Look Deezone it was a dangerous tackle free 7 times out of 10. It's a slightly different slant on it because although you can make a case that this call, a 50 and then a very generous 50 at that were terrible, I find that this team constantly finds ways to shoot ourselves in the foot and put ourselves in that position to begin with.

I watched the last 90 seconds of that quarter again just now. It was the most exciting period of the game and it was end to end, you felt like someone was going to come up trumps but I was really hoping we could just get to the end of the quarter. With about 40 seconds left Turner takes a towering mark right on the paint of 50, doubles back and launches us in to the square. At this point I'm honestly thinking that if we don't get a chance on goal that we'll at least get it to ground and lock it down for some seconds. What happens next? Petty contests and does get it to ground, it flicks out to Fritsch who gets into a bit of space and handballs over to a running Oliver who snaps on the left from about 15 to 20 metres out and it lands in the goalsquare where the Port defender marks on the chest. Incredible. Yet at this point with 20 seconds, there is still no thought that Port will even come close to kicking one. What we could have done here alone would have negated any conversation after that.

The rest is history, unlucky free but does Viney really have to play tackle driver then and there? I don't know. 50 may have been harsh but why aren't we just giving the ball straight back? It's these little things that I see time and time again at the death of quarters that really costs us.

    My first thought was ball it up. You see them paid for a dangerous tackle but he had literally no prior opportunity to get rid of it, but for whatever reason they were hot on it then. Funny they weren't hot on it earlier in the game when a port player, can't remember who, was given an eternity to dispose of it, didn't correctly dispose of it but somehow that was play on.

    As for the 50, I hate to say it but that was Viney's fault. Players know, and it felt so much the same as Kozzie's brain fart last week. We give up a lot of stupid 50m penalties.

    If the umpires are going to be so pedantic on 50m penalties, then they really do need to pay every one. Earlier in the game against Port, they quite obviously failed to get it back to Max on the full and no 50 - it's infuriating.

    I'm very quickly getting to the view that the league need to bring it back to 15m forward of centre and/or as a blanket rule, except for the most egregious of offences.

    50m penalties hand goals to oppositions as did that crazy decision to give Port a second shot on goal. Games shouldn't regularly be decided by umpires.

    Before anyone says it wasn't the umpires fault we kicked umpteen behinds, what they did was kept the scoreboard pressure going against us - for a team that has these issues it is a big factor. We're well capable of kicking accurately when we start hitting our straps, just look at the second half Vs the first against the Swans. It's not just missing goals or not, also impacts marking and passing for us and the opposition.

    Keep in mind that the 50m penalty evolved from the 15m penalty because coaches decided that giving away a 15m penalty was worth it, similar to a "professional foul". I suspect if we went back to the 15m penalty, the same would happen again.

    Furthermore, I suspect about half the 50m penalties given away likely result from breaches of the "stand" rule. I'd get rid of that rule altogether which would immediately remove many 50m penalties.

    Rozee, that was the one. It was in our forward 50 and evern the FF commentators mentioned he was given all day to get rid of it and failed to dispose of it correctly.

    It's those moments that infuriate when they are hot on Jack with his incident, there has to be better consideration on how they make their decisions.

We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

      I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

      The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
