big sweeping statements but I will for Gus, he will be our best mid since Flower played for the Dees. Despite Jones' consistent performances the last few years, Gus has more weapons in his arsenal to dominate. Actually that's not even a big call, I think most see this in him now.7 points

The question I am now contemplating is whether this is THE game. The one to look back upon as when the rise started in earnest. I know many believe that has already happened, and that is true in that the wheel has already turned from the debacle we once were. But in terms of genuinely going into each game and believing we can win, was this the one? I thought GC in Round 1 might've been it, until it was revealed that GC were a trainwreck themselves. I reckon this is a big win in more ways than one, I'll say that much.7 points

I am genuinely thrilled for Jack Watts. He finally looks as though he belongs and has found his position. He had the best smile at the end of the game - I think he genuinely loves the Dees.7 points

Just so grateful we got Brayshaw. It would have been just too painful to see another Wines slip by us. i am simply astounded at the way he has played this year. a first year player who plays with such intensity, dash and footy smarts. We don't have to worry about whether he will develop over the next few years. He has already arrived. Everything seems to come so naturally. A future star and leader is in our midst.6 points

Will be an interesting prospect coming into the game after the bye as no player deserves to be dropped. Whilst Riley as the sub didn't get much of the ball he continually dug in and each 3 of his possessions were score involvements which is pretty impressive. JKH and Fitzy played well in the VFL, Hogan definitely will not be playing VFL and the "obvious" changes that people would have thought performed more than adequately. What this week highlighted: Chris Dawes is actually a much more important player than people who label him "concrete hands" will have anyone believe. His ability to fight for the ground ball, compete in the air, lead on the ground but also create space through correct leading patterns is vital for the function of our forward half. Angus Brayshaw is going to be a superstar and Stretch and ANB do not look too shabby either. Midfield accountability goes along way to getting the job done. Max Gawn will be first choice ruckman for the next 10 years, providing he can keep injury free, would love to see him get a few summers under his belt. Melbourne are most definitely on the up, despite people saying that our loss from last week has shown how little the club has improved, we have the makings of a top 4 team in 3-5 years6 points

And the good news is that Jack is not alone in "loving that [censored]". We were as hard as them today and weren't intimidated when they tried to rough us up in the third term. Watching the Stretch/Neal-Bullen interview and there is a whole group of younger players in this Club who don't carry any scars and believe in the process. They won't be easily swayed. Then there is the likes of Hogan and Brayshaw who, to be honest, I'm probably most excited about since the arrival of Scwarz and Neitz. We will make the 8 next year6 points

Hey Clint Lovely of you to give him his own thread. Utter moron, most annoying commentator around. As others said, his trouble is he just doesn't realise how stupid he is. He was one of the chorus leaders at the time of the tanking debacle. And the name. Is there a worse male name? It's like his parents had a discussion along the lines of: hmmm, this is a really dumb looking baby. What's the most appropriate name we can give it? How about Wayne? No, that doesn't capture the sublime stupidity of this baby. I know - let's stick a "der" in front of it. Late thought - sorry if this sounds disrespectful to any Demonlanders called Dwayne. I'm sure you wear it well. I have a rather unfortunate First name myself.6 points

It angers me that there has been plenty of genuine stuff to dislike about Watts in the past without having to invent "possibilities" - the AFL website had the video up of that play and labelled it " second gamer saves Watts' blushes". He took one stop forward got called to play on and cool as you like - handballed it to a man in space. He could have absolutely stuffed it up - but he didn't. No blushes...no saves... For Christ's sake, they have got to stop this in depth examination of every little thing he does.5 points

This winning feeling is something else. I've done about double the work I'd normally get through on a Monday because I just feel better after yesterday's performance. I probably shouldn't let football affect me so much, but I can't help it.5 points

