The first was given on Thursday but wasn’t aired until last night. He was strong about loving the club and said “I love the Melbourne footy club…no plans to not be a one club player”.

The second was the post-match with Lynch where he says “nah” straight away and then the “we’ll see how the year plays out”.

Morris argued this shows a change in Viney’s thoughts. I disagree. I think it strengthens the argument that the “nah” was his true answer and the rest is contract negotiation talk. Two days earlier, which was well after the North target story broke, he sat down and said he has no plan to leave. 

I might be wrong but I’m not at all concerned.

Agree 100%. Jack isn't the best public speaker, you can see the wheels turning as he works his way through answering questions. I don't think he'd have known he was answering the question in a way that made it seem he was considering leaving.

On the Sunday footy show, they showed the interview post game with Jack, of which the reaction of the whole panel was essentially "oh wow... he's gone!" which is how most would read into it given that this is usually the answer of a player weighing up their options. I was shocked too but after watching it again and seeing the other interview I think it was Jack just talking about contract talks and not fully realising his words.

In 2020 Jack had the choice to go to an actual good club in Geelong, after we just finished bottom 4, and then went on to miss finals again. He chose to stay.

Why then, would he walk out of his legacy club to go to North Melbourne? Make it make sense

The only true statement that can be made. It’s a race to the bottom in regard to professional standards, but, there again, the footy media should not be referred to collectively as a profession or journalists. They are reporters or commentators that get paid to create news and have opinions.  Professional standards are not part of the equation. We lower ourselves by even commentating on their stories. 

Remember in 2012 how we were all scared of Jack going to another club because he refused to commit to Melbourne? He made a statement like "If Melbourne don't want me i'm happy to play elsewhere".

Then it eventually came out to be completely a bluff so teams wouldn't bid on him before our first pick.

If Jack was smart enough to play games as a 18yo he'll be smart enough to do it again now.

Got the sense from his post-game was that he has been told by his manager to straight bat questions about his contract. So not overly concerned with his answer.

I expect North are offering him something like 3-4 years as a carrot. If its 4 years on money we can't match you almost have to let him go and thank him for everything. If he goes we can probably upgrade our first and get another second back, so not the end of the world.

Reckon he probably signs a two year extension with us though.

Tom Morris might be a half reasonable journo but he's no Allan Pease.

I think Viney wants a new contract but loves the club and staying is the no.1 preference. Providing we don't completely insult him on our offer, he'll be a one club player.

The last 2 flags have been won with the best midfielders being Selwood and Danger (and Isaac Smith) and Pendles and Sidebottom (post Treloar and Grundy trade outs).

I’m fine with 1 going, maybe even 2 if we can bring someone of quality in.

Losing all 3 would be condemning us to a bottom 6 finish and from there the only way to rebuild as a non destination club is to go harder and deeper towards the draft. And then it’s every chance you have to rebuild everything - culture, coaching, off field staff.

We have to weigh a complicated series of decisions including leadership, skillset, position, health, durability, trade value. But all 3 plus Nibbler after losing Gus and JJ has to be a hard no.

He played like an A grader on the weekend but any more than one more year would be a mistake.

Yes or he could continue to get better as he's shown the last few seasons.

If Travis Boak can still be effective at 36 I don't see why Viney can't compete at this level until he's 34. As you've likely heard in the media of late, players used to be nervous when they reached 30 but these days that's less and less the case with advanced sports science and elite fitness programs players, are playing and performing well into mid thirties far more often.

Health wise I would have been concerned about him pre 2022 but over the past three seasons he's played 68 games. I know the shoulder is an issue but the fact he can still compete at a high level while carrying that injury this season is a credit to him. Hopefully he can fix that up over the off season.

Worst case scenario with these sorts of signings is if Jack did find in a few years time that he's on the outer for midfield time in the seniors with other younger players taking his place then the club would do what Hawthorn did with Lews and Hodge. Give him that opportunity to play senior footy at another club. THEN you might see a scenario where he plays for a developing side like North.

Viney is really only able to play as a centre square midfielder and will still be a valuable player as long as he can hold his pace. Hopefully it is 5 years but I doubt it.

Boak has lost some pace but he is more damaging on the outside than Viney. (Boak is a much better kick.)

he can also move forward and impact as a physical half-forward as well

travis boak's career arc is similar - his last six years have arguably been better than the six before it, and that's because he's never lost his running fitness

neither viney nor boak are 'quick' but - like pendlebury - they are 'smart' players in terms of positioning themselves to be able to impact play in a variety of different ways

Boak and Pendlebury are much better ball users.

I hope you are right and he is evergreen like Boak and Pendlebury, but Brad Sewell and Rory Sloane are more likely examples IMO.

I love Jack but he has ordinary disposal. Daniel Hoyne from Champion Data had him rated as one of the worst kicks inside 50.
