IMO, the below are the only ones who I'm backing in as best 22.

Still not sold on Petty/Turner as key forwards and we need a ruck/forward to let JVR develop solely as a forward.

FB:     McVee           May               Lever
HB:     Salem         McDonald       Rivers
C:       Langdon      Viney            Windsor
HF:     Chandler       ????            Kozzy
FF:      Fritsch          JVR              ????
R:       Gawn           Trac            Oliver* (based on decent preseason)

Really, on paper, that team is fine with enough fire power around the pill and enough skill/talent to be be able to adapt to some quicker ball movement.

I'd rather Petty heading back as I think that's where he plays his best football which means Lever can go defend a mid size forward although it still leaves us tall down there.  Happy with McDonald this year but I still think Petty will go back and take his spot at some stage.

Still not sold on Jeffo (sorry PicketFence) but may be scarred from the one game I saw him live last season which was fairly underwhelming.  He's obviously came on a lot since then and I do hope he can prove me wrong.

I'm still bullish on a top 4/6 spot in 2025 if the veterans (May/Gawn/Viney) can remain at their current levels and we can get Oliver back to his best whilst seeing some further improvements from Windsor & McVee.  Just need a clean offseason (from now).

We really need a young one to come in and explode on the scene to give us a huge lift but I just can't see any of Tholstrup, Turner, Moniz-Wakefield, Laurie, Bowey, Howes really being much more than role players at best.

Here's hoping P5 can hit the ground running.

Brand CP5  will show little interest next year while negotiations continue in the background

Club could implode

IC: Mentha?, Verrall

SUS: Pickett

I don't agree with Picket that Jefferson will play. The club wants stability in the forwafrd line. It has to be Petty, Turner and van Rooyen. While McDonald is at CHB Petty will be CHF.

There's no way known we're taking 7 draft picks.

Just need a genuine CHF, a quality midfielder, a back pocket and some quality speed in the forward line and we'll be sweet.

I know you don't rate him, and he had a poorish season, but he should be picking himself and causing all sorts of trouble for the opposition.

I don't know how to get the best out of him at the moment, but he should be beating the oppo's 3rd or 4th defender considering Petty and JVR are probably copping defenders #1 and #2 - eg Harris Andrews and Jack Paine.

Noting the passage of time, recent performances and the gaps that were evidence this year (even acknowledging injuries), I think that side is a fair way off competing for a top 8 position.

Bolded names indicate individuals I have concerns with and suspect their form may slip even further next season.

NB:

- Petty's selection is in reference to him playing forward, I can't see him delivering any further of substance down forward.

- May has been a fantastic servant and was instrumental in our flag, as well as during 2022 and most of 2023. However, there were numerous times this season where he was beaten in contests that you'd previously bank him to win. Looks to have lost a step; will be 33 prior to the start of next season. I still see him as a valuable commodity, but can't see him returning to the form of 21/22.

He’s mostly a possible because I’d be trading him. But I’d also be playing Tracc as a permanent forward for the start of next year so the pressure is on medium forwards who don’t defend. Even more so if McAdam can get fit.

We just can’t be carrying such a one dimensional player especially if the aim is to play a more open and faster paced style.

In terms of sides for 2025, I will stick with my view that we need someone to provide drive and pace from down back - and the only player in the Jordan Clark/Nick Blakey mould on our list is Caleb Windsor.

The loss of Kozzie for the first three weeks means that we can also trial Bowey forward.

My other switch is that I'd give Kynan Brown a decent go at making the grade and start him on the left-side wing.

Other than that, I have no surprises, although Oliver has been left out at this stage because he has to show he can still lay a tackle before playing.

B: McVee May T.Mac
HB: Windsor Lever Salem
C: Langdon Rivers K.Brown
HF: Petracca Petty Chandler
F: Bowey Fritsch JVR
Ru: Gawn Sparrow Viney
Int: Turner (fwd), Tholstrup (fwd/mid), Moniz- Wakefield (def), No.5 pick (mid), Woewodin (sub)

Emerg: Howes, Laurie, Sestan

I don't think we're a snowball's chance of winning a premiership.

We simply don't have the skill level required. Our goal kicking is league average and some weeks can be really good. However our field kicking and decision making is atrocious and getting worse under Goodwin.

Our pressure isn't up to scratch unless our backs are against the wall and/or we've had a poor loss the prior week. Our pressure is generally conditional while at other club's it's generally unconditional.

Most of this year's final 8 have both of the above ingredients in spades that we have lacking.

Where's this coming from. That would be a huge blow having both Pickett and Petracca out.

Well for one he needs a pre-season for the pre-season. If he is having to sit out another month or who knows how long before getting back to full running, then he'll have limited runs on the board when pre-season starts. Instead of doing an Oliver, i think we hold him back and add another fitness block when the season starts.

End of the day i dont know what im talking about, but gut feel is he wont be ready by Round 1.

Is this from some medical insight? or just feel/sense based on where he's at currently?

No it is from the infallible source of the media (confidential of course)

Why are we picking sides now !!! No wonder we get into a lather over issues.

There is a full pre season to be had yet AND some of our marginals will have matured  plus you never know what is going to happen in the next 6 months !!!

See you all next year !!!

We have no excuses to trade for a Power Forward.

If this happens Petty back in his familiar defensive post.

Mr Fence.   I get the impression from these, and other posts on other threads, that you don't rate Mr Petty very highly as a forward.

But all these "round 1 line up" posts are really meaningless at this stage.

Naming "pick 5" in the midfield for round 1 assumes both  (a) we use pick 5 on a midfielder  AND (b) that midfielder is deemed ready to play midfield round 1.

Port are second on the ladder and hosting a home final.

Geelong are 3rd with no quality midfielders.

One of them will host a home prelim and be favourites to make the grand final.

This is an unusually even season and maybe the Hawks, Freo and the Dogs just dominate next year, but who knows? We add pick 6 and a few quality trade ins and we're a chance to improve greatly.

I'll revisit this after the trade period.

I love the followers for Casey and the interchange too. Great players.

If we did what I now suggest, yes I think we would be top 4 .

The MFC has half back flanks galore. IMV three of Salem, Bowie , Howes, AMW can do the job nicely in the company of quality big defenders .

this means both Rivers and McVee can be freed up to play on ball. Both have pace and I think the ability to be top line mids. They also dispose of the ball well. My sense is that they might make it unlikely Sparrow can hold his place. He has been disappointing since 2021. I think this would start to redress a marked weakness in 2024, lack of pace in the middle .

thoughts?

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
