How about giving the public a choice? There are umpteen BS shows at the moment. How about balancing all the BS with one class analytical show? (Might not get many Pies supporters watching I’d imagine - but who gives a S about them?). If you only have Shiite on TV you’ll either switch off or continue to accept Shiite. Time for a change for the better.

I actually think the lack of this type of content is deliberate.

It's expensive to make compared to the usual boys club bravado [censored]. You need intelligent people, and media outlets will have to bid for them. Many of the genuinely astute people are already in coaching, and they probably don't do "media" as naturally.

Also, the AFL wants to control all the media revenue.

To get access to footage to use in this type of analysis costs a fortune. It's possible that the secondary camera angles not shown on the broadcast are not even available to anyone outside the official broadcaster.

All the real stats are locked behind Champion Data, a company that is majority owned by the AFL. We get a smattering of BS stats that have been published for years and some extra stuff that sounds fancy but isn't useful published via the AFL app etc.

Non-accredited AFL media can't access this stuff, and the AFL won't accredit direct competitors taking revenue of the main broadcaster.

So in effect, the AFL locks down all footage and data that is needed for analysis, restricts it to the big paying broadcast partner, and suffocates any competition that it won't receive revenue from.

As a result, the official broadcaster doesn't actually need to provide a high quality product to compete in the market. They have a monopoly.

the fact that the afl has been shutting down 3rd party content providers because they don't want the footage to be available and analysed says volumes

there's every chance that jeff's channel could be the next to get a cease-and-desist letter from head office

I’d suggest there’s plenty of astute ex coaches out there who could provide analysis during matches

The Broadcaster already has the vision so that doesn’t appear an issue

If the AFL are majority owner of the data then it shouldn’t be difficult to access

I think your last point is the most pertinent, they actually don’t need to provide the analysis because they’re doing just fine with boofheads talking nonsense with a heavy smattering of gambling ads in between. The AFL product has stopped getting stronger and that falls on head office. Looking at how they’re operating it’s no wonder nothing changes. They’re a bunch of fat cats holding 4 Aces and they’re happy eating expensive lunches and putting out the occasional spot fire. Basically I see them as a bunch of under performing middle management types who got lucky with the big gig. Like elsewhere in corporate Australia it’s the shocking productivity of these types that see us drifting sideways as a country.

I'm talking about the analysis like white explained, there is a couple that do it and I know this one waffles on at times but Brereton is good at that, but agree with you about the rest.

Ross Lyon did a press conference recently where he got a bit snippy with a reporter, because he knew that the reporter's knowledge of the game was miles behind his own. My point is, someone like Lyon would be fantastic at explaining some of the final points of the game. Obviously, he has other things on his mind at the moment but there should be plenty of people like him out there.

The Roos will need a near-perfect performance to trouble a Collingwood side sitting atop the ladder.

    The two teams competing at the MCG on Sunday afternoon have each traversed a long and arduous path since their previous encounter on a sweltering March evening in Sydney a season and a half ago. Both experienced periods of success at various times last year. The Demons ran out of steam in midseason while the Swans went on to narrowly miss the ultimate prize in the sport. Now, they find themselves outside of finals contention as the season approaches the halfway mark. The winner this week will remain in contact with the leading pack, while the loser may well find itself on a precipice, staring into the abyss. The current season has presented numerous challenges for most clubs, particularly those positioned in the middle tier. The Essendon experience in suffering a significant 91-point loss to the Bulldogs, just one week after defeating the Swans, may not be typical, but it illustrates the unpredictability of outcomes under the league’s present set up.

On Sunday, he provided the leadership that was needed to face up to the reigning premier and top of the ladder Brisbane Lions on their home turf and to prevail after a slow start, during which the hosts led by as much as 24 points in the second quarter. Titus O’Reily is normally comedic in his descriptions of the football but this time, he was being deadly serious. The Demons have come from a long way back and, although they still sit in the bottom third of the AFL pack, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel as they look to drive home the momentum inspired in the past four or five weeks by Max the Magnificent who was under such great pressure in those dark, early days of the season.

  • CASEY: Southport

    The Southport Sharks came to Casey. They saw and they conquered a team with 16 AFL-listed players who, for the most part, wasted their time on the ground and failed to earn their keep. For the first half, the Sharks were kept in the game by the Demons’ poor use of the football, it’s disposal getting worse the closer the team got to its own goal and moreover, it got worse as the game progressed. Make no mistake, Casey was far and away the better team in the first half, it was winning the ruck duels through Tom Campbell’s solid performance but it was the scoreboard that told the story.
