  1. Jesse Hogan - the love child of Jesse Ventura and Hulk Hogan Born 12 February 1995, 193cm, 91kg and plays for Claremont Colts When Jack Watts came to Melbourne he weighed 82 kilos, but was 3 cm's taller. Joe Daniher is 201cm's and weighs 89 kilos. Jesse plays in the mould of Jonathan Browm, but has better pace. Jesse can play at CHF, CHB, or even have stints on the ball. You only have to look at the photo above to see the power in his legs and chest. This from WA's talent manager: "Jesse is a powerful key forward/defender in the mould of Jonathan Brown. He's good overhead and very explosive off the mark for his size. We almost considered playing him in our under-18s team as a 16-year-old. He'd be in the top two or three players in the WAFL colts competition." I love that not only is Hogan big, strong, aggressive, loves physical contact, is a great mark, but that he also has explosive pace for a big guy. That last asset will hold him in good stead at AFL level. Some people worry that a big player who dominates at underage level won't have the same advantages in the AFL, but if they have pace, courage in the air and love splitting packs they'll be a handful anywhere. Think of a more athletic Hurley, or a bigger Jack Darling. Hogan has grown 2 cm's in the last 12 months and I reckon will be 194 cm's by the time he debuts. 'Perth Now' have already listed him at 194 cm's in a recent article. He'll hold down CHF in the AFL for 10 years. Imagine Clark, Hogan and Howe as the cornerstone of your forward-line for at least 5 years. Can I wait 1 season for Hogan while we're still in development mode ? Silly question. I've been tracking Viney since he was 11 at Ashburton. I agree that we need mids, more mids and then mids, but with our great hand at this year's draft we can certainly accomplish most things if we get Viney in the second round. One of Toumpas, Mayes, O'Rourke, Wines, plus Viney, plus possibly a Kennedy, Garlett, Vlastuin, Simpson, Hrovat, or even Caddy at pick 13, not to mention picks in the third round +, means we can grab Hogan and still get quality midfield talent into the club. You build premiership teams around two dominant key forwards like Clark and Hogan. Add a much better Trengove, a fitter Blease up on a wing with Viney, Nathan Jones, and two of the names above and we'll make inroads quickly. Hogan is a must for me. In round 1, 2014 Hogan will be 19 and ready to go after a year developing with an AFL club. Matty Lloyd kicked 63 goals as a 19 year old. Jack Darling has played most of this year as a 19 year old and has kicked over 40 goals. Jonathan Brown kicked 38 goals from CHF as a 19 year old. Jesse Hogan doesn't have the same issues as Watts. In his first year at AFL level he'll have a bigger body than Watts will in his 6th year. Big, strong, powerful, courage, great mark, and pace. Melbourne have to get this done.

  2. Range Rover what gives you the right to criticise a person like Rubeboy? Do you have any idea whatsoever what that man has provided for Liam Jurrah and his family over a number of years? I cannot understand people on these forums with no knowledge whatsoever of the actual reality of other peoples lives making stupid statements and excusing them by saying 'it's my opinion!' As has been stated on here before by people close to Liam, Bruce (Rudeboy) has been integral to Liam making it into the AFL system. With regards to the book and it's significance, it is a celebration of one mans journey in life and where he has come from and how far he has traveled. Liams story is not purely a football story. From game none to one carries more weight than from here on in and any dispute of that fact flys in the face of the issues and realities facing indigenous people from the region where Liam is from.

  3. Hey all, i'm an American footy fan, and last year, I decided to support the Demons. Partially because I am a fan of Hamish and Andy, and heard Hamish was a Dees supporter, but more so, because of the rich history of the club, Jim Stynes, and a few players I really liked. I was so pumped to watch my first game as a Dees fan, I woke up at 3 AM to watch Melbourne get thumped by West Coast, haha not a very good start to me being a Demons fan. So at the time I became a fan, I sent an email to the Demons, asking a question about something related to the club. Anyway, I never heard back from them, till earlier this month. I got an email back from a representative of the club, who thanked me for my support of the club, and said that to make up for a slow reply, they sent me this. Got here today, and I'm way excited. It made me love the club even more. I honestly didn't even expect to hear back from them, let alone have them offer to send me something. Sorry if this post was kind of stupid, I just wanted to share my excitement with someone, and i'm the only AFL fan I know in my state haha.

