he and ayres are two of the best and most successful 'lower level' coaches over the last 30 years

    By the same logic, does this mean head coaches can only be sourced from former players who played forward, back and midfield? Seems like it would be a very limited pool of applicants…

    I really rate Basset and would be thrilled if we added him to our coaching panel.

    The kind of calibre of assistant coach with the credentials to have been pursued by the Eagles and the wisdom to turn them down 🤣

    Jnrmac to be fair he did coach the Power fwd line during his 8 year stint there and who knows who else is available, I’m sure the coaching brethren would be across who and what is available.

    Exactly - it is nonsense to think coaches have to have played a position to be able to coach it.
    Fagan never even played AFL and he does alright!

    Forwards/backs coaching can be interchangeable as you have played against the other.
    Rucks usually coach Mids and rucks, so they’re on the same page.
    Mids think they can coach anywhere, but usually can't.

    For those that don't know much about Bassett before he started coaching at AFL level.

    After a very solid AFL career as a full back/Back Pocket he took over the head coaching position at Norwood in the SANFL.

    Norwood had been on the bottom of the ladder for the previous 5-6 years and he took them to a threepeat, not to mention after each year he lost min 4 of his best players to the AFL.  (Imagine losing Viney, Langdon, Kossie and Jackson after 2021)

    Not only did he turn the Norwood football club around, he turned a bunch of guys into AFL standard footballers.  A lot of them were mature ago too not just kids with talent.

    Some of the great coaches were back pocket players who the theory goes can see the whole field. Hence their coaching insights across the ground. 

    Speedy  jeans. Parkin. Hafey.

    Assets record at Norwood is second to none.

    Suffered a terrible chest injury at the Demons very early in his career, and diagnosed with T1 diabetes at a similar time.  Headed back to SA for very good reasons.  Was an absolute stalwart for the Crows, runner up B&F in 2005 and an All Australian in 2006. Both seasons Adelaide were losing prelim finalists.  His coaching record has been previously mentioned, needless to say it was highly successful.  He'd be a great addition.

    I've been pushing this case for many years, but now that it might seemingly be about to happen I've lost the energy to care. Three years too late, but maybe he can bring Boyd with him and more importantly Burgess. Also, whoever the massive Liam McBean fan was on here can get in the bin along with the rest of the last twelve months of football. 

    I'm not going to run the numbers again, but somewhere in my posting history is a breakdown of what Port achieved both offensively and defensively in the years following Bassett's move to both ends, I think indicating that he is a very shrewd tactical operator in getting things up and running but maybe not maintaining the momentum. ?
