I think there's a fair chance May gets off. Being sent straight to the tribunal doesn't necessarily mean he's screwed. Sometimes it just means that the MRO doesn't feel equipped to make a ruling based on the matrix.

The media commentary around this is disgraceful. But whats new.

Both players had a choice here and they chose not to shirk and run straight at the ball. The fact that Evans govt there a split second beforehand appears to be lost here. As is the fact that May did not deviate, did not brace, did not leave the ground and had his hands in a fwd scooping motion fully expecting to collect the ball.

Why is it only May that has a 'duty of care' ? What about Evans who saw may heading straight for the ball as well. he didn't deviate or brace for contact either.

Why does may have to be the one who stops or deviates? Why couldn't Evans move to one side and try to retrieve the ball with one hand?

I hate the AFL. Every single one of them at AFL house should be sacked.

The incident with Alex Pearce earlier in the year was worse in a number of ways yet he got off. He braced for contact and was clearly not going to get to the ball first. Oh and he left the ground

Steven May is concussed. How can he gives evidence?. Or does that not matter? Surely they should wait 12 days before they hear the case. They could back date the 3 weeks he will get.

The AFL say they take concussion seriously. That is, until they don't.

Surely the May incident was a split second collision where both players are going to win the ball. The ball doesn’t run, it’s pops up and May arrives 0.00008 second late. His shoulder hits Evans high. Accidental.

His eyes are always on the footy.

MRO Christian takes any opportunity to crucify Dees.

If he gets suspended, will we fight it? Surely we must. Dees must stand up.

But the MRO DID make a ruling: Careless, HIgh, Severe Impact. Onus is on the club to prove otherwise.

To be fair the MRO should have made no ruling, as you suggest. As it stands May is 'Guilty unless proven innocent'!

One thing that seems to have been overlooked is that ball was bouncing towards May and away from Evans, meaning Evans was running in the same direction as the ball.

I would think that the player running at the ball would more likely have a focus totally on the ball as it bounces towards him looming larger, while the player running with the ball would be, or should be more mindful of what else was in front of him as well as the ball.

Therefore bravery aside, I would think that Evans was actually more reckless than May, putting himself at risk as well as May.

Neither player if aware of the other, would have noticed any size difference between them and both just went for it.

Fate decided who came off second best but it could have been Steven May, and then it would be a different player up before the tribunal

The more I think about this the less I like it.

Cases sent directly to the Tribunal are where MRO can't decide or it is so severe the penalty should be more than the Matrix accommodates. And usually there is no MRO ruling.

So not many cases are sent directly to the Tribunal. They end up there because their club challenge the MRO ruling. eg Pierce and Xerri whose actions were ruled as May: Careless, High, Severe, 3 weeks. A challenge rarely results in a higher penalty.

But fore some reason the MRO is not following that process. He has made a ruling (3 weeks) AND sent May directly to the Tribunal exposing him to a higher penalty.

It is like he is saying to the Tribunal: I've given him 3 weeks but I reckon it should be more.

When the dust settles the club should complain to the AFL as this seems to be blatantly unfair on May relative to others eg Pierce, Xerri etc.

I think that fractured eye socket was caused by a Tom Hawkins elbow to the face, which of course was deemed accidental.

May said he lost vision in the eye for a while.

Also, within a week or two of Chol breaking May's ribs, I'm pretty sure he planted a knee into the back of someone's head in a similar manner to De Koning - no suspensions resulted. Of course knees to the head aren't a concussion risk though and flying for a mark in this manner is a football act, so play on.
