    Would’ve thought Sparrow just needs to focus on developing his game. Has stalled and is at risk of not being a regular firsts player next year unless he improves.

    Rivers and McVee are potential future leaders. Chandler and Sparrow not really. Leaders need to be 'in the play' more, and they often aren't. Ideally JVR stays less in the ruck ... so he wouldn't be in the play too much. (Yeah, I know Neita was a forward, but he was the exception as a leader.)

    I'm interested in why you see McVee as a future leader. What's the evidence for this? I see a great on-field talent, but that doesn't always translate to being leadership material. You could put together a great team of players none of whom had any leadership interest or capability. Players such as Gary Ablett Sr, Bruce Doull, Buddy Franklin and Dustin Martin were all greats of the game, but none were leaders.

    that may be how we as supporters see it, but there's no doubt he's looked at as an emerging leader at the club if you hear players and coaches talk about him

    Needs to lose some muscle and focus on speed and endurance..

    I see him as a future leader too.

    A big reason is arguably the most common trait of leaders is they leave no stone unturned in terms of realising their potential.

    Judd was on the rookie list, so not some uber talented, highly rated high draft pick.

    My understanding is he was no lock to stay on the rookie list, let alone the senior list. He was at the crossroads.

    During the 2023 preseason break Judd took it on himself to do extra work to get AFL fit, build his tank and increase his acceleration.

    On the back of that work he was a shock 2023 round one selection. 

    He has been a best 22 lock since.

    Another big tick in terms of leadership is IIRC he wasn't a defender as a junior or at Casey.

    Yet that is where he was selected round one 2023 (and since).

    We needed a half back flanker with good kicking skills, they identified Judd as having the right attributes and defensive discipline and he stepped up and made the role his own.

    Clarry needs to simply focus on getting back to his best, whereas Trac needs to simply focus on footballing matters……….plenty of time to worry about his brand after retiring

    He was dropped to Casey at the back end of the year on top of injuries to Oliver and Petracca and midfield depth at an almighty low.

    Less focus on leadership and more focus on actually getting a kick.

    Happily trade him next year if he's still picking up 12-15 touches a game and having zero influence like he did this year.

    I'm guessing a leadership group of 5

    I think bringing in Nathan Jones allows Viney and the rest of the mids to fall under his tutelage/leadership and focus more on pure footy

    While Gawn takes the wider role of bringing in 4 others of that younger dem. Maybe Lever too.

     

    Rivers VC is a big call though. Interesting!

    Just shows, how poor the leadership was in the older group.  There was little offered,  poor decisions earlier,  not the fault of those particular players.

      There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors.
