Captaincy 2008

Brock 08

David Neitz said he will hand it over.

Brock is arguably too young and inexperianced.

Leaving aside the unlikely event of judd coming to this club, who is likely to succeed the big man?

James McDonald for one or two years?

-opinions?

Neitz said he might like a year without it, never said he was handing over, said if Bailey wanted him to do it he would.

Brock is not ready and is getting far to over rated.

Jmac is a chance but is perhaps just to old now.

Brad Green is the best bet.

Give it to Brad Green for 3 or so years. Is the perfect age and obviously has leadership capabilites.

I want Bruce, and I think it will be Bruce. But hard to know with a new coach.

I'm not a fan of this interm captain crap.

Interm means a stop gap until a real captain comes.

We need a fresh approach with a young captain who'll be 5 years + captain.

Let's take a real step forward instead of this [censored] "we'll take a little step forward in the first 2-3 years".

Neita will b our captain though. (not having a go at Neita)

lets just see who's in the actual list !! ;)

To me there is no such thing as "interim".......

If you are handed the captaincy then you are the captain. Full stop.

I understand and agree with the popular opinion that McLean could one day lead the side, but if he is not ready now then that is the way it is. Another player, be it Green, who to me is the best bet, or whoever is appointed. That's it. There's no room to make him have to second guess himself and it is certainly not fair.

And if he does a great job he hangs on to it. If not then we'll cross that bridge when necessary.

But the captain is the captain and should certainly not be some stop gap until someone who could be better may or may not come along.

I totally agree. People say that he doesn't have leadership qualities but i think that is a load of crab. Sure he had a poor year but when the club start to win games, you watch shine!!! He is going to be 28 next year so he probably has 3 or 4 years left in him and hopefully he can be captain 2008 onwards because i think he still has a lot to offer the club.

If Johnstone stays at the club I think he may get it in the hope that the more responsibility he has will make him focused on working harder.

Bruce or Junior could not be given the captaincy. You cannot have captains who can't kick. Junior is only an average kick and Bruce is poor to say the least.

I'd favour McLean despite his age and need to improve, he's a natural leader and could help with the sea change in attitude our club so desperately needs and what better time to make that change than with the arrival of a new coach. Green would be my second choice.

I'd say Green. Good age for a captain and has shown this year the two things most required of a captain - courage and skill.

Have changed since the start of the year, but I think it's a little bit too early for McLean.

Correct. Todd Viney was seen by some as an "interim" captain but he did a damn good job (and I think he was over 30 when he got it)!

It's Green or J.Mac for me. Both are worthy.

This is a tough one. I want McLean as captain, because he is clearly a born leader. However, he needs to get his football to the next level first. If he can get back to the sort of form he was in against St Kilda in the 06 finals, and showed at times this year, and maintain something like that level over the season, then he will show that he is ready.

So who should do it in the mean time? If we give it to Green, he'll be there for another 4-5 years, and as I don't think he is the leader that Brock is/will be, we'll be stuck with second option for at least a couple of seasons.

I think McDonald should be our man next season. He's hard, he's consistent, and he's always a contributor. He's likely got 2 seasons left in him, and by that stage McLean should have got his football going, his oft-volatile temperament controlled, and be ready to be Captain.

I'd rather kill myself with a spoon than have Bruce capain MFC.

You are delusional if you think Brock can't play football or if Bruce should be our next captain.

A bit harsh! I don't think Brock is ready to be captain as he had a shocking season (in part due to injury) and he really needs to concentrate on his football and getting his confidence back without any added pressure.

I am a vote for Brad Green.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
