I am perplexed. What has Petty got to do with this thread. We did not get him from Collingwood. Yes he played well as a back man. He is not a forward that will get us a flag IMO.

He was appointed as interim CEO of Collingwood at the end of 2022 so he's already had exposure to the role.

The problem the MFC have at the moment is lack of depth on our list. Since the departure of Josh Mahoney Tim Lamb has weakened our list. Some of it beyond his control (Gus and Joel Smith) both big losses for different reasons. BUT look at Lambs record.

2022 In Grundy ( gave him away for nothing a year later) Lachie Hunter (a cultural disaster apparently) Josh Schache ( no comment needed) Out Toby Bedford (error) Jayden Hunt ( line breaker) Luke Jackson ( probably inevitable) Wiedeman.
2023 In Fullarton ( What did Goody say last year “Can’t get a kick at Casey!) McAdam and Billings ( say no more) Out James Harmes ( no world beater but had heart) Grundy (for pick 46 mind boggling).

2024 In Harry Sharp ( doubts after yesterdays game but too early to place judgement) Tom Campbell ( hopefully they play him because I watched the practice game against North and thought he was very good not what I was expecting)

Plus we have given extended contracts to our older players all of whom aren’t great kicks and are not getting any faster 

The end result is we have no depth in our list. At full strength with Pickett May McVee and Windsor in we will be competitive but lose a few and we have to play Howes Woewodin Laurie etc we are no where near the best sides.

Tim Lambs decisions deserve far more scrutiny

Add James Jordon to the outs.

Agree there have been some questionable decisions but think our depth has improved this season, just have some key absentees through injury and suspension.

It's hard to get a well rounded list with depth, look at some of the fellas running around for Carlton this year.

Melksham should have been delisted two years ago.

I think these long contracts have hamstrung our ability to lure in a key forward. Surely we could have gone after someone the past 3 years????

Viney, Petracca, Clarry, got chopped up by young quick players, out on their feet at 3qt time.

VanRooyen, Jefferson, everyone’s great white hopes, not going to happen, in a million years,  forcing Fritz into a key role, when he is so obvious a pinch hitter.

Desperate need for a full back a Full forward and a CHF, and a couple of pacy youthful on ballers, and a ruckman, starting next week.

All this planning should have taken place 3/4 years ago.

Also the decision to bone Tommo,  has gotten on my goat, particularly when you have kept a huge hatful of VFL standard battlers out at Casey, whom have hung off the back of the list for years,  who very obviously will never measure up.

I don’t blame Simon, the problem is in the back office.

The Viney contract really was completely unnecessary, he still had another year to go.

It's right up there as one of the biggest list blunders we've had in a long time.

As you say, we simply didn't need to extend at all, North bluffed us and Tim Lamb and Goodwin lost their cool and caved in.

We're now stuck with Viney clogging up a spot of any up and coming mids such as Langford cementing that midfield position. Other then being an inside midfielder, Viney has no other flexibility in his game ro play other positions like Oliver and Petracca can.

His performance yesterday was god awful especially his ball use. Drains me to think we're going to have to deal with that for the next 4 years.

Most of the good players across the league are playing well into their 30s these days so I have no issue with these contracts, and Fritsch will be 29 for the entire duration of the 2026 season. You could even argue that we would have lost both Oliver and Petracca WITHOUT these ridiculously long contracts. 

That being said, I'm not a Lamb apologist. I think our wheeling and dealing has been atrocious since 2021 for the most part.

I saw that and my heart sunk.

I think overall it is easy to state our drafting strategy, and using trade to boost our draft hand has been excellent. I still trust our under 25 squad to be a force in the future.

However, besides May/Lever/Langdon, our player trading has been diabolical. The AMB/McAdam trade has been a complete failure. 

We will need to turn over another 5-10 players, it'll take us at least 3 years and at that point we will effectively be a completely different team with no May, Gawn or Viney.
