POSTGAME: Rd 04 vs Gold Coast

Fantastic win, I admit I didn't tip us.

The team is running with confidence and it shows. Relentless and fast footy which is great to watch.

The amazing thing was our midfield dominance considering how young we are in there. Across the ground we unsettled the opposite and did you notice how much they were arguing with each other every time we beat them. Not a team yet on today's performance.

Also better first quarter, though still not leading yet at 1/4 time.

Steele must be in the conversation for recruit of the year.

26 touches at 92% and 8 tackles.

Has arguably had far more impact (on and off the field) than any one of Ryan, Silvangi, TDK and Flanders have had at St Kilda.

Had more impact than those four combined. Silvagni and Ryan have contributed little, Flanders bombs it in and TDK has had some good moments but still yet to dominate a game.

Brilliant, hard fought, fast

Won the Contested Possession, Clearances, Tackles

And beat than fn k 22 Williamson

I dont want to be Debbie Downer, but jeez that bloke is a dead set plonker.

Always seems to crucify, but that might be confirmation bias

But my big issue with him is its like he always wants to impose himself on the game.

What a phenomenal win that was! We played such a bloody entertaining and exciting brand of footy from start to finish. Our fitness has been exceptional this year too. Gold Coast looked absolutely cooked in the last quarter.

K Pickett is absolute box office. My mouth would water every time he had the ball. Sparrow has probably had his two career best games in successive weeks. Steele is an absolute gem of a recruit. I always knew he was tough as nails but he's also much more polished than I thought.

And Gawn... where do we begin? He's a freak of nature.

We'll absolutely [censored] Essendon if we play like we did today.

As long as you have 100 true fans, you won’t ever achieve anything. Gold Coast is this. They lack soul, they lack an identity and they lack anyone giving a [censored] about them. They are essentially pay to win like free to play mobile games.

Handouts by the AFL allowed them Hardwick, Judas, Anderson, Rowell, MaC Andrew…. God, I hope they get picked apart, even if it strengthens Geelong or Collingwood. We may even get a chance to land Mac Andrew in a couple years time as Lever winds down to an end.

Even Williamson?

Hey Rowell, you just got Kolt-locked.

Umpires couldn’t help you out today champion.

Shout out to all the Dees fans at the G today. Watching from the UK I could hear how loud and proud you all were, even the commentators were saying the level of noise was amazing. Particularly some of the dodgy frees/non-frees by the umps, Ben King being HTB cold but they called play on. You guys made sure they knew it was a wrong call!

What a great win. We are playing a very fast, and exciting brand of football. Steele and Mihocek are great experienced recruits. The second Pickett is a very exciting recruit. The new era is starting very well.

Spectacular WIN! The boys are tackling like maniacs and the speed and run I don’t think I’ve seen a Melbourne side like it! Well not since the best of 2021!

SO DO I.

I got on the train at Jolimont by myself but was only by myself for five seconds coz I found myself in a carriage full of Dees maniacs! Crazy beautiful loud Dees peeps and now I have about 30 new friends and no voice.

YEAH THE MIGHTY [censored] DEES!

WE GAVE ‘EM HELL!!!!!

Mate, they got to within 13 points of us, fabulous recruits.

Make that 191 points. Yes, I was there in 1979. No, I still haven't got over our 190 point drubbing by Fitzroy. Fitzroy FFS!

So was I, stayed right to the Final siren.

Thanks for the memories.

Ok we have recruited very well and the young guys are inspiring the older guys.

But it’s the coach!!

A very smart man and the boys absolutely love him!

Even he couldn’t bring us down. But not for want of trying.

Absolutely spewing I've been unable to attend the last 2 games.

But just love what we are doing & may the ride continue

I think you’ll find we reversed the flogging in our next match against them!

My thoughts from today;

  • Umpires always seemed out of position

  • there is no doubt that the Max in Max Gawn stands for Maximum

  • Kicked 100 in 3 games out of 4, gone are the days of wondering where our goals will come from?

  • Gut busting performance from Sparrow

  • Jack Steele clearance and tackling star again

  • Initial burst of speed of Kozzy in the guts great to see after years of one dimensional team.

  • Was worried early on about their big forwards dominance but gone on top of that. Glad Disco is back

  • Need to boost that disposal efficiency a little

  • Sharp fits the system like a glove

What I'm enjoying over the course of our three wins is that there isn't a reliance on one forward to do the damage. Round one it was Roo and Checkers, Round 3 Fritta bobbed up, today it was Melksham.

While I would love to see JVR take a step towards consistency, having a combination of dangerous forwards makes life hard for the opposition defence.

Hit outs:

42 - 27

Clearances:

39-28

Centre Clearances

18-9

Stoppage clearances-

21-19

——————————————————————-

Marks inside 50:

19-14

Tackles inside 50:

13-6

We had 29 shots to 19. Suns kicking 14.5 is super accurate. We very well could have beaten them by 6-7 goals. Missed a few very easy ones and they nailed everything.

What stands out to me is that King has instilled so much confidence in us. I keep expecting us to become jittery late in the 4th quarter, but we keep on coming. He’s taught us how to close out games and our composure is through the roof in comparisons to previous years. On top of that, there’s so much more improvement we can do.

We also look REALLY fit. Players still mowing down suns players with 4 minutes left in the game. At times we’re phrenetic with our tackling.

I’m a little blown away by what King has been able to do already. We look steady and calm

Jake Melksham is the Rising Star Nomination for Round 4

Surely there should be a Geriatric of the year award 🤣😅

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

It's Game Day and the Demons are back at the MCG and have a massive challenge ahead of them as they take on Premiership contender the Gold Coast Suns. What do you want to see from the Dees today?

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
