Been saying the same thing since 22 and agree with you if you have ever heard Nick Riewoldt, Dunstall and Dermott Brereton they talk about the figure 8 and as a forward you keep running your opponent around even when the ball is nowhere near them and when the ball is coming down towards the forward line you run even harder and then lead. 

The one thing I hope next year is we don't have every forward  player over the wing area and leave a some players back so your opposition cannot build a wall on the H/B line all alone and then keep bombing in it to their forward line.

It is a good pattern, just get it done, Dees.

Surely as well as quick decisive movement into the F50, delivery to moving targets (or into space ahead of moving targets) instead of to the tops of the heads of a stagnant pack of talls and smalls who want to take speccies is needed.

Movement to create space behind even if you know the ball won’t necessarily come your way is positive team work. 
 

If you always do what you’ve always done, you will always get what you always got.  And that hasn’t worked over the past three seasons. So ….?

Maybe we only recruited him to stop Kosi instinctively attempting a speccy at every contest.

...Although it was more of a reaction to Melkshams ACL and the need to fill the role he'd carved out for himself pre injury.

Despite being an injury prone player and never getting more than 15 games a season, he’s still good for 1.5 goals a game.

I guess our logic at the time of trading for him was that he was a due for an injury free year, he’d get a weaker defender than Pickett and he’d manage a 30 goal season in 2024 

I guess that logic still applies for next year.

Tall forwards is the least of our problems - nor most teams'. There were more than a few clubs in the finals without a really dominate KPF.

It's a misconcetion on Demonland that JVR is being wasted in the ruck. He's clearly our second best tap ruckmen. Anyone who thinks we shouldn't play him there to prevenent injury might need to look at the skipper.

Forward connection didn't work for us in the 2023 finals because all our forwards and even back up forwards were out injured.

Kicking to a pack in front of goal? Has anyone watched Jake Lever kick to Max Gawn when we needed a goal to win the minor premiership and go on to win the proper one

Seriously naive and lazy take. Chaplin is our best line coach and respected in the league and he is coaching leading patterns and ball movement. You don’t need to be a ‘former AFL forward’ to be able to understand them, apply them in a team context, and coach them to blokes to execute on the weekend.

I am with you Wrecker and get infuriated when the D/L ers IMO completely disregard JVR’s contribution in the ruck.

Firstly they underestimate his worth just writing it off. He is by the Flemington straight easily the best second rock forward on our list till the end of 2023. 

How this will be in 2024 is anyone’s guess. With Campbell and Johnson I would expect he might go back a peg or two. But he competes he scratches he palms he bodies and up forward I believe he engaged himself into the game more than if he was just a forward. 

He is not great at the centre bounce but should get more time playing behind the ball. 

I think he might kick 40 goals  in 2025 rucking or no rucking.

I think he needs to start grabbing some marks one grab and it will become a lot easier plus his confidence will soar. We can hope it this year!!

Have we replaced another fwd who hasn't played for reasons I don't want to discuss?

As talented as Fritta is, he can often be out bodied.

Tmac is no longer a fwd option.

So why do you think this isn't an issue?

And I think Jvr is still developing and has had to play in the middle often.

So who do we really have?

I can tell you in one single point how the 2nd highest goal kicker in the history of AFL got 90% of his goals and here it is:

“when he saw his team mate with the ball, he led away from him, not to him and the ball was passed in front of him as he jogged in for an easy chest mark.”

I agree it is not rocket science, just utilising your assets, with a few basic plays. The chaos goals can still be scored occasionally.

Ex AFL experienced forward catching the forward line … that might be helpful … just a thought.

I've said this before but Chaplin coached the highest scoring forwardline in the comp in 2018, last time he was a forwards coach...

Agreed, No it does not. Being a good coach is more about your ability to build connections and clearly articulate your message. Fages never even played AFL and is now a premiership coach.

There is an art to forward craft that's takes a while to learn, but from what's reported Chaplin is working well and with a gameplan change it will make his job easier, I have advocated for a seasoned coach so give him a chance.

 

Got to believe AJ, Big Jacob and the Rizzler will return us to goal scoring glory.
