Effing disgraceful way to treat a premiership coach. You want premierships every year, complain that the rest of the comp has changed and when we implement change to evolve our game, there's inherent impatience and indignation that it takes time... Absolutely cynical move to do it now, when we've got one home game left for the season so we can 'send him off'. I'd take Goodwin over Brad Green any day. I await the grovelling email in my inbox... Thanks for everything, Simon... This club never really appreciated what you gave to it.

How do you know he wasn't given that opportunity? Maybe SG wanted a clean break.

Nothing has been announced by the club yet, I'm not saying I disbelieve the reports, but we're speculating a lot when there's not much real information in front of us.

The number of people I know who were not going to renew their memberships and the number on here asking how to turn off auto renew, maybe the club saw the writing on the wall. Guess we will have to wait for the club to put out an announcement.

I have been one that wanted the senior coach to leave although I have always said it should be done in a way that preserves dignity and respect. I am not sure the way it has happened meets those requirements. I doubt it.

But in any organisation where outcomes are team efforts and it is hard to individually assign productivity, the person at the top must take responsibility and that person is the senior coach in a football team. In that vein, the senior coach has overseen a trend decline over 2-4 years (it is difficult to trace the beginning of the decline) and the team is nowhere near contending. In a performance-based (win over loss) environment that is unacceptable and the top of the tree has to go.

However, I also think the Board have reacted now to cover their own appalling failures.

And, apropos of the quoted contribution above, the decision to part with the senior coach was probably made when the club worked out how many more members they were going to lose. And when the membership starts tanking so do the sponsors and the Board members might then get a bit uncomfortable while sipping their wines in the warm viewing areas on game day.

In the comms/PR world there is a cohort who are obsessed with controlling the external narrative and they forget about the internal narrative.

Goodness. So true.

After reading all of the above I am inclined to think that Goody was told last night and he has rung Max who would have rung the other Club leaders Viney etc. So I wouldn't be so sure that the players were not aware. The next step would be for Brad to speak to the players this morning. (A function being held this morning has been cancelled due I am presuming to the players not being available and obviously the circumstances.)

As another poster commented that it wouldn't take much for someone to call their family and the "leak" is established.

We are not Carlton and our Board would not act without much consideration and reason. I think some posters on here are not giving them more credit as a decision of this magnitude would have incredible impact not just on the playing group but on club sponsors and supporters. There seems to be a sense of urgency around the decision which to me is more to do with tying up the right coach rather than ineptness which some here assert.

I am looking forward to 2026. We have a great core of mature players and a group of exciting young boys improving and yes "learning" every game.

All supporters should be excited to what the future brings.

I'll never forget the moments in Perth and the joy you bought this football club Simon in 2021.

You can leave with you head held high.

Its best for all parties, thank you.

There are always unintended consequences. The Time to go Goody thread is suck for all eternity on 234 pages.

Since Freo beat us by 92 in the NT last year (our biggest loss since 2016 btw), we've won 11 games and lost 21.

The wins have been against:

  • West Coast x3

  • North x2

  • Richmond

  • Essendon

  • Gold Coast

  • Brisbane (well done)

  • Sydney

  • Freo

That's 4 wins against sides outside the bottom 4 in a year and a half. That's just one better than North Melbourne and Richmond.

The club should do whatever Goodwin wanted. He has earnt the right to go our his way.

Does this include continue coaching next year if he wanted?

Haven’t read much of this yet, but I’m expecting everyone who was asking for him to be sacked to now be unhappy with the process and timing.

Yep, exactly how it went down when the news first came up on the Goody time to go thread. People just love a whinge on here, they were advocating for a sacking for months and now boom...this is bad timing. Just how this place rolls Disco.

Wrong decision.

Not happy about this at all. Deserved more respect than this.

But this is a classic MFC move to do a knee [censored] reaction and condemn us for years in the wilderness by no doubt selecting an unproven coach with a nice PowerPoint presentation. After 5 years of misery the president will quit, an ex player will ride in on a big white horse, the board will barely say anything and we will roam the wilderness again. We have all seen this before. This might be it for me, I think I'm done.

At least I saw a flag in my lifetime, I never thought I would see that, and Goodwin delivered it. Thank you Simon, I will never forget how happy I felt on that day and when I had pride in this club again. If I have to wait the same amount of time for a flag again I will no longer be alive. Thank you, you are a legend of our club and always will be

He was owed a bit more respect agreed and he is and will always be a legend of the club

Looking at performances and results the last 2 seasons, it has not been good enough. I am not sure this is kneejerk

I'm surprised it has happened now.

Would of waited until the end of the season.

I will be forever grateful to Simon Goodwin for ending our 57 year Premiership drought.

Unfortunately, since the highs of 2021 we just couldn't win any finals and the last 2 seasons have seen disaster after disaster.

Anyway, I guess we "ripped the band-aid off early".

It will be interesting who our next coach will be with the options of John Longmire, Adam Simpson, Ken Hinkley, Nathan Buckley, James Hird and others possibly available.

This is a sad day and it's nothing to celebrate.
There was probably a sense of inevitability about the decision but Goody was a key factor in bringing us something that most of us had never experienced before.
His careers should be, and will be, celebrated in time as one of the greats of the Melbourne Football Club.

Give them a minute, gee whiz.

