Just makes my decision to suspend my membership next year all the more logical.

Gobsmacked at the stupidity of this club.

Tell the world he is a VFL player. And then get an offer for a third round pick, while still paying half his salary.

Just an absolute shambles.

But it is completely bad faith negotiating to make your first offer and a low ball offer at that, the day before trading closes.

Tell them if you can’t afford his salary, we will look at a player swap, to assist your salary cap and save your pick.

This is real dirty dealing by them.

Tell them the wheel will turn if that is how they operate.

But is it their first?

A F3 offer has been floating around for over a week with discussion on % salary split to be had. I have little doubt we tried to improve that offer.

But as I said, we have no bargaining power at all and GWS dug their heels in: Take it or take him back!

take him back!

We chose to blow the relationship up, despite Clarry being invested and wanting to stay

We did this

When you not only blow things up, but also let such a blow up leak, you have no leg to stand on

GWS are happy to put in the effort we obviously no longer want to put in, while we pay for it

How to lose a trade 101

That sounds like an impassioned plea, Wells.

Sadly, we can't. Too many bridges burnt over time.

And after the dummy spit reaction to the meeting to discuss his role can't see him wanting to come back.

The bigger shambles was not dealing with him properly when he was out of control, I didn’t see too many people threatening to cancel their memberships then.

We knew this was coming, the club has to suck it up and move on for the betterment of the team.

That is the only sensible thing to do. Apologise and take him back. As I wrote the other day, he is a mercurial talent of the type we don't see often. I note all this speculation about (rumours) of his appalling off-field behaviour etc. From what I have seen (watching training) he is a really hard worker and seems to get on well with the playing group. He doesn't appear to have a toxic presence at training. So I am sceptical of all these culture arguments for giving a brilliant player away for nothing and humiliating him in the process.

I also note that Geelong seems to be able to accommodate all sorts of eccentric personalities and the coach gives the players plenty of latitude to be themselves. I suspect the new MFC coach is old school authoritarian in approach and that era has passed.

I understand the position we are in and that a deal will be done and we can then settle back and wait for the abuse from our supporters and the derision from the media, but such is footy life.

Maybe Pert had the better deal and it should have been taken, which I think was a F1st and Cats pay $1m of his salary.

Spilt milk now of course.

Ok, here is what rpfc would do; keep him and front end the bulk of his remaining salary next year. Then you can literally ship him off entirely next year. With CP5 going we will have the space. If he happens to pull his finger out - then bonus.

If we knew this was coming, we should have let him go to Geelong last year.

Or we should have started this process earlier than two business days before trade period, so that we didn’t have to rush it.

There’s almost nothing we’ve done in relation to this situation that is anything other than shambolic. And we’re about to pay a ridiculously steep price for that.

So this only offer, comes effectively on the last day of trading.

Giants wait until the last minute to make a low ball offer.

This is the club we gave Bedford to.

That is not negotiating in good faith.

When it comes to trade week, we are an easy prey due to our incompetence.

Do you think GCS are going to show good faith with the Trac trade, after we gifted them picks a couple of years ago, just to move up 3 spots late in the 1st round? No, they'll screw us over.

It's like a Lamb to the slaughter.

This deal was only mentioned by Clarry’s journo of choice - Morris - this year.

Last year Cats said we pay a pick or we pay cash and not both. No chance a club as tight as Geelong were actually going to pay up a pick and take on a big bulk of the cash.

Or perhaps other clubs have a good understanding of the risk they are taking on re Clarry and we need him off our list to move forward. I love a redemption story but there is no way we would be trading Clarey if he was meeting lur expectstions as a professional footballer.

Correct. Pert knew what had to be done and why. But Clarry's protectors closed ranks and Clarry stayed only for there be no value in a trade 12 months later.

Very, very sad for everyone..

I believe someone confirmed the offer that was made last year and not Morris.

We in hindsight made a big blue. A real big one.

Agree

From “outside of the MFC 4-walls”, right now this can only be described as a disaster.

Clayton Oliver. 4 x MFC B&F winner. 205 games. One of the very best players ever to wear red & blue. Signed in 2021 to a monster 8 year deal. Seemingly now being harpooned at age 29, reportedly to be traded out for a “future 3rd round in 2026” which probably ends up as a pick “55” that MFC won’t even use !!

And to also have to pay for anywhere between reported 40-50% of his wage for the next 5 seasons at circa $700k per annum

I hope the “inside the MFC 4-walls” has got this one right !?!?! It’s going to be a sad end to a year once sparkling Demon career.

If this is why you have suspended your membership, then you need to have a good hard look at yourself. Clarry has put the club through the absolute ringer and you want to land on his side. Spare me mate and sign up for the Giants, they need all the members they can get

Club put Clarry through the ringer. He had every right to spit the dummy after the way the club treated him. Natural, human reaction. Thanks Mr King.

🤔

In hindsight we should have traded Clarry in 2022. While his trade value might be lower than last year (who knows what Geelong offered and how that compares to GWS) it does privide King and our new Footy Department to set clear expections re standards that will help drive our culture.

I suspect the way we handled Oliver since 2022 probably wouldn't sit well with players wanting more time on ball and without moving on Clarry at best we don't develop our young midfield and more likely have players want to leave.

Not sure he's done anything significantly wrong all through the 24 season until now to breach his contract.

You're probably right as a football contract doesn't seem to have the same workplace rules attached

Seems to me that footballers can do whatever they like, in a behavioural sense

However, the club is so sick of his behaviour and antics that we're willing to pay another club up to $3.5Million all for a future 3rd pick?

He's affectively been sacked and told to pack his bags

If a deal falls through, then we'd be liable for all the money we owe him as the contracts are so heavily in the players favour. Casey? Won't happen ... we'd buckle

Mind you, this sort of thing is quite prevalent in overseas sports ... especially in Soccer & USA sports

Said player won't be the first or last to flagrantly thumb their nose at their responsibilities (and keep all the money)

It pays not to play favourites or grow too attached (to footballers)

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
