Jake Bowey Re-Signs Until 2028

Awesome news! Our lovable little ranga has committed to the Dees and no one else will get their grubby mitts on him 🤗

Must only be a 2 year extension as he's contracted for 2026 already?

Dazz, given this is Jeffo's last year in contract, how do you see it panning out?

Hes got big competition Pickett.

Whilst I like him, we're hearing more that Kentfield and Johnson are tearing up the track and would be ahead of him based on whats observed at training on form.

That's on top of still having JVR and Mihocek already ahead of him.

I have my doubts, but its only December.

GO YOU LIL RED FIRE ENGINE. Great news. Such an important part of our current side and future success.

Now just need Chandler to sign up then really aside from Sparrow the remaining are unproven or mainly veterans (30+) and can see how the year plays out.

Couldn’t agree more. Jeffo is a neat player, by that I mean good hands and a good kick. As you alluded there are a number ahead of him purely because they play with some physicality and a real intensity around that. He needs to find some and find some quickly. I genuinely hope he does or he will end up being a Sam Weideman who I also think was a neat footballer. We need depth and real competition for spots across all lines to raise performance and climb back up the ladder. I believe we can.

Just like the gypsy woman said.

Good timing for Bowey at a personal level too - he'll want to renegotiate his next contract given that he'll be a reigning premiership vice-captain going into 2029.

He will be a Free Agent.

Delighted he has extended - would have been very happy if was for a few extra years, like Turner.

I'm a fan of Bowey and he stepped up last year but he just did a lisfranc and we're signing him on for four years? It's a tricky injury to return from.

Only a 2 year extension on top of his contract expiring next year.

Offering a 1 year extension would have been insulting for a player of his quality. This most likely would have invited other clubs to have a serious crack at turning his head. Then we're looking at a player wanting out off limited to no footy and out-of-contract. Doesn't create a good scenario for trade compensation.

2 years provides security and time to recover from his injury without over commiting. Good decision all round in my view.

The lisfranc injury is a definite downer KC but the medical team must be pretty confident of a full recovery in this instance. Jake Bowey has had some bad luck with his collarbone and now foot but he showed in 2025 what a great player that he has become. Well done Bowsa.

Great little player. Hope his 2026 is not too impacted by his injury. Great to keep him into his RFA

I don't think Jeffo will ever be a contested beast, but does he have to be?

While obviously he needs to have enough go to find the ball, I think you need all sorts of players to combine to make an effective forward line.

While the Weid obviously lacked enough of that edge to find enough of the ball to meaningfully contribute on a regular basis, there are others like Big Ben Brown and Jack Watts that I'd suggest had just enough physically to contest, but also had other elite attributes that allowed them to be highly effective players overall. Fritta is another that while not being overtly physical has enough smarts to complete.

Great to see the club show faith and commit to him in light of the injury. Hope they go conservative and get him back right.

As part of the effort to trim the runtime of the regular podcast, we’ve been looking at which segments could be reshaped without losing what makes them valuable. One segment that naturally came into focus was Binman’s Stats Files. Not because it isn’t important; quite the opposite. It’s become such a substantial and much-loved part of the show that it deserves a little room to breathe.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
