I know there were Trac/Oliver issues that year but he won the Bluey in 2024, he had a good season amongst the turmoil. Contract length perhaps too long, but we don't know the ins and outs of it all.

I'd like everyone to get a fresh start for 2026 under the new coach, unfortunately it's a bit delayed for Jack.

And in Jack's defence of the contract extension, he did poll 24 brownlow votes the prior year including 7 "three voters".

If you're polling 7 best on grounds in a season, you have to be considered an A grader for that season and then into the next IMO.

I don't think anyone is suggesting that a contract extension wasn't richly deserved.

An extra one year, maybe a second (at a lower rate), on top of his existing deal would have been accepted by everyone.

It is the final year of the deal that we all objected to at the time and which is looking incredibly stupid right now.

There is absolutely no way that Geelong, to name one incredibly well-managed club, would have even contemplated this deal.

Sadly, we went too long with both Viney and May, and also left ourselves hugely exposed with the length of the Petracca, Oliver and Brayshaw deals.

I should have also said that I do not know the current status of May.

My mail is that it still follows April. 👍

Do these blokes ever factor in what his fitness would look like? Clearly not. Technically his Achilles might be healed by then but his conditioning would be a mile off.

I’m tipping, & without any setbacks, we only see Jack last month at best.

MELBOURNE’S Jack Viney has undergone surgery on his Achilles tendon.

General Manager of AFL Football Performance Alan Richardson provided an update on Viney on Thursday.

“Jack had surgery on his Achilles on Tuesday, and it went really well,” Richardson said.

“It’s been really frustrating for Jack, who has been progressing through this rehab for some time now.

“We wanted to give him the best opportunity to move through rehab without the need for surgical intervention, but unfortunately, he wasn’t responding the way he needed to and as the season drew closer, this was the best option to get him back out on the track.

“He’ll be sidelined for approximately three months, and we’re hopeful that we’ll see him back in the mix for Round 8.

“It’s obviously incredibly disappointing for Jack, but we know he’ll attack this next phase of rehab and continue to play a crucial role in our group over the next few months.”

Jai Culley has successfully undergone surgery on his fractured arm, an injury sustained during last week’s match simulation.

“Jai’s surgery went really well,” Richardson said.

“He should be able to return to running from as early as next week, meaning he’ll be able to maintain his fitness while in rehab.

“We’ll gradually introduce him back into football skills and then contact drills over the next month. Depending on how he responds, we’re confident Jai will be back for the beginning rounds of the season.”

In disappointing news for Kalani White, the young Demon has been sidelined with glandular fever.

“Kalani has returned to Queensland to be with his family while he rests,” Richardson said.

“Our priority is Kalani’s health, so we’ll give him all the time he needs to make sure that he’s right and when he’s ready, we’re looking forward to getting him back in.”

Completely agree with this and I had an argument with another Dees fan over it. Viney has been a fantastic servant of the club and I've loved his career from the start, but the way he and his manager took advantage of us in a weakened position to get an extra couple of years on his contract (when he has already had injury issues) really rubbed me the wrong way. I get it, he's human and ultimately has a life and family outside of the Dees, but when you look at other clubs and see players sacrificing salary/years on their contract to me it reflected poorly not only on Jack but the culture that we have failed to build.

I thought he had received an offer from North and wanted to show loyalty, by a senior player at a time when it was needed.
