DEMON ‘SET TO LEAVE’ AS POSSIBLE DESTINATION PRESENTS

Melbourne key defender Adam Tomlinson is expected to call it quits with the Demons this year amid a lack of chances at senior level, according to SEN reporter Sam Edmund.

Tomlinson, who played a key role in the club’s 2021 dominance before missing out on its premiership due to injury, holds unrestricted free agent rights this off-season.

The 31-year-old has played a combined 32 AFL games in the past four seasons, and he hasn’t played more than 13 senior games in a season since 2019.

Edmund floated a rival Victorian club as a possible landing spot this October.

“(He is) set to leave Melbourne as an unrestricted free agent,” Edmund told SEN. “(He) wants more opportunity ... Is St Kilda the home as his third club?”

With in-demand defender Josh Battle widely anticipated to depart Moorabbin for Hawthorn this off-season, adding Tomlinson as further depth behind All-Australian Cal Wilkie and Dougal Howard could be wise.

No surprise. He's been pure depth for us, and even when he performed well, he was straight out of the team.

Unless, Petty or Turner move back to defence, it leaves us short on kpd depth. Adams is still an unknown quantity.

Good luck Adam. Always look upon you as a bone fide Demon. All the best.

Always been a big Tomlinson fan and was shocked he wasn't picked up by another club sooner.
Wish him all the best!

New contract at 31? Grab it Tommo!

Good luck

I wasnt against him sticking around another year as depth but happy he can get a contract and a starting gig at another club. Been unlucky here at times, all the best fella

Hopefully the club will offer him another 12 month contract that will make it worthwhile.

I think he's after playing more footy. Not happening with us.

He is lucky that Battle is leaving

Just too slow

Wonder if St Kilda do a late pick trade with us so that they don't impact any compensation for Battle.

I doubt it- Tomo is 31 and his new contract will probably not attract any compensation for us at all.

It might not mean compensation to us but it may dilute St Kilda's compensation for Battle. The system is deliberately vague.

The club hasn’t yet offered him a contract, nor have they delisted him.  I wonder if that is because they’re waiting to see if they can land a key forward (which would send Petty back and result in Tommo being surplus to requirements) or if they’re anticipating a trade with StK, helping them avoid diluting Battle compo

great point

they may want to trade as a result

Just now, whatwhat say what said:

It would just be a shuffling of later picks.

Surely this means T Mac will be offered another year if Tomo leaves.

Tomlinson was very handy as a back up defender and served the club well.

Nothing against Tommo should he looks for more opportunities elsewhere. He played some great footy in the opening couple of months of our premiership year before he went down with his ACL.

Random fact. Even though he only played 40 odd games in 5 years with us, Tommo was a starter in every one of our season opening matches since he joined at the end of 2019.

Always liked Tomo. If not for the ACL he might have been a Premiership Player. He has been stiff in that we have some solid key backs and always performed admirably when filling in and unfairly dropped even after solid games. Cannot begrudge the guy for seeking opportunities elsewhere and I wish him the best of luck.

Thanks for your contributions Adam and good luck wherever your footy career takes you.

His ACL derailed his career. Lost his pace and manoeuvrability.

Correct. I believe at the time he got injured he was the leading one on one contested mark in the comp.

Desperately unlucky not to be a premiership player.

Good luck Tommo

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #3 Christian Salem

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #4 Judd McVee

Following an injury-interrupted start to the season, McVee struggled to maintain the standard he established in 2025 as he pursued an expanded role within the team structure. He remained a firm fan favourite and the club had hoped to negotiate a new contract with the former rookie selection from Western Australia, whose partner, Lily Johnson, plays for Melbourne's AFLW side. Those hopes were dashed when he expressed his desire to return to his home state and play for Fremantle. Like all players who have worn the red and blue and are leaving this year, we wish him well in the future.
