But you should never believe what you read in the newspapers as gospel. WCE's recruiting manager Trevor Woodhouse was on radio in Perth last night and according to a Tiger fan on PRE he had this to say about Cotchin:

# His dad was "misrepresented" in the article. Woodhouse spent 1.5 hours with the Cotchin family last week and there was no mention of concerns with the culture at West Coast. However, the normal reaction for parents is to want their kids to stay in their home state. Age journalist Emma Quayle is writing a book on the draft this year and sat in on the interview with Cotchin's dad. Woodhouse made no mention of recruiting Cale Morton and reading between the lines they rate Kreuzer and Cotchin 1 and 2. Based on what he was saying, WCE have a top 2 (Kreuzer and Cotchin) which is why pick 3 is not going to be enough.

On the Draft Camp he said:

# It's a tough week for the young kids with the spotlight thrust on them.

# He indicated the results of the draft camp testing rarely influence his decisions. Mostly on what he has seen on the field and type of person they are.

# Kreuzer is in the top 2 of the draft. His endurance is outstanding for a ruckman.

# Morton got 15.2 on the beep and Palmer 14.6 which was a little below expectations

On Chris Judd he said:

# If he was in the draft this year then he would go # 1 by the length of the Flemington Straight; hence he is worth the # 1 pick plus another very early pick. Anything less they will view as not reasonable compensation.

# Expects some twists in the trade before the end of trade week.

# Richmond have pick # 1 in PSD and hence is a chance to get him. Of course that would mean WCE get nothing for him.

# He discussed Josh Kennedy and indicated that just because he went # 4 a couple of years ago does not mean he is representative of an early draft pick now. All clubs have had early picks that did not develop as expected. In other words, they don't rate him at all.

# Carlton are "mucking around" and have not put anything on the table as yet though picks 3 and 20 are floating around.

Don't think they are particularly fond of each other already and it sounds like this one is going to go to 1.55pm on the last day.

But you never know but a bold move by another club with early draft choices might achieve something ...

Thanks DA very informative.

Personally I think the truth is somewhere in the middle. I don't think Mr Cotchin wants his son to go West, I think that undoubtedly the Eagles culture is a big factor in that, but I think in the end that he will just have to accept that the way the draft works means that he will have to accept the situation. Maybe Mr Cotchin didn't feel comfortable discussing the Eagle's dirty laundry face to face with a club official, or maybe Woodhouse did a snake oil spin and allayed any fears, either way it's immaterial, Trent will be drafted and he'll got to whoever he's drafted to, because that's how the system works.

It'd be fascinating to see what the Eagles did if they had pick one. Cotchin or Kreuzer?

Has any player just plain refused to go to the club that called their name?? I gather they wouldnt be allowed to just get away with it but wonder what would happen if Cotchin refused to go play in the west....make for an interesting scenario.

Doubt we will get him tho.. I suspect Palmer and I like the sound of him. He is my tip for our #4.

No. He can however just sign a one year deal and state he'll go in the PSD next year and Weagles will get nothing for their #3 pick.

Brett Chalmers refused to go to Collingwood in the early 90's. Got fined for draft tampering.

This might seem like a silly question but does the draftee's age come into it at all?

I mean if he is 17, as opposed to being 18 when he is deemed an adult.

Just curious :) !!!

I think the minimum period is 2 years.

Yeah Tim Watson was drafted by the WC Eagles and didn't go. That was the PSD of course, dunno if its ever happened in the National Draft though.

Im bloody excited by the prospect of nabbing Cotchin at pick 4. would be a bigger steal than Franklin at pick 5 a couple of years ago...

here's why Cothchin is coming to MFC:

- Carlton are certain to use pick 1 on Kruiser.

- Richmond look more and more certain to use pick 2 on Cale Morton. Greg Miller openly expressed interest in his Brother, Mitch Morton, who they will almost certainly trade for, or otherwize pick up pick1 in the psd. Also, Cale Morton has done his chances no harm with an excellent draft camp, gunning the beep test and skill sessions.

- West Coast are almost certain to have pick3. they have expressed a desire to pick up Western Australian talent. this year there is plenty top 5 prospects who are WestAustralian. Rhys Palmer, Mastern and Alex Rance are 3 Perth boys who will be looked at for WestCoasts pick3. Adding to this speculation, is that Cotchin's father has admitted he doesnt want his son at WestCoast. With so many Western Australian equally deserving on their top pick, they seem certain to pick a homegrown boy...theyd prefer to not risk another Judd going home in 2 years.

- this these Cotchin (arguably the best player in the draft) to fall into our laps...!!!!

would be a massive coup for us. lightening quick, skillful midfielder. exactly what we need.

if this doesnt work out, Rhys Palmer is the go.

His draft camp results were also outstanding (beep test and 3km timetrial especially) doing his top 5 prospects no harm. McEnvoy would be the next option

100% agree with all of that, though I'm less optimistic Cotchin will slip through.

Cotchin is as good as a Demom

Trust me on this

There goes that idea...

:D

he is starting to become a bit of a kiss of death isnt he?

but only this year, since he always tips us and we lost every game lol

1.kruezer

2. Cotchin

3. Morton

its always been those 3 in that order..there is no reason why it would be anything else. they are the 3 standouts. unfortunately we have pick 4 because none of them will slide.

I really like the look of cotchin but getting my hopes up (just like judd) and not gaining him in the draft would suck really badly what other options do we have if we dont get him.

Palmer Palmer Palmer. Our midfield is screaming out for a player like him.

We have NO pace. Not a dicky bird. With pace comes clearances, running through the lines, and kicking running goals. Palmer is solid, quick, and skillful. I can tell you straight off that if you asked him, he would say he modelled his game on Chris Judd. You can just see it in the way he plays.

i feel we need a tall centre half back i think rivers should play on the back flank with bell and carrol should stay full back whelan can be in the back pocket but we need another back pocket player seeing as doggy retired and ward was delisted

yeah u are correct but take the best tallant availible. Palmer looks awsome. I rate him 2nd after Cotchin and we are not going to get cotchin so everyone stop getting ur hopes up. Its true that our defence is one of the worst in the AFL. When u name players like Holland, Ward, Biz, CJ, Carroll u are naming medioka players. Rivers is not a CHB but the ruck situation and FB are more pressing in my opinion. We also need another back pocket player who is tallish to take on the 2nd best forward for the oposition. Its my hope to one day not see Carroll run out there.

Haha yes, I'm a big Palmer fan. Having said that, though, as per the other thread, I would still take Cotchin before him. If Palmer is available at Pick 4, and Cotchin wasn't, I think we should have absolutely zero hesitation in snaring him. I would ACCEPT but be distinctly less pleased if we took any of Rance, McEvoy or Ebert though. I'm coming Ebert after reading something that Kevin Sheehan wrote in the Hun today... about him being the archetypal complete midfielder, or something to that effect. I don't know why that should be, as I happen to think Sheehan is a right tool (No pace means Brock McLean won't make it? Fail, Kevin), but there are plenty of others who rate the boy.

However, I reiterate my allegiance to the Palmer camp. I'm firmly in it, and my tent is pitched. Make of that what you will...

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
