Clubs will try to trade players with bad contracts and attach a prospect with it just to get the salary off the books and then use that money more  constructively. Surprised it doesn’t happen more in the AFL.

It's not the trade that irks, it is that somehow it was Geelong who could afford it with all their other signings like Cameron etc at the time.

It is time the league had transparency with player and coaching contracts. It probably never happen as too many clubs and players have a clear interest in keeping up the secrecy to keep dodgey practices.

Agree with coaching contracts.

I immediately think of the Brett Ratten situation at St Kilda where he signed a new deal and then was sacked within months.

The AFL should have should have intervened before it was announced. Shocking treatment.

Was much easier to buy property prior to 87 and 99. Property was 3 times your income, now it's 8 times your income.

i supsect bazalenka has earned more $$ with his endorsement deals than he has as an afl player as yet

Jeremy Cameron became a neighbour of my (Dee-tragic, so now-revolted) sister. Exposed to this personal story, I diss Geelong on this subject with the best of them. However, it's drawing a long bow calling these properties farms, and the wealthy, Geelong-ish squattocracy 'farm' connotes. They are properties that come in the cost range that I reckon most established and/or high profile players' properties are in, and, like them, provide 'only' residence, albeit with the more land that a regional precinct like greater Geelong can offer, at lesser cost-per-area than Melbourne, and even the Peninsula, can. And, yes, the 'acreage' lifestyle and the coast can be attractions, but these aren't under-the-table-engineered by GFC.

And I still hate Geelong. Quite a bit, actually.

How do you know that?

In any event, it's not hard to disguise an "under the table" transaction by use of payments at discounted rates of property titles to third party trusts or related parties. If you can beat the price of your opponents by say $250k then it's a hell of an advantage from a price perspective, let alone reducing your TPP salary cap figures.

Not suggesting that any particular club would be inclined to do such a thing ... but ... meow.
