It’s always darkest before the day dawneth.

I think it's like a jack in the box. Set to explode so best it explodes at GWS rather than at MFC.

In hindsight we should have traded him last year.

At least Petracca deal will hell us save face.

It’s obvious now that Goodwin was not equipped to handle the cultural issues at the club.

too close to the players

absolutely correct decision by the club to remove him

I'm sorry, but I still don't get it. Would the MFC really part with Clarry for just a future 3rd round pick?? And, then still have to pay half is salary??!! Maybe it's just me, but if done, that has to be the insanest trade deal in history! (Especially if we get picks 7 & 8 for Trac...!)

Possibly our saddest day in 60 years.

It’s players moving footy clubs, hardly life or death. The club is always bigger then the player

Yep also considering GWS have offered him peanuts, so Essentially they will be paying the same amount for a 3 time All Australian, 3 time best and fairest player as they will be for a first year player, thanks Melbourne.

If they want him gone they won't get anyone stupid enough to take his whole wage, but I still understand how there isn't clauses in contracts for "mishaps" which lead to player attitude, some kind of get out of jail free clause. So many players go off the rails and clubs are the ones to suffer with these contracts, it's [censored].

It speaks volumes to how untennable Oliver's position is at the MFC. We want him gone at all costs and are essentially paying someone to take him. There is no Option B of Oliver being at the Club next year.

i'm surprised no-one has suggested clarrie take a pay cut which could reduce our contribution to a more acceptable level, say around $200k. just doesn't sit well when his bad behaviour is the sole cause for this disaster

$7m over 5 years will help

he was already getting that, so no change

hope he enjoys the gws home crowds

We are our own worse enemies, we keep looking at the same AFL media reports and getting angrier about the expected result. We all have a fair inkling of what is going to happen yet continue to try and barter the result. I have gone through at least four of the stages and will have to accept the final result. We have no control on the inevitable, so I have stopped beating myself and the club up, whatever Clayton did or didn’t do has pushed the club to the unthinkable.

He also had no idea in terms of talent identification.

They’re all very sad days for different reasons. And there’s plenty to choose from. I have a friend who says for her there will never be a day sadder than Boxing Day 2004 💔

Good point I had forgotten that one.

It is hard for Dees fans to accept because Clarry was such an awesome midfielder in the past but he is a bust now. It has been a big fall from grace and let us make no mistake about it, self-inflicted. Sometimes you just have to cut your losses and move on (for both club and player). Clarry will always be viewed as a major cog in the Dees drought breaking '21 Flag and many consecutive seasons of top notch footy. He should be remembered for that. Going forward, it is better he has a shot at redemption at the Giants IMHO.

Was part of them at times unfortunately

No issue putting any clause you want in a contract. Will the player accept it though.

Pies and De Goey had a major stand-off over the inclusion of a "morals" clause a few years back. As I recall both parties settled on a watered down version.

This is true, all of it is true. But that doesn’t help ease the heartbreak. I appreciate the respectful way in which you word it though, unlike the heartless and nasty ways others choose their words. It says a lot about the fans on here when our one non-Demons fan shows the most sensitivity and care.

Hearing ya Jim, but if your fit and healthy, and playing your best footy, you wouldn't have an issue with a clause like that, opposed to to de goey, not wanting to sign because he was midst that stage of his life playing up etc.

Why does Jamarra's contract get torn up and he sits on a lower salary for 2026 and beyond?

And Oliver gets his full payment terms?

Can someone enlighten me?

Because Jamarra won't be playing anywhere if he doesn't find a home. Dogs will basically sack him and eat the final year of his contract. We would be on the hook for Oliver for years if we did the same.

JUH's contract at WBD was for one more year. Oliver's is another 5 years..

A club can renegotiate a contract with a player when traded in which is what GCS have done.

Every chance GWS will with Oliver but that contract stands separate to Oliver's contract with us for our $ portion til 2030.

Once mfc $ for Oliver's contract are decided, I wouldn't be surprised if GWS re-write Oliver's contract. Less money overall, less guaranteed $, more $ incentives and behaviour clauses.

Surely that is open for abuse?

I don't know about abuse but that is how it works. Its up to the player and manager to negotiate a new contract with the new club. The new club does not have to take the terms of the contract with the old club.

If you mean GWS end up paying less than the 'nominal' value of Oliver's contract after deducting the mfc portion, yes that can and probably will happen particularly as Oliver said last year he would take a pay cut if we traded him - the pay cut was with Geelong not with mfc.
