Welcome to Demonland: Thomas Matthews

It wasn’t anything personally directed at you @Ghostwriter. Just referring to the incident where a person in a position of power crossed the line and tainted the moment for the player. Where ‘the line’ is? That’s subjective, but if in doubt then pull up well short of it.

As for Thomas Matthews - looks like a ripper of a kid. Give him a hug on my behalf too. Just promise me you wont stick your tongue in his ear.

A little bit of Jamie Elliot about him from his highlights - one can dream.

That's the most exciting quote I've read all pre season. As you say One Can Dream. I'll join that dream of yours if you don't mind.

Idk what this means, but a male supporter hugging the W players at training would never happen IF THE PLAYERS HAD A PROBLEM WITH IT. Same goes for a female supporter hugging the M players at training, or anyone, regardless of their gender.

The club isn’t worried about hurting a supporter’s feelings. If a player is creeped out or for any other reason doesn’t wish to engage with a supporter, trust me, the club will immediately put an end to it.

It’s not unprecedented. There have been cases where a supporter has been banned from contact with players. As recently as 18 months ago a huge fan (and player-sponsor) of the W was unceremoniously cut off from all contact with the W players due to “unwanted attention.”

I hug the W players at training, too. But this is never an issue on here 🤷‍♀️

Really don't think you have to justify your great relationship with the players on here Ghosty. We are just glad you spread the love and pass it on here.

It’s called having an opinion.

Most opinions are fine as long as they agree with me.

Young Thomas Mathews is in excellent physical shape, been working out in the gym whilst rehabbing thats for sure.

One of my mates is quite friendly with him. Apparently absolute gun could be our future star. Might be the steal of the draft. Super pumped to watch him play.

could you find out how far off full training he is? ie Is he one to watch in 26 or do we wait til 27.

Just wait until puberty hits

I think its always good to get the Gippsland Power lads. A lot of the power youngstars end up at Casey if they don't get drafted. When you are from Gippsland, you are used of the long travel growing up, so the Casey issue is negligent to a lot of the kids drafted out of Gippland, or any already in the AFL system. The more Power kids we draft the better, so long as its warranted.

3 gippsland players that the MFC have had strong interest in and should still have a strong interest in are

  1. B Humphrey

  2. A Tauru

  3. C Serong

Definitely has the Ricky Jackson look build and vibe about him.

For those too young to understand, Google the name.. you’ll be impressed

I was going to say try Ricky Steamboat Jackson, but that probably won't work either.

I'm 41 now and would of been about 7 when I wore the 45 for a few years.

Was speaking to a dad today whose son has played with Tom through junior footy & gippy power past couple years. Says the kid’s a ripper. Genuine small who knows where the sticks are & loves it. Seen him kick some freak goals over the journey.

Reckons he’s an elite snap of the footy for goal, better than his set shot.

That one served about 30 years in prison. Like Reuben "Hurricane" Carter, he was convicted for "something that he never done".

Our own Ricky Jackson was the same height (171cm) as Tommy Matthews and started at the club in 1986 after playing in junior teams at the Tigers. He had his moments but his career was cut short by injuries. He had a big season with the Demons in 1988 when we made the Grand Final but after that his impact declined and by 1991 he was traded to the Bulldogs where I believe he struggled to get a game.

The key question is still unanswered;

Will Tomato be ripe by the end of summer?

Any updates since last training?

We're all looking forward to seeing him Roma the forward line.

Don’t undersell Ricky Jackson, the actual ex Dees’ forward.

He actually kicked 5 goals in a preliminary final against Carlton.. no mean effort

If he can slice through the midfield, we’ll witness puree genius.

I’m around the same age and wore 9 for Alan Johnson. Both of them have proved to be pretty good numbers for us

Was it like a match worn jumper?

I went to a fundraising night and Steven Powell’s match worn jumper got put up for auction. It was a boozy night and my uncle went in with the first bid that was ridiculous and the entire room went silent in disbelief.

Then I would go to the footy with him the following year and his young daughters (at the time) would be wearing it and spilling pies and tomato sauce all over it

Sauce?

Hoping for a bit of Cody Weightman about this fella.

It’s clear the drafting and list management team have prioritised some forward line spunk and dynamism this drafting season.

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
