We can't hide him forever, hopefully we find a way to get him on our list this year.

I wonder if he is part of a 'keep Kozzie at the Dees' campaign ...

According to Roy the campaign was and still is unnecessary. He says Kozzie had no intentions of leaving us, nor does he now. And he added the line that I’ve heard from at least a dozen people at the Club just in this last month… don’t believe everything you read in the media.

Comment wasn't based on media reports as I believe very little in the media!

I was musing about a favourite player.   I want to keep them all happy 🙃

so you didn't believe their reports the Kozzie, Tracc and Clarrie would not be playing for MFC this year. 😮

Twain never played but he's a well regarded junior coach and mentor.

One of his more successful proteges is the recently drafted "Huckleberry" Finn O'Sullivan.

Not to mention the fact that from the same playbook, last year they got the Duke with pick No.7 in the National Draft .

True thing Luci, though they tend to be the older ‘proper’ journos who are either marginalised or have been put out pasture by their previous employers.

Agreed.

I give credence to 'older' The Age scribes eg Ryan, Gleeson, Niall but as you say there aren't many left that get given a voice.

Even that rag went downhill when new owners brought in McClure and Cornes.  How the editors allowed some of the stuff written about us and our players during the off season is beyond me.

I assume McClure and Cornes are there to appeal to a wider audience, not that I think they'll find it amongst The Age readership. Perhaps the shock jock style is aimed at the younger audience. A bit like having the Whately and Robbo combo, with Robbo there for the nuffies as well as the younger viewer.

We haven’t 86d Shane up ‘til this point in time, why on earth would we do it now? He’s the fittest he’s ever been, he’s in the best shape of his career, he’s mentally not just well but very well (even if he’d not said it himself you can tell by his demeanour), and he has worked SO hard this preseason. Both Selwyn and Goody are really pleased with the effort he’s making.

Many on here have said let’s see how he goes with a full preseason under his belt. Therefore… let’s! 😃

I'm a believer in Shane's skillset and think at his best he's a best 22 player.

The question marks I have are how much more time do you give a bloke who unfortunately has a body that doesn't seem to stand up to AFL footy consistently?

The fact he isn't in the main group and still effectively only completing 'run-throughs' is also a worry to me.  I have no idea why and would be very curious to know why when his last game was mid August.

Did he need any off season surgery?  Or if its fitness based, why wouldn't he have kept up his training regime to ensure preseason day 1 that he's good to go with the main group?

Is there any chance 'Ghostwriter' you could maybe get some details how he is tracking?

Because he’s 28, has had a nothing career to now and is one injury away from the end. Roy George on the other hand is young, energetic, electric and if you’re risking a list spot I’d go with Roy everyday of the week.

McAdam is thirty in May.

How about Spargs, still on one leg? Will he make it back for season starter. Could go on the LTI list.

We will fit Uncle George in, there must be a plan, a cunning plan.

Vfl last year:

McAdam: 11d, 4 tackles, 4 marks, 2 goals

Roy: 10d, 1 tackle, 2 marks, 1 goal

I understand we are all frustrated with Shane’s first year but he’s contracted for 2 more and at least deserves the benefit of the doubt for this year to go out and play his best.

Similarly Roy has talent but he didn’t even lock himself in to the Casey team last year. Assuming he’s even worthy of a lost spot is a stretch at this stage.

he's not a lost boy anymore!

i think we easily forget the situation that mcadam was coming out of, where he couldn't ever get his body 'right'

this is our second summer to work with him and i'm confident our tailored program will suit him

we've generally speaking taken a couple of seasons to get imports into the position where they can impact for us

similarly, it's why i'm interested to see how billings goes for us in 2025

Roy had a limited pre season if any while Shane was in an AFL system though injured.

Bit hard to compare them on a couple of games given the above.

As I said if I was risking a list spot I’d go with George. I can’t see McAdam becoming anything for us. Happy to be proven wrong. George has a unique skill set and whilst he to is a long shot I think he offers more upside.

Shane’s on an individual training schedule, totally separate from the others and has been since preseason began. It’s fitness-based. He said this has always been an issue for him and this is the furthest he’s come in terms of achieving peak fitness (and with that comes the other benefits in the form of increased confidence and faith in himself). This is exactly where he’s at.

Therefore the fact that he wasn’t in attendance from the start with the 1 - 4 year players is a non-issue. He’s on a tailored program, so it hasn’t been necessary for him to be training at the same time and place as the others.

Selwyn and Tom (Couch) and assistants have got him in the great condition he’s in by catering for his needs, so to speak. I don’t know the specifics and I’d never ask, but what I do know is that whatever they’re doing… it’s working.

He’s also in a great place mentally as well. He admits he’s been down on himself in the past. He’s turned a corner and it shows in everything he does. I don’t need to ask him how he’s going, he’s keen to share and does so more and more with every session.

Bottom line: He has been working just as hard and for just as long as the others.

  • Thank You Simon Goodwin

As Demon fans, we’ve ridden a rollercoaster of emotions over the decades; the heartbreaks, the near misses, the wooden spoons, and the endless waiting. But through it all, we clung to hope. And then came Simon Goodwin. Before he ever wore red and blue, he was a champion in his own right. A five-time All-Australian, two-time Best and Fairest, and two-time premiership hero and Captain with Adelaide, Simon Goodwin was always destined to lead. When he transitioned from the field to the coach's box, first as an assistant at Essendon, he began shaping a new legacy.

Long ago and far away, the Melbourne Football Club replaced its coach in difficult circumstances after the team suffered a devastating loss. In the aftermath, I penned the following words: “Then came the politics, the intrigue, the axing, the sound of the football world laughing at a club, the circling of the media vultures, the reinvention of history, the anger, the irony, the pathos, the hurt on the face of the president, the dignified departure of the coach, and the determination of the newly appointed caretaker.” Today, we’re back in the same place although one difference here is that the coach who was terminated this time is Simon Goodwin, the man who four years ago

  • REPORT: West Coast

The Charles Dickens novel, A Tale of Two Cities, opens with, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, …”  This phrase highlights many of the significant challenges that humanity encounters in life, ranging from experiencing remarkable highs to living in times of despair. This is a concept that should resonate with all supporters of the Melbourne Football Club this morning as they reflect on its comprehensive 83-point victory over the struggling West Coast Eagles at Marvel Stadium. The outcome proved beyond doubt that they are the worst of clubs and that we are the best of the worst.
