Unless they are also paying him $90 a season, he is not free!

I mean free in terms of what they paid Geelong. Obviously I did not mean completely free.

So I ask again, why get him unless you think you're in a premiership window?

He has 1-2 years left.

The Saints clearly feel that they are one ruckman short of a premiership, which is why they targeted an older, developed ruckman over a young kid like Woods or Meesen. Fair enough too.

It's amazing just how quickly things change in footy. Halfway through the year I heard Luke Ball say he thought StKilda's list had been vastly overrated in previous years, and yet here they are, trading as if they are on the verge of glory. I would love to know whats really changed in 3 months.

The same reason they have recruited Knobel, Ackland, Clarke and Gardiner before him, I suppose. Either because they like seasoned ruckman, or they just like picking up washed up old rucks with no knees (in the case of the latter three) or talent (in the case of the former two). I don't think they're any more- or less- in a premiership window than they have been in previous years.

They are more than that.

Clarke is just about gone. Gardiner is chronically injured and Blake is not good enough. And they want to play Kozi forward too.

Its could be a win win if Geelong have something else they want to do with No 90.

Charlie Gardiner I dont rate. Placings in the VFL B & F are like a fourth in the fifth in midweek Benalla.

Geelong have just ruined their great year by their trading...

i disagree, i think they've got something in return for players they would have otherwise simply delisted, callan, playfair, gardiner, king. they might not have got much, but it is more than nothing. we are yet to see their intentions for these actions i think

the last team that did a massive trade ended up being a big mistake

Carlton 2003

David A Clarke?

Daniel Harford

9 games

brett johnson 32 games

cory macgrath 50 games

digby morrell 32 games

heath scotland 85*current

david teague 50 games

glen bowyer 20 games

ricky mott 2 games

only a few bright lights there

St Kilda just want someone to play ruck so that Kosi doesn't get killed by having to play in the ruck with his fragile body.

Not sure you can ruin a premiership year by trading players who didn't play any significant part in the premiership (except King who would have left anyway). Actually not sure you can ruin a premiership year at all....

I suspect Geelong wanted to get rid of Gardiner (possibly still under contract) and this was a mechanism to delist him without actually delisting him. St Kilda get the ruckman they want, Geelong get rid of a contracted player they didn't want - win/win.

The Saints have had a massive trade week. Kudos to them for their coups - bigger than Judd!

How do they do it?

Expect several delistings from Saints.

i'm actually surprised geelong didnt make a play for a wood or like player. that second ruck was obviously the position of contention this season...blake is probably not good enough, king is too old, and they want ottens up forward. i thought geelongs first rounder for wood would have been a decent offer that would have strengthened their team for a few years...

im happy they didnt though because we may have got 17 for TJ lol

Geelong would've delisted Gardiner and retired King.

Geelongs just wanted to find them new homes cause they're 'good blokes'.

Michael Gardiner is chronically injured.

Charlie Gardner is Geelong's Ferg who dominates at VFL and struggles at AFL level.

Gee thanks goose it good they get rid of players they rate. Pity they dont pick them in their team regularly.

They squeezed King for No 90 for salary cap reasons

mate u got no idea... go look at chucks stats when he has played afl..... go on and let me know if u think hes better than pik 90...

ur a battler champ!!!

Goose, pick 90 will be used for Adam Donahoe as their father/son.

Charlie Gardner is a one-dimensional footballer. A half-forward who's not a prolific goalkicker, and is incapable of being a midfielder.

I dont have to. I have seen him play and like Geelong I dont believe he is best 22 and is a limited footballer. For what Geelong had to do to their salary cap and list, I think it is was sensible to dispense with a NQR player.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session. Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
