Draft day!

My order of preferred outcomes, based on the rumoured candidates for our picks -

1. Langford and Tauru

2. Langford and Allan

3. Tauru and Allan

4a. Langford and Lindsey

4b. Tauru and Lindsey

Go Dees.

agreed - dialogue and rumour mill has Dees selections as… (depending on availability)

At 5: Langford … if already picked… then Tauru

At 9: Tauru … if already picked by MFC or another club …  look at either Allan or Lindsay

In my initial post I also forgot to reference Kenterfield, though he's far more speculative than the previous group (including Jefferson).

Let's hope he can saddle up for some good performances this year.

I'd be happy with any of the top 5 picks leaving out (Ashcroft) for our first pick

Lalor, Smith, Draper, Langford, FOS

2nd pick:

Allan, Hotton, Tauru, Hynes, Berry preferred ahead of;

Lindsey, Smillie, Reid but really happy with any of them TBH

Pick 83 NFI: Cochrane, Dennis, Salzburg, Andrew, a JT Special

Berry looks a better prospect than a number of the other ones talked about.

Wish you could do the ‘NBA style draft and then trade an hour later for value’ - you could turn Allan into Berry and Hynes.

Can be brutal though. This Kobe guy looks rubbish, lets trade him to the Lakers

Moving onto Oliver and Petracca, we don't exactly know where they'll be in 12 months time, both from an on-field perspective and from an output perspective (personally, I'm confident Oliver will be a the Dees as it stands; I'm no where near as certain on Petracca)

Hopefully Pickett, Clarry and Petracca go nowhere.
Already read far too many Phantom Drafts and threads this year, couldn't handle even more first round picks this time next year.

Obviously my tounge was planted in my cheek.

I'm just thinking back to our picks like Lucas cook, Morton & toumpas

If you really want to feel bad how about jarman sitting out the a dra so he didn't have to go to us and instead landed at Hawthorn the following year.

I've often thought we would have won the flag if jarman played with us in 1987.

Still rankles.

I dont have any knowledge about the juniors, and not much to offer in terms of which players we should pick.

But in terms of needs I'd go:

Pick 5:

- Tallish hard at it mid with elite foot skills, great tank, reasonable leg speed, can get forward and kick goals (not necessarily a hybrid in the tracc mold, like say kolt) and is ready to play AFL footy in 2025

Comparison players: Zac Bailey, Bont, Jarrod Berry.

Pick 9:

- Outside mid, half back flanker, wing with proven super elite foot skills, speed and x factor. Left footer a bonus.

Comparison players: Warner, Nick Daicos, Judd McVee, Gulden, Kiddy Coleman.

IMHO, we don't need another tall forward - and i don't think we'll use 5 or 9 on one.

Elite ball users who can open up zones and not turn the pill over are the priority.

Langford and Lindsay both tick off the attributes I was hoping we'd target.

Fantastic result.

Langford looks big enough to play AFL footy next season.

And I just love we picked up two quality left footers.

I’ll also assume Tauru is gone by our first pick.

Pick 5- Langford. Good left peg and great contested mark. I think we will draft for right now as much as the future and I think Langford makes most sense to have an impact next year. Very versatile, could interchange with trac, play mobile half forward or take Sparrows spot. Could even play a game or two instead of fritter if he refuses to work hard enough again this year.

Pick 9- Lindsay will play half back and is a great kick of the ball. Can play outside mid in few years.

There’s heaps of others I like but I think these two would improve us significantly next year.
If not them I’d still like a pair that combine ability to play forward and back as well as in the middle with contested marking and kicking skills.

Would you trade up with a future pick and our last pick to get Dodson?

The only thing we can trade is downgrading our future 2nd for someone else’s future 2nd, but even if we could, no. He’s a basketballer whose strength is racking up touches. But without the skills to really do a lot of with it or the elite movement of Luke Jackson. He’s very Stef Martin. Useful, but the not the kind of ruck I really value

Lots of people will be pretty pleased with how that worked out.

I suspect most disappointment will be with St Kilda's Battle compensation taking Alix Tauru from us. I'm going to hope that it works out a bit like getting Van Rooyen after missing out on Mac Andrew.

I was thinking about this last night actually Little Goffy after jumping on the Tauru bandwagon.

The only comfort is that I'm still thankful the Saints had a red hot crack in the last game of the year not only defeating the scum but also seeing them leap frog us on the ladder.

If they lost that match and picked up Langford and Tauru I would have been filthy.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
