MELBOURNE captain Max Gawn will enter rehab after fracturing his finger during training.

The club’s General Manager of AFL Football Performance Alan Richardson provided an update on the skipper on Wednesday.

“Max injured his finger on Monday and will be in a splint for the next three weeks,” Richardson said.

“He’ll be able to continue running and will maintain his fitness, which means his ability to play in the upcoming AFL Origin match won’t be affected.”

Tom Campbell has also been sidelined, injuring his neck during training.

“Tom was involved in an innocuous collision at training and has suffered a neck injury,” Richardson said.

“He’s torn a ligament and will remain in a neck brace for the next month. He’ll see a neurosurgeon this week to determine the path forward for him.”

Bailey Laurie has suffered a fracture to his hand at training.

“Bailey underwent surgery on his broken hand this week, and we’re hopeful he won’t miss too much football,” Richardson said.

“His return will be determined according to his hand functionality, but it’s likely that he’ll be back with the main group in the next couple weeks.”

Jack Henderson is expected to return to main training at the end of February, with the Demon managing a stress fracture to his sacrum throughout pre-season.

“Scans this week have shown that, unfortunately, Jack will remain in rehab for this next period of pre-season,” Richardson said.

“While it’s a frustrating outcome for Jack, we know he’ll attack this next stage with the same commendable professionalism as always.”

Jack Viney, who has been working through an Achilles injury, has returned to running with the hopes to join the main group shortly.

“Jack’s been managing that Achilles soreness and, pleasingly, has been making some really positive steps through that rehab,” Richardson said.

“We expect him to return to full training in the next few weeks.”

Harry Sharp has suffered a hamstring injury but has started progressing through his rehab and is expected to return to full training in the next few weeks.

In December, it was confirmed that Jake Boweyhad sustained a long-term foot injury, with the Demon beginning to work through the early stages of rehab.

Tom Matthews (meniscus), Brody Mihocek (toe), Shane McAdam (Achilles), and Andy Moniz-Wakefield (ACL) all continue to progress through their respective rehab programs, with all Demons eyeing off returns over the next two months in the lead up to Round 1.

How does this compare to other clubs? I know there have been a bunch of injuries reported this week. Not sure how our list stacks up, but it looks terrible to me.

Hope he doesn’t play origin game. Better he doesn’t play and doesn’t risk a huge injury for nothing. My personal view.

Mihocek. This from September:

"Craig McRae says the Mihocek injury involved a torn tendon in that dislocated toe"

Is it a concern that it's still an issue 4 months later? Injuries to feet seem to really drag on, or worse.

Gawn will be playing Rd 1, barring any other injury.

Miochek is on a load rehab and is running. If his toe was an issue there’d by no ‘loading’ on it.

Viney is 50/50 to play Rd 1 based on his history with overcoming injury.

Whilst there are some injuries to a few players, I’m glad it’s not guys Like Windsor, Langford, Xavier Taylor, Turner, Picketts. They are the players that will determine how we go in 2026. Aside from Bowey, none of the others were in our best 23, aside from those outlined above and AMW, who replaces Bowey

It’s an atrocious injury list at this time of year considering they’ve just had a 3 week break and we haven’t had any serious practice matches yet.

Hopefully things settle down and we’ll only have Bowey missing for round 1.

I think 90% of people on this forum share this view.

Unfortunately our other star is eligible to play on a technicality (while Will Ashcroft is ineligible to play on a technicality)

It's really not that bad, and most clubs have somewhere between 5-15 out at any one time. 11 isn't great but is pretty standard and not many are to best 22 players.

We have 1 new bad injury since preseason started with was Bowser.

We've got 4 guys coming back from injuries last season in AMW, McAdam, Mihocek and Matthews. AMW and Mihocek have done a fair bit of main drills.

We've got 3 collision injuries to Gawn, Laurie and Campbell. Those are going to happen. Laurie and Gawn's don't sound serious. Sounds like TC's is, but that happens.

2 guys battling overuse injuries in Viney and Henderson, both since last year. Viney hopefully winning his battle.

1 short term soft tissue in Sharp.

Where are the terrible and atrocious comments coming from?

Gawn will be back a few weeks.

Bowey is a blow. Viney will be back for round 1

Any other best 22 injuries?

Mihocek will be fine by round 1

Compared to other teams we are looking ok

this irrational fear of injury i find strange. Gawn has been a beast of durability and is just as likely to be injured in an intraclub game

That might not be all. Jake Melksham seems to be doing his own tailor made pre season which doesn’t involve joining in general training yet. CJ and one or two others might also have a lighter load.

Yep, a lot depends on the next 2 months.

Last season we had a dream run up 'til xmas, then a horror run in January and February.

Fingers crossed the opposite is true this season.
