Welcome to Demonland: Steven King

It makes the next few months very interesting - assistant coach appointments, other appointments, approach to trade and drafting. Will we adopt the Geelong style of play (however you define it) or does he have his own.

Are we rebuilding or can he tweak the right things to get us back up the ladder?

A nice start from hiim:

“Melbourne has a rich history, and I feel very humbled to be given this opportunity at one of the oldest professional sporting clubs in the world,” King said. “I can’t wait to meet the playing group, my fellow coaches, the staff, and the Demon faithful, and start building towards 2026.”

That's how you do it! 👏👏👏

Little glimpse i suppose.

I have no in depth knowledge of the world of assistant coaches but he seems to hsve good credentials and congrats on the Dees for going with a novice senior coach. Looking forward to seeing what style of play the Dees will have in 2026 👍

PS - I reckon Buckley is Tasmania bound.

I reckon Buckley is scrap heaps bound. As soon as Goodwin was sacked he put his hand up for the job

When I think about it, I want a coach who wants to coach us. And it sounds like King wants to coach us, so all is good. Long live the King!

And yet he's still an assistant at Geelong

He must've had the IT factor (has this been used?)

Good form.
Probably time for a profile photo change.
May i suggest

Can someone explain to me why so many people wanted Buckley? He was a poor coach last time. He took over a side consistently playing finals and took them to the bottom. He was unpopular with the players. He never won a flag as a player or coach. What exactly does he bring to the table aside from a famous name?

Haaaa! Salem's Lot liked your post. When will Cujo, Carrie and Christine chip in?

And of course, the footballers' favourite pundit, S. Redemption.

He had a health scare when going for the WCE job and pulled out. Was the leader at the time as well

Well hopefully he's got his health issues started. Because as a Melbourne coach your stress will be tested

Caroline Wilson, Brendan Gale and Andrew Dillon must be feeling very smug right now.

They got their man!

And let's hope it's bullet dodged from us on Buckley and King turns into a premiership coach with us. 😉

Every premiership coach started as a 1st time coach, has learnt from the best Scott & would know great culture & standards, interest to see which assistants he brings or keeps

Agree - I couldn't believe people were a keen on him. Would have been a disaster.

Did I miss read somewhere in thinking Gerard whateley broke the story? How did he know & he doesn't do radio on fridays.

I have had a really drawn out day at work so I may just be making this up

If Tassie decide they want a premiership coach I reckon we could offer bucks an assistant coaching role. Maybe start him off as part time development and he can work his way up

This joke is getting old

Agreed I think the thread should be can God save the King

50 years since a ruckman has coached a premiership in the VFL/AFL.

I wish him well and at this stage this seems like a sensible appointment

He has a very good CV and has worked closely with some good senior coaches. he is currently in charge of GFC midfield who seem to go ok.

I'm not having a pot at Goody but having watched a few of King's past interviews he appears to be pretty capable at handling the media and answering questions clearly.

Time will tell if this puts us back in the race but I'm feeling more confident in our chances next season having made this change than if we had done nothing.

Maybe, but Buckley being non committal this late in the process would have been a major red flag

I’ll take them at their word that King was the preferred candidate

And one thing is for sure, we know he wants it

Why on earth would Buckley go through the whole interview process & then um & ah ? He had known about TAS for a long time ..,he wanted to coach Melb but the club followed due process & appointed King. End of story . All the click bait journalists etc can spin their own narrative ..,who cares..let’s just acknowledge & support our club & coach. I’m very happy

Welcome Kingy.
Bring on the flair.
Entertain me.
