Music Recommendation thread for off-season Boredom

Featured Replies

Off-season Time, we are all bored with nothing to do!!

So this is a thread for all your great song recommendations

But this is for the lesser known music, the obscure and unique.

no Beatles, Zeppelin, Floyd, NIrvana ETC

No obvious stuff everyone knows and loves

just for the unique Gems you have Discovered that you want to share

I will start with something I discovered on the YouTube Algorithm. that is a Masterpiece I Love to show anyone who will listen.

Very much hope others will join in on this and we can discover some musical masterpieces together...

there is always something NEW to listen to. Music never dies!

Listening to the Beatles Anthology 4 released today ... Sorry!!

Yeah, but we all know that...

how about something a little more unique as a recommendation? as appose to the most popular band in history?

Some great Brisbane bands from the last 18 months.

Girl and Girl, call the doctor

Full flower moon band

Radium Dolls. 2024 album legal speed. And new album coming out before xmas

Two of the best songwriters, Paul Kelly and Mick Thomas have great new albums.

Just bought tix to Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings. If you want something laid back for Xmas instead of Sinatra etc.

Ella Fitz and Count Basie Xmas album for Xmas day

Last Quokka were fantastic live this year. Great album if you want some fantastic Australian punk rage

Perhaps you all just need a little persuasion...

  • probably should not have done this.

War on Drugs are a band that all ages can embrace, I’ll never tire of recommending them.

This is one of their bigger live songs and it has this bubbling energy that draws me in every single time.

I’ve been lucky enough to see them 3-4 times and every one has floored me, even the most recent when the singer, Adam, was sick as a dog.

Not particularly obscure but some awesome listening on a sunny Saturday afternoon:

Garden State (the movie) soundtrack. Featuring The Shins, Colin Hay, Simon & Garfunkel, Zero 7, Nick Drake. It’s a ripper. Been a staple for years.

Have also been listening to the Triple J Hottest 100 from 1997 on repeat for months recently (via Spotify playlist, with the full 100 songs). Featuring The Whitlams, Blur, Radiohead, Jebediah, Ben Folds, Nick Cave, The Tea Party, so many good songs - it’s a ripper.

It’s a Grand Old Flag.

You beat me to it. I am never ever bored hearing the Grand Old Flag, more so at the final siren.

Righto, let's broaden some horizons!

And now we've had a little light fun, time for something rarer than an actually easy Demonstone quiz. I was pretty pleased with myself for finding this a few weeks back.

Wolf Hunt, presenting the voice of a young wolf trapped in the encirclement created by a mass hunt, breaks the rules of tradition by crossing the lines of flags and ropes set up by hunters to deter the wolves from escaping the closing hunters. Generation after generation of wolves are massacred because they never break the rules, but this one breaks free of the rules and suddenly finds itself free of the massacre as well.

And that's a story he told in Soviet Russia in the late 1960s.

Some Great Recommendations!! Good Work!

My former bandmate’s son, Tom Ralphs (based in Norwich, UK); oh, and he happens to be wearing one of my band’s t-shirts 😉

I shed a tear when this man passed…

Went to catch the Hard-Ons at the Bendi tonight, was a great gig, enjoyed it 🤘😁

Hawkwind " There is no space for us" whole album❤️

Steve Morse "Triangulation"

And blast from the past.....

BUSTER BROWN "Something to say"

I mean, The Black Crowes and Sublime are back for Bluesfest (boooooo to no northern rivers side show, sublime!). Boooooo the Black Crowes being sold out in Bris, lucky me and @Brownie saw em just 2 years ago. Seeing 250k or so of guitars on stage for Richie 🤩

I’ll be in the mosh pit for my 7th lagwagon gig at Miami Marketta in Feb for the Hoss anniversary tour. So, Lagwagon.

Tool is coming out soon so, Tool

But very [censored] importantly, Refused aren’t [censored] dead yet and are on their last tour to AU. So play some Refused. Hopefully that means Dennis can go back to the International Noise Conspiracy

But very very very very importantly I’m hearing Soundgarden’s demos recorded just prior to Chris’ soul crushing death will be released followed by a tour. Stick Down on the Upside on and crank Tighter and Tighter up. Prophetic. Then crank Like Suicide and Day I Tried to Live up. Mannnnnnn. What a loss.

Then to cheer yourself up, some Clutch. Coz they’re just grouse

Thought Brisbane outfit Ball Park Music did a good job supporting Oasis on tour.

Give them a go but just don't blame me when 'Please don't move to Melbourne' gets stuck in your head.

Is there anything better than Soundgarden music on a damn good sound system?

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
