CASEY: Rd 04 vs Brisbane Lions Reserves

Featured Replies

So our defenders do well across D50, half backs and mids move it well by hand and foot through the middle, only to then enter F50 with poor kicking. Turnover. Rinse and repeat.

Lions can't miss today.

Great mark and goal from Ah-Mu.

Cross with 5 tackles in a half

Get to the G son we need some fwd pressure!!

Our kicking and general forward craft inside 50 has been atrocious so far

onley under zero pressure again turns it over by foot and they were very lucky they missed another scoring opportunity, right on the 3/4 time siren

9.7.61 to 17.4.106

bonner with the most possessions but of the dees-listed players, amw and mcdonald have had a fair bit of the ball, but amw in particular has turned it over far too often

we have no midfield depth

Casey's lack of genuinely skilled players is showing. With all our injuries at AFL level, it feels like our lower 5 players in this Casey game are more suited to the top standard of suburban or country footy (EFL, BFL).

I can't question our work rate, but there is a massive gap in foot skills between the 2 teams. If we could actually hit up our forwards in good positions it would be a different game.

Adams and Onley looking a mile off in this game. AMW needs more Casey time. Great exposure for Kalani White.

8 minutes ago, whatwhat say what said:

We have only 2 quality mids in Steele and Kozzy and definitely need some new blood in the midfield.

That has to be our number 1 priority.

With alot of Mark / free kick situations today....

Not much initial / quick assessment of what's on up the field.

Instead, often a quick short HB to a stationery option close by. Which results in 'play on' being called and receiver under alot more pressure than the mark or free kick recipient would have been had he gone back and found a hit up or just kicked down the line (at worst gaining some territory).

I understand this happens in footy on occasions, even with the best. But i scratch my head when it happens to the extent we've seen today.

Like how are so many players arriving at this panicy impatient style of play that so often results in a turnover? Is it just inexperience / confidence? A bad day at the office for many? Are they being trained to play this way but just picking the wrong times / options?

Super frustrating to watch

No team can expect depth with you lose your top 3 midfielders in the offseason. Impossible to substitute this in one off season..

Thank goodness for Casey that Jefferson will be back in next week

We'll have an interesting dilemma if Humphrey becomes available and wants to come to us.

We clearly need one more strong draft but Gold Coast would want our two first picks at least.

The result in these matches doesn't really matter...but there is not a lot there you could see playing senior footy.

Mathews, AMW...

Luker looked a long way off today.

Future... White is very raw but he has something.

Tommy Mac is the go to when glass option also really the only senior player in the team today.

Injury has impacted a team that's struggling for depth anyway.

If that's their game style, Casey is in for a world of pain for the year. I have said it time and time again: allowing the opposition backline to move the ball around at will and then transfer it up the ground unopposed is just suicide. It virtually happened three goals in a row, you can can say oh there is no depth, and that's fair enough, but it doesn't excuse effort to man up or run hard.

As matter of interest how many of the Lions players are from their Academy, is this where they get their players along with their afl listed players? The AFL are not providing a level playing field with 4 clubs having priority over their academies to develop them vs how the rest of the comp, well documented and hope they make rule changes to stop the compromise on the draft of matching bids etc

Quote of the day joeboy!

@Demonsone Lions have 9 academy players plus 2 father sons (Ashcrofts) on their list. Thats 11, 25% of their squad, of players that can be nurtured and developed with relative future assurance of being able to bring them into your list.

At any given time the AFL is going to do whatever it can to over deliver on local talent in new markets, at the expense of the rest of the competition. It’s currently Queenslands turn, but don’t worry, we’ll soon have Tasmanian to complain about too.

They really had me fooled when I picked them with great confidence to beat the Bombers at Gather Round last week. I should have recognised that nothing is more quintessentially Melbourne than defeating the undefeated early premiership favourite one week and losing to a winless cellar dweller on its way to establishing a record losing streak the next.
