Next Captain? (in a few years)

Featured Replies

Late night thinking got me wondering, When Max eventually gives up captaincy in the future who steps up? Jack Viney is 32 next season, does Jake Lever step up for a few years? although he turns 30 next season too.

the only other person i can think of is Trent Rivers?

interested in everyones thoughts

Rivers is an obvious one, but I wouldn’t be surprised if some of our young guns like Langford and Lindsay develop into those roles

Disco another who has reported leadership qualities

I think the more we empower this younger core the better set we’ll be for the future

I’m also thinking Trent Rivers with Langford Lindsay, Chandler, Disco and JvR in the developing leadership group. We currently have a bit of added leadership in the team with Steele joining our ranks and hopefully a fit Lever will also bolster our on field leadership.

I am feeling a bit more bullish about the potential leadership depth within our younger playing group.

Kosi if he wants it. Easily the best player at the Club outside of Max. Would provide a different style of leadership. Would he want it though?

How did you have that so ready?!

I know that a lot of people aren’t fans of co captain but I think rivers and disco co captains would be what I’d look into, both look to be future leaders, although with not many other options to go to they may have to head into it before they are necessarily ready which is why I’d like to see them do it together

What safest thou on the manners and lordly qualities of yonder Zak, scion of the Butterses?

We're in an awkward situation where we seem to have a great many young players with good character and leadership potential, but none who explicitly stand out as 'next captain'.

It might be very, very interesting to see who emerges with new boldness as player and leader without the two 'awkward' champions filling the status.

I'm cautiously optimistic that a leader will rise, but would not make any predictions with confidence.

Hmm 2 or 3 years ago Tracc was the obvious choice. Im sure when the vacancy appears there'll be someone the right age with leadership qualities. They dont exactly need to be All-Australian standard, just in the best 18 or 23. I'm sure every club always has someone in the wings. Tasmania don't even have one player yet. But I'm sure they're not panicking about who's their leadership group let alone captain.

Chandler is a heart and soul type who can string a sentence together. Personally I hope this is a conversation for 2029…

Disco would need to see more of, Rivers maybe, Lever would be ok if there was an unexpected bus in the nearer future. Viney, I think is a good vice, his intensity is Gen X, not sure it sells with the millennials (works fine for me but at 55 not pulling on a jumper anytime soon). Happy to be surprised by one of the recent draftees.

Chandler already seems involved on a leadership level. He was apparently included in last year's meeting(s?) with Trac, Max and Viney.

Once again though, hurting big time with the loss of Guss and ANB.

I attended a club event where Rivers presented confidently and eloquently, and gave me great confidence that he was our leader going forward, however his on field form since then has been very spasmodic and hardly inspiring, so I now have great reservations about his promotion to the role.

At this stage there’s a great chasm within the club of leadership candidates, with those younger players mentioned here, apart from Bowey, and Kozi ( who certainly doesn’t seem like one who’d clamour for the role) being probably lucky to get regular selections in the team anyway

Whilst loved, he is introverted and a past player has told me that Kosi and the indigenous boys largely kept to themselves at the club (at the time this guy was playing anyway).

Big jump to go from that to captain of the entire playing group.

Chandler is THE MOST overated player on the list. Harvey Langford is captaincy material!

I don’t spend any time around the players so my perspective is very outside.

All the potential options need to do a power of work to become more regular contributors on field before they can assume captaincy.

All of Lever, Rivers, Chandler, Disco etc have been very up and down so far and it’s not a good look to have captains who are not in the team.

I am hopeful King frees them up a little and Disco becomes the one. He seems to be able to find a gear when we need it and he plays the right way.

Absolutely.

You just wouldn’t do it to him.

A lot of media and public speaking involved and they are basically shy, quiet and reserved men.

Trent Rivers then daylight. Maybe Disco as vice.
