From MELBOURNEfc:

"MELBOURNEfc’s Brock McLean has been suspended from the Leadership Group indefinitely after being booked for travelling over the speed limit on his way back from Melbourne’s NAB Challenge match in Bendigo.

General Manager of Football Operations Chris Connolly said, "This is very disappointing for Brock. He is a highly valued member of the Club, and his training form has been excellent in 2008. He is seen by the match committee to have outstanding leadership qualities, however this behaviour was deemed by his peers to be unacceptable."

Brock McLean will, however, be eligible for selection for this week’s NAB Challenge match against North Melbourne at Casey Fields.

The Club will be making no further comment on this matter"

I am genuinely feeling sorry for Dean Bailey.

The season hasnt started yet and he cant win a trick.

I wonder if he is giving direction to the leadership group?

Im glad that we now have a no-nonsense approach that has unfortunately made Brock a three time loser.

I saw it on the news, and when they said he was 'in trouble' I thought he was horribly injured.... so phew. :D

Silly thing to do on top of everything else.

Maybe what he really needed is this reality check to make him understand that he can be a great player, but that does not make him invincible.

I think we all expect more from him, and now is the time to show us what he is made of. I'll watch with interest his next move.

Very pleased to see how well Bailey has handled everything since he has arrived at the club. He obviously feels no obligation to anyone, and good on him.

You are kidding, right ?

No. Although I do understand how some can view it as part of master plan.

Supporters get so excited about nothing. It's not preferred, but it's hardly a big deal.

In fact, I think I've been caught speeding a couple of times myself.

I agree with this........

But I am awfully disappointed in McLean. He should know better than to do this kind of [censored]......again.

This niggly stuff is getting ridiculous, and hopefully he learns (this time) and realises that this crap will not be tolerated any more.

Does anybody know the speed he was doing? If its only a few k's over then IMO this an extreme overreaction.

I don't understand why footballers are held to such a ridiculously high standard, whilst important people with huge responsibility, eg pollies, doctors, lawyers etc aren't subject to anywher near this level of scrutiny.

Rolemodels I hear you all shout. That is simply bad parenting. Maybe as parents you could try to set an example yourself. Too hard, let the telly do it.

This is getting ridiculous. If McLean's actions don't affect his ability to play football or harm any existing club sponsorship, how has his behaviour in this instance been deemed unacceptable? If the club applies the same guidelines to on-field behaviour, by round 5 we won't have a leadership group. This is how it will pan out:

Round 1 - Yze fails to man up, chase, or tackle - Suspended

Round 2 - Robertson continually flies for hangers - Suspended

Round 3 - Miller continually handballs to a teammate standing next to his opponent - Suspended

Round 4 - Bruce turns the ball over with 50% of his kicks - Suspended

Round 5 - Neitz to face the tribunal for charging - Suspended

The speeding is probably a very minor offense in the big scheme of things (mind you, I don't know how quickly he was driving), but when you have a couple of other incidents hanging over your head, all you need it one tiny straw to break the camel's back.

I support Bailey and his approach to discipline. Yes, it might seem harsh, but someone has to pay the price in order for the whole team to understand clearly what is expected of them. If you give them an inch, they'll want to take the whole mile.

Having said that, may this be the most serious incident McLean ever finds himself in!

This niggly stuff is getting ridiculous,

Niggling was the word i was thinking of too.

Always had niggling injuries (soft tissue), now his got niggling off field issues. Nothing massive but its getting annoying.

I don't think he's a player that needs a light up his arse to get going but his got one anyway.

Show us you want to lead.

Pretty disappointed to be honest, he's a heck of a footballer who has received more than one warning about pulling his head in. How many more does he need?

There's what, 670 AFL players? 655 of them get through a year without speeding fines or drink driving or anything like that. These sort of repeated indiscretions (minor or major, however you see it) are the sort of stuff that got Steve Johnson bannished to the VFL for 6 weeks.

Maybe it wouldn't have been the worst thing to suspend him for a few weeks to hammer it home.

The 2008 version of Steve Johnson. I'll take the speeding ticket and the premiership flag. Nice guys run last.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