A professional organization has the statements ready to go before executing on significant decisions such as this. This is sadly another indictment on the clubs demonstrable history of poorly controlling communications.

Whoever is leaking information out of the club to the media needs to be thrown in the bin.

And once again this club proves to be the worst communication managers in the AFL.

We can't control a narrative to save our lives.

If two people know its no longer a secret. If Goody was told last night who know who he told. Im sure he told his manager, Im sure he let players and some staff know. His wife knows. People like to talk and it not necessary from inside the board room.

I wonder about how much the angst of players towards Goodwin has played in this decision.

Clearly Petracca was unhappy at the end of 2024 and there have been rumors about Lever etc. Did the board see a player revolt in the making and acted to stem the flow? I suspect the the time table changed at that Monday board meeting after the Saints game. Did Smith and the new CEO attend? Where they involved in last night? It is hard to see the board making this decision without them on board, whatever happens from here will be at the least interesting.

Very difficult to keep something like this under wraps.

Goes deeper than just Goodwin , footy dept, list mgt , culture issues & let’s not kid ourselves they are real as why Trac was [censored] off!

How it’s been handled needs to be questioned and club needs to justify this but reality is his time was up

I wouldn't call these people supporters of the club and I hope they still dont renew. Who needs support like that. Weak.

Yeah because another 10000 lost members added to the 15000 members already gone would be really good for the club

Soon it will be just you holdingup the fort

Great job well done

7 wins from the past 25 games with 15 premiership players tells you everything you need to know

The club would know who keeps feeding TM. It should have ousted them eons ago.

The club should have been ready with a contingency plan in case it was leaked. ie Call a press conf for 9.00 am, which would immediately trigger speculation. But at least the club could control the narrative.

Controlling a narrative and this club just don't go together.

I feel like we've been saying for multiple years that "The guy who leaked it should be marched out". Nothing ever changes. This open vault stuff has been going for so long now that they simply can't put the toothpaste back in the tube.

I don't know what the answer is other than sweeping the board and sending a bunch of staff packing. The number of reviews we've conducted revealed anything with our board governance clearly haven't worked.

Frankly I'm getting sick of paying my membership fees and trusting this board while some self-serving parasite goes and leaks to the media sensitive info on a regular basis. Things like this happen at footy clubs, we all get it. But to have the added sting of looking so amateur and pathetic right now in this landscape again and again and again? I think we've all had enough of it.

Whilst the title of this thread is correct I think it would be better to call it: Thank you Simon.

Whatever position you take on his tenure he brought us a flag in our lifetimes, will forever be a legend of the club and should be respected and revered.

So from me with deep gratitude and respect, thank you Simon for making a dream come true.

I hope you leave understanding how much you mean to the demon faithful.

Dumb timing. Hey, let's sack our premiership coach with two games to go! Would've been better to let him see out the season.

Maybe they've got someone lined up and gave Goody the option to which he decided to go? I haven't read too much online about it, guessing it will be the usual media vulture attack

Imo was always going to happen.

The cost will be frightening

Who ever leaked this is a selfish dog, utterly classless and a profound embarrassment to the club. There are numerous other adjectives required.

Simon you are a stand up guy, thank you forever.

On another note, seems we still have leaks in the club. The first thing PJ stamped out was the leaking to the media and it has been creeping back in over the last couple of years. The fact that scumbag Tom Morris broke this before the club had the opportunity to tell the players is a disgrace, the Board still has issues that sacking a coach won't resolve.

Who knows, Goodwin may have told Morris.

on Morris (who is a dees supporter), said on 9 news before that we have only made finals twice, 2018 and 2021........... lol

Tim Watson also said that the new CEO is not a fan of Goodwin, unsure why or if true but there are murmurings apparently.

PJ held the club together.

  • Thank You Simon Goodwin

As Demon fans, we’ve ridden a rollercoaster of emotions over the decades; the heartbreaks, the near misses, the wooden spoons, and the endless waiting. But through it all, we clung to hope. And then came Simon Goodwin. Before he ever wore red and blue, he was a champion in his own right. A five-time All-Australian, two-time Best and Fairest, and two-time premiership hero and Captain with Adelaide, Simon Goodwin was always destined to lead. When he transitioned from the field to the coach's box, first as an assistant at Essendon, he began shaping a new legacy.

Long ago and far away, the Melbourne Football Club replaced its coach in difficult circumstances after the team suffered a devastating loss. In the aftermath, I penned the following words: “Then came the politics, the intrigue, the axing, the sound of the football world laughing at a club, the circling of the media vultures, the reinvention of history, the anger, the irony, the pathos, the hurt on the face of the president, the dignified departure of the coach, and the determination of the newly appointed caretaker.” Today, we’re back in the same place although one difference here is that the coach who was terminated this time is Simon Goodwin, the man who four years ago

The Charles Dickens novel, A Tale of Two Cities, opens with, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, …”  This phrase highlights many of the significant challenges that humanity encounters in life, ranging from experiencing remarkable highs to living in times of despair. This is a concept that should resonate with all supporters of the Melbourne Football Club this morning as they reflect on its comprehensive 83-point victory over the struggling West Coast Eagles at Marvel Stadium. The outcome proved beyond doubt that they are the worst of clubs and that we are the best of the worst.
