He is contracted until 2027 like Kozzy, but he may have some interest if the option is there.

If his form drops off and has a "Jackson like" half of the season then there is no value playing him, i did mention this in the Luke Jackson thread back then as well, we could all see he was checked out after the bye round, i wanted him dropped. but seriously, the club need to talk to him and say he can't just send posts to opposition players or web sites saying he will be playing for freo next year, whilst he is under contract, without being disciplined.

Which is why i said last year that he has given his letter to the FC seeking a trade to Port where Narkle was at the time. 

I took all the wacks and sledges on DL on the chin for making that statement and stayed off here for a while just to cool things down.

Now that Narkle is at Freo, Kozzy has all the intentions of being at that FC in 2026 due to being Brother in laws (Partners are sisters). They are always together in Darwin and spend more time up North as a group more than back in WA/SA.

How would it even be possible for Freo to come in under the salary cap and get both Kozzie and Warner? Both the Swans and the Dees would be remiss if they didn’t ask for two 2025 draft first rounders (and possibly a future 3rd rounder?), but even if Freo could somehow manage that, that doesn’t solve their salary cap conundrum, so, they would more than likely have to trade a top echelon player to one of the clubs; not only do they have a clutch of players on top dollar, they will have players like Amis (sp?) who will be demanding increases (can they afford to lose him, for example).

Yes, Kozzie will depart, so it may as well be at the end of this season as at any other time, but we MUST demand a top deal either in multiple picks or a player swap that also includes a pick (current or future, I don’t care) from them.

However it pans out though, both clubs must be absolutely ropable that this has been leaked. Who needs this kind of [censored] before the season has even kicked off… this can have such a big impact on team morale.

For sure. But that doesnt stop the fact Freo drafting him for free IF indeed a way of luring Kozi is a very savvy bit of recruiting.  Plenty of list cloggers and he is far from the worst.   

Based on last year they currently hold pick 9.  Pre-emptive death ride. Saddle up.

Makes me sick that if Fremantle end up with Kozzie, they would have had

• Hayden Young
• Luke Jackson
• Kozzie Pickett 

All from the same draft year, in the same team. 2 of which were so influential for us, that it's hard to stomach.

They picked up Serong with the pick we traded to North for Pickett too.

Not sure what Freo give up to get a deal done. We aren't just going to let him walk for a late first.

Maybe they aren’t offering a lot of coin? Just the lure of coming home. 

 

The whole industry needs to grow up with the trading and contracts stuff, including fans. 
I love Kozzy and prefer him to stay but the reality is he is contracted and should not be permitted to leave/be traded to his club of choice unless it's a win/win & the onus should be on the player and the destination club to make play. 

The whole trade system in the AFL is childish and laughable. Full of loopholes, contrived and consistently tampered with by clubs, players, player managers and media. 

Another thing the AFL could choose to tidy up but they choose not too (or are incapable of). 

Options a contracted player should have 

1. Remain with current club to honour the contract
2. Advise their club they wish to be traded to club x. Work with club x and current club to facilitate a win/win in the knowledge that if it doesn't work out they remain where they are 
3. If they are hell bent on leaving, they can invite their current club to shop them seeking the best offer in the knowledge that they could end up anywhere or remaining where they are. 

End of story...

Agreed. I think there should be a rule in place. If you elect to go-home to your origin state (outside of free agency of course), you can't nominate a 'club of choice'.

It should be up to the club to decide whom you play for based on the best compensation and the highest paid contract. Open market. What club is willing to pay the most and give up the most. 

If Kozzie does want to be released from his contract 2 years early then its up to his manager to work with Fremantle and possibly other player managers and clubs  to have a deal ready that meets Melbourne's valuation.

I would be absolutely putting in the work with those Freo player agents over the next 6-24 months DA J.

We'd be sleeping at the wheel if we didn't.

He is a PROFESSIONAL footballer that signed a contract extension last year taking him through till 2027. This homesickness thing is rubbish. Hold him to his contract, and if IF the club rolls over as they could well do. Then we want Brayshaw and Serong AND your first round pick in 2026 AND 2027. Dont want to play ball freo?? then stuff you and repeat... Hold him to his contract PERIOD!

That was the first thought that entered my mind, followed by Carlton with the Judd saga.

It aint that difficult. A good personnel/HR operative  would talk with Kozzie establish the context and circumstances of the situation. Explain how he is valued and why he is contracted. The talks would require sensitivity and comparison. It may need further consideration with family and managers and may take some time. While these talks are ongoing the club should ensure Kozzie is given the complete support of coaches players and supporters to maintain and improve his playing performances.
