Jeffo?

Um well yeah!

Out of Petty and Disco i'd prefer Disco forward BUT i dont want to see Disco playing anywhere but the backline - So i voted Petty.

Turner stays back and Petty is out for Jefferson. It won't happen on Sunday but must the next game.

Early on, but the tally in the voter room is favoring Disco forward.

Will be back soon with some live updates.

ITs a polarsing topic. They cannot play the same role. Turner is a more mobile 2 or 3rd tall, who IMV would take JVR's spot.

I think we have better shape with Petty taking the first tall. He isnt a power forward in the mold of Sam Darcy or Ben King. But he competes well enough when the ball is delivered to him properly.

We have nobody else that can play that role as good as Petty right now. People need to understand that. If we come out of a game 50/50 and Petty snags 1-2 goals, its a win for mine.

Jeffo, JVR, AJ, Fullarton are all suitable to the 2nd tall role only - none of them have what it takes to play the role of Petty. Melksham for now takes 3rd tall and then we have the likes of Fritta, Kozzy, Spargo, Chandler, Trac, Langford playing through HF and the pocket.

It depends what you want. If you want the sugar hit of immediate wins, play Turner forward. If you want to win a Premiership, play Turner in the backline as he's going to be replacing one of May or Lever when they retire so best that he hones his defensive craft now.

why would we put our best defender by a country mile fwd, i know our talls are [censored] atm but we just have to persist with them they will come around eventually, season is done anyway so it doesn’t matter. although i think if tmac comes in on sunday the only place he can be is fwd?? playing him fwd decreases his career he still has a year left imo

I think Turner is a better forward, however he is also a gun defender and is really settled. Leave it as it is for the remainder of the year.

If we can find a more reliable KPF next season then Petty and Turner could both be down back.

I think many of us have forgotten how good Petty was as a defender. And yes Turner has been one of our best, I still remember games when Petty was a rock in our backline.

Agree to all points.

This is what I'm essentially asking.

Is Turner really our best defender?

I think May is better. He has been a little out of form of late, but v the pies he reminded me he is our best.

And again it's been so long since Petty played as a defender, people have forgotten how good he is.

He is at least as good as Turner.

So on this assumption, I'm arguing in swapping them, we don't lose anything from our backline and more than likely we will gain more up forward.

Perhaps can I ask you, who you think would be the better fwd?

I feel even without Turner in our backline, we have some stellar talent that many would be envious of and plenty to stop teams scoring against us.

Perhaps this question is way too late given where we are at.

That going forward so to speak, ideally we just find some new replacements. Given the ages of May, Lever and Tmac and the injuries they get, we will probably need both Petty and Turner defending.

I think maybe if we began the year with the roles reversed we could have been a chance for finals.

And it's not a question of hindsight. The writing on the wall with Petty fwd was there last year and it hasn't changed since.

Our fwd line has been an issue for so long, I don't get why much hasn't changed. Our i50s count for so long has been wonderful. And often not the greatest of entries , more than enough for a competent tall to utilize.

We've tried a few things and a few players but always stuck with Petty.

I feel sorry for him. I'm sure he would probably love to be back in his old position. I've recently watched a few of our 2021 games and remembered how good he used to be.

And Goody hasn't had much cattle so to speak to try but he's certainly stuck with a system and players that certainly haven't changed anything.

A super competitive and dynamic fwd we don't have. Well we have Melksham back and it's made a big difference. Fritta was back in form and despite a few brain faded created havoc late in the pies clash.

Imagine if we had a tall that could impact games as well. How many times has Petty kicked three or more goals?

I haven't checked the stats but I'd happily wager it's less than the arguments I win with my better half.

As our premier tall fwd his goal tally is around 0.7 a game.

And yes he often creates a contest but you need more than this. Maybe it was different when we had more crumbers like Spargo and Anb about. And Chin when he was firing.

  • Demonland changed the title to Swapping Petty & Disco's Roles?

Voted Petty.

Petty was surprisingly awful as a key defender in the North and Geelong games before he was permanently moved forward in Gather Round. He's been serviceable as our number 1 key forward but we're not going anywhere if he's our #1 in years to come.

Turner has played his best footy when played exclusively as a key defender this year and should remain there all game, unless we have an injury to a key forward - per the WC game.

i do think turner is our best defender imo he was rated as something like the 12th best defender a couple of weeks ago he has probably gone up few a few at this point, the thing i like about him the most is his composure never makes any mistakes and he has only really played as a full on defender just this year. imagine how good he would be if we never put him fwd after he got that concussion in his first game vs pies maybe? he was one of the best that game. and yes petty is a great defender aswell but we have to many talls down back and we really are just waiting for may and tmac to unfortunately retire, but in saying that i think we have completely failed petty, i wouldnt blame him for leaving him and turner have been swapped around every month for the past year. people forgot he was a key part of 21 which was his first year of playing pretty much all games. the future back 3 as ive said for a long time is adams/howes, petty and turner

The other option to try is see how impactful JVR is as a key backman. If he is just as good as Turner is, i wouldn't mind having a longer term look at Petty / Turner 1 and 2 in forward line and JVR play 2nd tall Backman with Lever as the 3rd interceptor.

We also need to consider:

May / TMac / Lever in backline and
Petty / Turner / Melksham in forward line.

Not sure we have done that this year yet. Its also not conducive to the longer term prosperity of the team given the age profile in the key backs.

Yeah, nah. Play Petty back before dropping him altogether. I think his form back there earlier in the season was pretty good. Poor bloke can't help it if he keeps getting asked to fill holes up the ground because our key forward stocks are all over the shop at the moment.

Disco has forced our hand to leave him back. He may be a good solid forward if played there, but he already might be a star defender!

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