  4. Nicholson. Just needs to 'clean up' a few elements of his game and he'll be great for us.

  5. Twelve years ago, the Demons thrashed the Roos to make our first Grand Final in 13 years. In some ways it feels a lifetime ago, in others it doesn't seem so far in the past. It was such an exciting feeling leaving the ground that night - Farmer's 8 and Powell's 33 and 4 goals the main highlights. A brilliant season with many highlights. What, aside from the obvious, are people's highlights from 2000?

  9. This is why a new coach has to have at least a couple of years before judgements are made. A new game plan requires a different type of preparation, and to some extent, a different type of player. A concentration on contested footy (as opposed to the more open footy of Bailey) requires a higher level of endurance, which can easily produce lower quality disposal and a higher rate of injury in those who are not suited. Until Neeld assembles the squad he wants, and gives them a couple of preseasons, we won't know what he, and his team, is capable of.

  10. Hate and despise it more than anything else in the game except $cully. I want our list of available players to either be playing seniors or reserves - not 30 minutes of one game after which half the time they're dropped for failing to make adequate impact in the middle of the match. These are highly paid professionals and I couldn't give a continental what wonky, rigged stats the league bring out about injuries I want to see them play, not wander up and down the sidelines in a vest and ride exercise bikes. If they want to stamp their legacy on the game and change things for the sake of it (and my god do they enjoy doing that) then I'd rather it be three on the bench with no sub. At least then you know the players who have been named will get a fair run at it. Worst justification for mine is how it's great for teams who have early injuries. Tough luck if you have an injury! It's a game of variables with a rigged draw and a ball that is designed to go any which way at any given time. Especially with four on the bench if you're a good team you won't be put away by losing one guy, and a bit of luck here and there for rubbish teams makes the game more interesting. No chance for a change while rotten politicians like Demetriou are in charge though.

  11. Footy is an emotional game, even more so if you're a Dees supporter this year. So with that in mind, and in keeping with the recent trends on 'Land for manufacturing some positivity and looking at our list (a lot), I thought it might be a good time to reflect on who has won you over during the year. Might be a player you previously didn't rate, might be one who stood up, might even be an administrator or coach, but before we all get obsessed with the trade and draft period (although most of us have been since about May) let's get into a bit of a "love in" (thanks Mick)... For me: Clark - Was dubious about how successful a move it would be getting him, but is now probably my favourite player Jonesy - Always loved this guy since day dot, but what a fantastic season Grimesy - Finally put together a full season, and I've been massively impressed by his leadership Blease - The spark plug! Didn't expect him to be SO quick, or kick 5 goals in a game Riv - I was one of many who thought his time was coming to an end, but before being moved forward he would have been tracking not far behind Jonesy for the Bluey, and has done better than expected in the unfamiliar role up forward McLardy - didn't know a heck of a lot about him before this year, but I've been really impressed with his level head, passion, and intelligence And of course, there's been the birth of a star - Howie! I know this thread might not be a lot of 'Landers cup of tea, and some may try and turn it into bashing players who have done the opposite of impress, but let's acknowledge the blokes who have turned it around, as they're the ones that will lift the club.

  12. I don't know why some flogs get concerned by where 'some' recruiters rate a player. Fyfe was pick 20, but where would you have him now ? Beams was pick 29, but where would you have him now ? Hannebery was in the 30's, but where would you have him now ? Redden was in the 30's, but where would you have him now ? Shuey was 19, but where would you have him now ? Yet dickwads argue over whether Viney is 6-10, or 5-15; and if he falls outside our range whether we'll say bye ? You're delusional. Viney will be at Melbourne next year no matter what pick we have to take him. And he's worth it. The guy is a leader, he's as manic as Joel Selwood, he hits targets, and despite the views of some fools he's quick. We're lucky he's ours - even if you don't recognise it. Our first decent F/S since Barassi and supporters are happy to let him go. FM.

  14. This year's draft was previously overhyped and people are starting to realise it's not a superdraft and not to dissimilar to drafts of recent years. Also your point on 3 or 4 other viney's is ludicrous, I would dare to say there is not one player in the draft similar to the way he plays and if there is they are certainly not up to his standard. Viney would be step 1 to changing the lackadaisical culture amongst many of the players.

  15. No thanks. Prefer to give someone a chance who relishes the opportunity to play AFL football. Committed, competitive animals only from here on in.

  16. Tom McDonald for me. I remember back to our first game against St Kilda this year when McDonald was matched up against Nick Riewoldt. Riewoldt towelled him up for the first 10 minutes of the game, and if you'll look at the match day thread, you'll probably see me making a number of wise statements along the lines of "I have no idea how McDonald gets a game." Cut to the the Player of the Year votes after the game, and I think he featured in my top three. Fair to say McDonald has certainly won me over this year.

