@Demon Dynastyย I think Goodwin would be more suited to the role of GM instead of Richardson.

But I doubt heโ€™d want to stick around as GM after being removed as coach, and I donโ€™t think any prospective coach would want him hanging around either.

But Richo should also be on the chopping block.

Um, actually you did: โ€œToย think that you are privy to what the players actually think of Goody just because you attend training is borderline delusional.โ€ unless of course you want to split hairs and use the โ€œborderlineโ€ escape clause.

No. I said, "to THINK that is borderline delusional".ย

Not, "YOU are delusional".ย

A clear and obvious difference.ย

But to get back on topic, some great discussion on here with some thoughtful, unbiased analysis of our coach and team which is refreshing to hear on a forum that has become increasingly anti-negative anything MFC related.ย

If the job was vacant today โ€ฆ the media list would be something likeย

John Longmireย

Adam Simpsonย

Jaymie Grahamย

James Hird

Leon Cameron

not sure Nathan Buckley would even raise an eyebrow!!ย

I donโ€™t know anything of Jamie Graham but itโ€™s a hard no to the rest.

Our list deserves a look at a different style of play. (So do us fans.)

I can absolutely see the merit of it from a purely competitive position but contest and defence is the least sexy thing in AFL.

A very large portion of this board is died on supporters lamenting our boring and negative style.

ย

The club will have a very rare opportunity this off season: they will have three proven coaches all available.

Longmire

Hinkley (yes - he has guided Port to multiple Prelims)

Simpson

I really love Goodwin for where he got us but the club really needs to think about whether he is right to do a mini-rebuild and get us back to contention.

In my view we are two seasons away, with the right drafting and player additions, from playing finals again. Unless Goodwin magically changes how he has coached for the past nine seasons, he should move on.

We definitely can't sack him. I don't think you can sack a Premiership coach. But hopefully he does the right thing for the club. Whether that is commit to changing what he does, or stepping aside.

Dude, it is obviously implied. If you're going to insult someone, just own it.

We definitely can an should if the situation becomes dire. No one person is bigger than the club.

I keep thinking of The Last Dance, and MJโ€™s insistence on dominating the opposition. We donโ€™t play with an energy and drive to dominate. Thereโ€™s no fire, no passion, no drive, no wins.

If weโ€™re dishing up Sundayโ€™s effort 2 in every 3 weeks for the rest of the year and win 4 games for the year, then I think you definitely can.

gotta have a team that plays together to succeed

Some interesting analysis on the Dees and Goodwin from a Carlton fan youtuber who has branched out into analysis of other teams.

Might be of interest to some:

I liked the part where he compared Goodwin to AI. Spot on IMO.

Jesus Christ he's literally just summarising bigfooty rants at high speed.

Can't get excited about any of those. They all peaked within their first two seasons, Hinkley's teams choked in finals and Longmire's teams choked in Grand finals, and Simpson left the Eagles in the worst condition of any club since 2013.

I think we need a different mix of Assistant coaches and a new GM Football rather than a Goodwin replacement.

Wouldn't mind Craig Jennings back but unfortunately they seemed to fall out in 2019.ย  He is eccentric and a bit quirky but imv was very good for us and previously, WBD.ย

He has been at GWS as defence coach and now Midfield/Transition coach.ย

ย

As an aside the GWS coaching mix and structure is really interesting with high calibre incumberns:ย ย https://www.gwsgiants.com.au/teams/coaching-staff

Thanks number 31, it's sad to say because he's an English Carlton fan, but I agree with almost his entire rant.ย

I cannot understand how us fans and the club are putting up with this rubbish.ย

I was shocked his contract was renewed and wonder if we'd still be putting up with this mediocrity if we hadn't pulled away from the Dogs in 2021?ย  Does that victory condemn us to suffer an underperforming poorly coached team forevermore?

How bad will it have to get before the new executives take action?ย ย

simpson? absolultey not.
Hird??? that would see me ringing up in protest and melting membership cards. not a chance.

buckley no

hinkley no

longmire i would probably be keen onย

but tbh id rather a new coach with fresh ideas. maybe a hinkley or longmire understudy

Well...........

There's probably any number of preconcepts to think this guy ought to be some cod eating [censored]....ย  ย but they might be the same sort of preconceptions that ought to suggest we're at least a top 8 team with street creds !!ย

And you'd be wrong I think in both instances. Imho.

I kept waiting for the moment where the viewer could be forgiven for ridiculing this narration but sadly it never came. I can't help but feel the vast majority of what he said was entirely valid.

I find it always interesting to listen to non-Melbourne folk , who do have some decent understanding of the game , analyse and discuss our 'great' club.ย

He may not have always hit a nail on its head but neither was he unfortunately ever far from the mark.ย

Yes , it was an opinion piece.ย  We all have one.

There were any number of facts though within that ought to be concerning for many of us.

He's dead right about Clarksons mob giving a master-class in how to dismantle us. And we ought to care as I'm bloody sure other FDs were scribbling notes.ย  And London to a brick we won't be much changed when we meet these other clubs.

We're 2 for zip atm.ย  We might go 3 and O and then joy of joys the Kitties at their litterland !!ย  ย We are struggling for traction. We might not get ANY !!

Back to that Bluebagger weathermanย  ...ย

Is he just reiterating many of our grievances??ย  Quite possibly.ย  Does that make them any less valid ? That's a No for me.ย

Whilst too early to panic we should be taking note of all icebergs and where the life-rafts are. Not seeing blue skies ahead.

Now some will dismiss any and all seeming negativity as just plain bad ju-juย  but it'sย  not me creating it....ย  it's that lot out there on the other side of the boundary line( plus a few in the box )... the ones running around.ย

One of the few teams we've beaten in recent times, the Suns , are actually favourites currently... and on OUR turf !! That's not good.

Why do I feel like I'mย  on the Minnow... again

GO Dees...ย  please... get going..ย  start whenever you like...ย  ( now is good ๐Ÿ‘ย  )ย

ย

Longmire has always impressed me with his tactical responses in game and

I think he has a good analytical footy mind and a ruthless desire to win (except for recent grand finals!)

He had his recent team playing fast, stylish, skillful, exciting football where you know the whole scoring goals aspect hasn't been neglected in favour of pure "contest and defence".ย ย

I also hear straight talking sense from him and not inane management speak.

Players cop a deserved earful from him when they are playing badly and not doing as they've been instructed.ย  He doesn't need to constantly wrap them all up with love like delicate likkel lambs.ย  But he seems to have natural leadership with humour and people skills when required.ย ย

Unfortunately I expect he's got better options than driving out to Casey fields most days.ย ย

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterdayโ€™s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown andย  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
