Guess we didn't leak this to the media. It took em by surprise.... I'm now convinced it's the players managers making up stories and leaking to the media

The Eyebrow with legs has done it again. Quirk. Melbourne Storm are one of the best run sporting organisations in the country. I dream of the day we are as well run and as successful as they are.

Don’t say Buckley

….

Buckley

Don’t mention Buckley . . . I mentioned him once, but I think I got away with it all right. . . So it’s all forgotten now and let’s hear no more about it.

Jobe Fricken' Watson - what the heck would he know about being part of a successful, high performing sporting organisation?

Im a fan of this personally. I imagine with his bitter experience he understands too well what it means to have a football department disconnected from the players. He would understand what players might respond to and need. By all accounts a smart guy.

i'm okay with jab being aboard the coaching hunt as he loathes james hird, so that likely rules the latter out of being appointed our coach on the recommendation of the former

Never heard this. Thought most of the Essendon players maintained that he didn't do anything wrong.

I honestly can't work out the Jobe Watson selection. The guy has been out of club land for years, wasn't part of any successful era at a club, his media commentary has been less than impressive, and I'm unaware of his involvement with other panels.

Does anyone have any insight on this?

Feel like they missed a trick not asking a Jimmy Bartel or a Jason Dunstall type.

Firstly, do we know they didn't ask Jimmy Bartel, Jason Dunstall or any others of that type (whatever that means)?

I think Watson appears to be an astute choice. He's not that long out of the game that it has moved on too far. I have found his TV commentary to be measured and shows an understanding of the strategic elements of the game. At the same time, he doesn't appear to over-react, which in TV commentary might make him seem dull to some, but measured to others. Importantly, having had one of the worst experiences in AFL that is possible, he knows the importance of having a coach who knows right from wrong.

Why do people take issue with Watson?

I think it's important to have an ex player/captain on the panel, especially one who went through a lot of upheaval from a cultural standpoint.

And if anyone thinks he would vote for Hird you are deluded. Hird ruined his career and robbed him of a Brownlow.

One cap, two ledgers. One compliant, one less-compliant.

Sure is. Elite player development, leadership and player culture. A real benchmark.

The only thing we have in common with the Storm is that we too have breached salary cap ohhhh and we share AAMI Park.

Please god, let us not leak like a sieve during this process.

I want everyone to have no idea until the official announcement

If anything is leaked to Browne or Caro or others during the next month all members should be furious

Too late, I have heard a whisper it is Buckley

Excellent externals especially parnissi. Smith also as you would expect so will have fingerprints on process and outcome as he should as incoming chair.

Announcement from Green is timely as he noted last week.

Watson is left field but he comes across as articulate and will have solid background on footy department ops. Richo hasn't been sacked so currently needs to be on but hardly will impact selection being possibly on borrowed time.

Fills me with confidence.

Let's not forget all the Buckley talk has been by Nathan and assorted media tarts.

Agree all round!!

Serious question. Is it Meahan or Meaghan?

Club website says Meahan but I'm not sure how much I trust our media team to get that right lol.

Will be interesting to see what Buckley does with our game plan. Does he try to transition us further toward a transition game? Try to continue to mold contest players into transition players? Or let them play to their strengths and dictate an older contested style?

Sounds like we don't need a selection panel, just a coffee or two and some paperwork signed.

Do people really thing its predetermined and they'd go through a public charade for the sake of it? What a waste of time if they do that...surely not!

This reminds me of a comment comparing Mick Malthouse's coaching style with Paul Roos. I can't remember who said it, but it was said that Malthouse demanded players change to meet his requirements and if they couldn't do that, they should move on. Conversely, it was claimed that Roos identified what a player's strengths were, and worked with the player to get the best out of them.

It also makes me wonder if it's important to keep someone like Chapman on board to provide continuity from how we were transitioning to a transition game plan is so far as to provide a smooth transition from that transion to how we want to transition under a new coach.

Do we want to go to a totally new gamestyle for the third time in 2 years or just make tweaks to the direction we were headding with a fresh voice?

So much transitioning.

If Jobe can be as concise and articulate on this panel as he is with this special comments, he will be a great addition

Hopefully he can predict where the game might be headed, not just catch up to what is working now in 2 years when it is outdated

I don't know why everyone is so quick to think signing Bucks is a forgone conclusion. My mail is that is that he was keen and would need to be sold. This panel might also be a panel to convince him as well as sound out some assistants and if Bucks falls through then pick the best of the rest.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