  23. Thanks for the details, he is such an enigma as a player. He can kick goals out his khyber but just doesn't seem to suit the modern game. Who knows he may still kick 50 goals in a season but is a massive massive gamble and liability. Hilarious isn't it, he's a spud yet has 45 goals (9th in comp), 1st in contested marks, 5th in marks inside the F50.... Dees are crying out for another one of those players.

  25. Family has always come ahead of his football for Liam which is common among most indigenous footballers; the fact is he is not able to return home where his family is for legal reasons. The club have given him time off to visit his family in Adelaide while his body heals up after a terrible run of injuries. The club knows that the evidence given by several witnesses during his court hearing conflict with one another. As this is the case the charges against Liam are flimsy at best. There is no full proof evidence to show him being delisted by us in the near future. The club knows it is in a good position with him otherwise they would have torn up his contract when initial allegations were made. The truth is he's had a horror year on the field and off it, all we can hope for is that by late March next year it is all behind him and his pre-season has been dominant.

  27. If, as I have been told, he was behind the rapid rise of Pendlebury, then hopefully we'll see the same with the Gys. A full pre-season and an injury free run will tell us a lot.

  28. The next best thing after a Demons win is an Essendon loss and this mob have capitulated in fine style after being touted as a flag fancy earlier in the season. Anyone who has mates who bang on and on about Hiiiiiiiirdy and Bombaaaaa will know what I'm talking about. Go to Bomberblitz and follow the meltdown live. It's a guilty pleasure.

  29. Not sure on Wonna. Loved the theatrics. Was never fit enough for Bailey's game plan. He is a mile off Neeld's demands. He'll need at least 2 pre seasons to get in shape. He is coming from a long way back. No harm in trying again. I reckon he will struggle for a rookie spot...anywhere

  30. The old school members who were around during the 60s think we have a rivalry with Collingwood, but they couldn't give a toss about us: they're a big club and these days we are a little one. It had meaning 50 years ago when we would routinely meet them in finals, but these days it's less of a rivalry and more of a case of tall poppy syndrome.

  32. Welcome AD. Lived in NY for a couple of years in the '70's. Have followed the Dees for 60 years and, unlike most here, have actually seen them win 4 flags. Hang tough 'cause I think we're on the road to glory once again - they've got to win one more before I croak.

  33. Spot on. Also i reckon these 3 players represent what Neeld is after. Hard working, gut busters who are prepared to take on board advice and are looking to improve. He has taken every opportunity to pump these boys up. Instructive that Nicholson is straight back into the side this week after a few weeks out with a broken jaw. Neeld is making a statement on what will earn a spot in his teams. Talent isn't the key criteria - work ethic is. Which is why Sellar and MacDonald are walk up starts. King Cutherbston i also reckon you're spot on about McDonald. Yes his disposal is sometimes not great but he has clearly been encouraged to go for it and take risks. For a young fella he shows an amazing confidence in his own ability and i love his preparedness to take the game on and run and carry. He has cemented his spot and is one of the first picked. Not one Demonlander would argue with that - which was not the case at the beginning of the year. Think of the players he has been asked to mark this year - arguably he has been a more influential defender than Frawley (an AA no less) For my money his development is the biggest positive for the dees this year and Neeld should get cudos for his role in that development

  37. Thats what I assumed, just double checking! It's funny since I started learning about the AFL i've found ever team has stereotypes. Western Bulldogs-scrappy team, bad luck Richmond-what we could call over here, white trash. North Melb-no one seems to know enough supporters to figure out what they are. Collingwood- Inbred. I feel like i've learned a lot haha

  38. If Neeld is all about actions and behaviours, elite compliance and elite work ethic, then I'm really sorry to say it but Liam fails miserably. The club needs to continue with their support during this trial but to factor Liam into next years football team would be foolish and unprofessional. I think we all know that Neeld is of no such dispositions.

  39. Yes, but when he goes home without telling the club. That could be a difficult job. Liam's head is elsewhere, and i am not blaming him. It just is.

  43. The off field football stuff he is dealing with is broader than just his family. It involves his community. He walked out on the Club for the rest of this year. Its ambitious to think a tough pre season is what he needs to address this. Red and blue goggles working overtime. Who knows when his community issues will be resolved? I doubt it will be before the court case where the warring factions will face the judge. At best he is a rookie but hopefully the Club knows the better options.