It is medium-high risk for very-high reward. The high reward is a fast break which only requires 3-4 players to push forward hard. And we can counter the risk because our players in the D50 know that when we torp, they need to hit defensive positions immediately and man up in case it rebounds back. It shouldn't be a surprise to our defenders. And the advantage is that of er do it once or twice each week, opposition will need to set up to defend it. And that means stretching their zones out further, rendering them less effective inside the D50. As long as we pick the right options with the kick ins, and don't just do it because we can it is a great change up that creates confusion and doubt because standard defensive plans need to change.5 points

Similar for me - I woke up this morning feeling like absolute crud - first day back at work after 3 weeks off and I have a wretched cold. Was about half an hour in to my day before I suddenly remembered what happened and started grinning again. Winning is the gift that keeps on giving!5 points

we still got 70+ tackles which is a good return the reason they got more was simply because we were first to the ball more often i'll take those stats any day5 points

A new day looks much brighter for us Demon tragics, at last! Gus Brayshaw, this kid is something(Harveyesque, saints, mould),gut runs, busts tackles, is so hungry for leather or man with leather, already a leader with that sorta mindset. As a team we are learning what it's all about, finally, last week was a lesson that really hurt the group as a whole, ANB heart thumping said a lot yesterday, 4 me anyway, hopefully 4 our MFC. A fantastic team effort I was only pessimistically hoping 4 prior to the bounce, I was a pleasure to b around....lol.....was by myself. Lotsa fist pumping an f...k u [censored]. Love all you Demons. Bring it on.......5 points

Viney played his best game ever today. Easily. But Vince was still better. And Jones was brilliant, having started off slowly (poor disposal efficiency early on). Then there's Brayshaw's game. My god. So excited by our midfield group at the moment. Imagine if Tyson really starts to find some form. Gawn makes such a difference to this group. Even Spencer too. In answer to the OP, I'd say Bernie is our most important player at the moment. He proved it today. The game is won in the midfield. Hogan is going to be the forward of his generation, but right now, Bernie is our best.5 points

The best win since an injury ravaged Demons won against the odds against West Coast at Subiaco in 1998. I've been rapt with Watts' last 3 weeks. He's been so composed in traffic and under pressure it's been stark and for me almost unbelievable. He's still made the odd mistake, but everyone does. It's just so wonderful for the whole week when your team wins. Well done all.5 points

Watching the replay. Who'd have thought I couldn't wait for it to come on I feel like some players are being coached really well to play to their strengths. Wattsy has been given permission to get caught with the ball, because they know he's hard to bring down because he's tall, he can get his hands clear, and because his disposal is genuinely clean. As a result our players are learning to know he'll stand up in a tackle and to run off him. Created goals today because of it. Consistency and playing together will always make a better team, and we are only at the start. So happy for the boys.5 points

About 10% of them left the stand i was in. But most stayed to applaud their champ off the ground. It wasn't as evident at the ground for me, but watching the replay before, Dunn's game was massive. I'd say just about his best game for the club. We didn't have any passengers today. Everyone played their role and we minimised the stupid little errors that had been creeping into our game over the last couple of weeks. That is the benchmark, Melbourne. That is the benchmark. You do that every week and we'll make the 8 next year.4 points

Always good for laugh. Dwayne Russell (born March 4, 1965) is a very ordinary former Australian rules footballer and currently an even more ordinary commentator of the sport. He played for the Port Adelaide Football Club in the SANFL, before crossing over to VFL club Geelong in 1987. He played 50 games for 51 goals until he was removed from the club in 1991 for trying to pass himself off as Gary Ablett's younger, better looking, but less talented brother at Geelong Nightclubs. Following his retirement he was meant to be the captain-coach of Colac- Coragulac for 1992. However, he appeared at only two training sessions, collecting the $30,000 dollars to undertake the role. On the eve of his first match, he quit his position when he discovered that the Colac-Coragulac Football Club had not installed a solarium in the team rooms, as per his persistent requests. The job later went to Michael Roberts, whom pundits had always considered to have a far greater tactical nous and grasp of the game than Russell in the Cheese and Milk Factory, Mister.
