Welcome to Demonland: Steven King

Interesting in his interview on SEN today he was not wanting to commit to Latrelle debuting this week (when presumably unless there's an injury he's in) but also when asked about Nasiah and said we would back our whole system in.

I always thought Goody didn't play many games with this sort of thing and if he said something about selection or strategy it was pretty spot on (maybe why he tried to give so little away). Some other coaches deliberately mislead - maybe they think it will give them an edge on their opponent.

Will be interesting to see how King goes with this - surely after the weekend, it makes sense to have someone run with Nas this week.

Maybe they haven't communicated to Latrelle yet that he will be debuting and so don't want to publicly announce anything before they've confirmed with him?

For those without Foxtel

Music to the ears of those who haven't already written off Tholstrup...

"He's going to play in numerous positions Gaz. His athletic profile is off the charts. He can run around at high speed for a long time, so it's just harnessing where we do that and for a young man trying to establish himself, how much is too much and in what position, but the way I want the game played, for our players they are going to have to play multiple positions, so he's a inside, wing, half-forward, he's even got the competitiveness to play at half back but I know that someone with his athletic profile, he's going to have a crack at playing league footy, he's going to be up for it, so fits the way we want to play"

We have heard the talk now it is time to walk.

All the words about bold new gameplan and playing attacking and daring footy now need to be shown.

Your Coach 2026 - Steven King before his debut as Melbour...

It's been a big off-season of learning for Steven King. Ahead of his first official game as Melbourne coach this weekend, King sits down with Josh Gabelich to discuss his first pre-season in charge.

Random fact but his wife was a presenter back in the day for the game show Price Is Right.

Love this bloke. Says exactly what I want to hear about letting blokes follow their instincts and playing with freedom. You can’t expect athletes to dominate playing a game that demands they restrain their energy, so I’m glad that’s gone….

It’s like telling Jimi Hendrix to play a simple Rythm Guitar chord for 2 hours….

early days but very positive signs. I think we picked the right man for the job (and so glad we did not go with figjam)

There are quite a few blokes who don't like being told on Tuesday that they have to go to work on Sunday.

His game style involves more aggressive ball movement with less emphasis on winning stoppages so we create a more open forward line.

I loved this too. Also to note, as soon as the goal was kicked he got on the phone and gave the instruction to "save the game". At that point the tempo slowed and Checkers went behind the ball as a spare. Awesome coaching.

Buy in.

Webster's dictionary defines it as buying supplies or commodities in large quantities from an external supplier.

In footy land we see it as a group of individuals following a leader's vision and trusting the process 100%.

Also note that King was quickly told by everyone in the box that he was on the telly (and to cool it).

It would have been a disaster.

Gawny on triple M this morning mentioned something really interesting into the insight of Steven King.

Apparently pre game before Kingy got the players in, he gathered all the staff and footy department in first and had a big talk to them and supposedly nearly had a tear in his eye.

Sounds like a pretty special moment.

Who would have imagined, when the season kicked off early last month, that Melbourne would emerge from the opening six weeks with wins over both Queensland powerhouses? At the time, Gold Coast and Brisbane were the competition’s early pace-setters, the flavours of the month, and the prospect of the Demons toppling both within the course of a fortnight seemed remote. Yet here they are, banking those scalps alongside home victories over two traditional Victorian rivals and building a quietly impressive resume.
