Not sure what’s happened to Fritsch over summer. As someone who’s watched the match sim, practice match and Round 1 in their entirety, I don’t remember him even having a moment. Worrying signs.

I thought he had a low season last year

He seems to be on fire or not at all lately.

Great signs from Jeffo and a few others.

A few may being deleting some old comments re Jeffo! Didn't have a stack of it but a strong debut

Not sure, i reckon he comes out for turner next week

Nice snap early and a couple of tackles in the second Q but not much aside from that

They smashed us on the counter-attack.  Where as we had to work hard for scores

A runner or 2 short in the conditions (it had to be AJ or Jeffo, not both)

Other than that, we played quite well but just came up short

Not much to like beyond the 2 goals, surprisingly strong defensive efforts and clean skills you reckon

I could be wrong, but I counted seven set shots with a total outcome of 1.1.

Isn't he suspended?

Yeah you said he played his part on the loss?

The MRO may have but not Kozzi. his bump was shoulder height and completely fine aside from some [censored] falling over

Really missed May, McVee and Pickett. A step too far with all the injuries/unavailable. Sure, lots to be positive about, but a loss is a loss.

2 through injuries and 1 through a dumb act on ground and not for the first time. He needs to own that because he would have been a point of difference today

Frustrating loss

We clearly match up very well with GW$ - or they match up well with us - as it’s always a thriller

I understand why they’ve made the move, but I really don’t like Fritsch as a high half forward; he’s our best goal kicker and having him outside the f50 is a waste

At a critical time later in the match, that Lever non-kick into the middle to Viney ... not the first time.

Honourable loss - which is a term I hate.

Kids were good. XL, like the duke last year, has the early doors signs of a smart skilful player.

AJ was good. Physical.

Trac and Clarry will be better for the run too.

Didn't lose anything down back with May out.

Fitness must be pretty good for both teams. Heavy ground and no pickle juice in sight.

If this is the benchmark for our season, we'll be alright

Have to be happy with that. Gave great effort and showed good signs all day.

clearly ran out of legs in the last but that’s what happens when you play a team that’s already played. Thanks Laura and Andrew.

Lindsay and Windsor are stars. Langford has a lot to learn.

Team looks much happier this year.

Typical.

Just knew the moment we missed that goal and they started their transition they would score.

Games have been lost so many times off the back of this. How have we not rectified is beyond me.

We were out of gas 'Dazz'.

...not having a game last  week was always going to play out for us this way when we weren't far enough in front.

Agree. The fluffed kicks, taking the wrong option, Johnson sprays his kick, GWS clean, untouched to Keeffe who hammers it over the goal umpires head. So typically Melbourne. Our skills are sub standard, we are a mile off it.

Agreed.

Spewing to not get the points after that performance. A lot to like though, XL, AJ and Pettys performances impressed me.

I assume you watched the game, 5 touches 2 clangers

the second goal was a hilarious mongrel

Didn’t mark anything but was a tough wet game. He competed ok but not sure he’ll keep his spot over Turner

Argh, that one stings. GWS' transition game opened us up a few too many times and was definitely the key factor in their win. I love watching Toby Greene play, but damn do I hate when he plays against us.

As far as the debutants go, I really wasn't expecting that sort of game from XL, especially considering he only had half a pre season.  Jeffo took his chances and both of the Werribee lads had some decent moments. I'd expect that all of them hold their spots going into round 2. Here's hoping that Langford gets a full game next week

Awesome to see Petracca back doing what he does in the midfield. He looks set for a big season.

I thought our defensive trio of Petty, Lever and TMac stood up really well for most of the game. Bowey also played his best game in at least two years.

Roo and Fritsch were well held (although Fritsch did a good job negating Taylor for most of the game)

Yea. I'll recant what I said. I was going to say when you have form the chips fall that way but that doesn't make him wrong. Fair call.

I'm playing the blame game when in actual fact we played well and just lost to a serious team.

Rather AJ.

Fritsch offers no defensive pressure & was disappointing.

Van rooyen tried but didnt offer a lot.

Liked the debutantes.

We had that game until that final play.

How we could let that ball travel from coast to coast with no pressure was disappointing.

Max Gawn needs to develop a banana kick, he misses too many of those 15-20 m with an angle. You just can't miss those opportunities and he misses many of those.

And I so wish he'd done his classic run wide of the man on the mark and really roost thst shot on goal from 50 in the last - his conversion rate on those is solid.

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
